All Hands & Hearts fights COVID-19

I worked with AHAH on a DM 12 in Los Angeles County supporting covid-19 vaccination and testing sites. The AHAH team was wondering and took our safety and time seriously, while providing a supportive network! I highly recommend this program to those who haven't participated in service programs before as a way to stick a toe in the water and see if long term service projects are for you. All Hands and Hearts programs truly give you the opportunity to make a difference and be embraced by a community!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Seeing the vaccination sites and Los Angeles really come back to life from the pandemic was amazing!

Great Experience

All Hands and Hearts is a great experience for any age. You are working side by side with every age group. If you have experience with tools, great you can teach others. If you have no experience great they will teach you. You meet people from all over the world. You can make lasting friendships. The living conditions are pretty good, showers, electricity, even WiFi. Safety is their number one concern. The community is so thankful for the help we are giving them. Come volunteer it can change your life.

What was your funniest moment?
Last night we had a dance off between bubbles, many with no rhythm!

Building A School in the Bahamas 🌴

When I signed up with "All Hands and Hearts" to go to the Bahamas for 2 months, I knew we'd be building a school for young kiddos who haven't had access to education in over a year.
What I quickly realized, however, is that we would first be building our own little city inside our new jungle home.
During our week of quarantine on base, I watched my new teammates (many of whom had never touched a power tool) spending their days building benches, shade structures, and fun shelves for our little pods!
We have now moved over to the school and are hard at work digging trenches, bending rebar, and laying the foundation.
It's hard work, but it is the beginning of a new story for the young children who have been without a place to go for over a year.
I'm happy to be a part of that story ❤

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come ready to work hard and play hard!
It will be hot... it will be exhausting... it will be frustrating at times... Keep an open mind and be ready to adapt.
Know this.... you will feel the difference you are making everyday!

A challenging yet positive experience

I had a really positive experience on my DM12 Bahamas program. This was my first experience with All Hands and doing a humanitarian aid project. All Hands has created such a welcoming, positive environment and I feel like I am doing productive and meaningful work every day that results in tangible positive good. My two favorite aspects were learning how to use power tools and about Bahamian culture! One of the most challenging aspects personally was living in a communal environment. However, with every challenge, All Hands was very supportive and understanding.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make sure you come mentally prepared to live and work in a post disaster area.

Challenging but well worth it!!!

With the impacts of COVID-19 everywhere, AHAH has strived to provide a unique experience among the chaos.

Approaching the halfway point through my 2 month program and again back in quarantine, the work completed in the past couple of weeks has been both rewarding and informative. From mixing concrete to learning new tools, AHAH has provided a first timer a disaster relief experience that definitely wants me to do more.

I'd be lying if I said the living conditions didn't take some adaptation. Learning to sleep around others and take cold showers is not for the faint of heart. However, the food and the people you meet are nothing short of amazing. The stories they have to tell only further your interest in what you're doing.

All in all, I'd recommend everyone interested in the disaster relief field to try it at least once.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Pictures don't do it justice when trying to understand the aftermath of a hurricane on a rural community.

Dundas Town Bahamas Program

This experience was overall okay. I feel that in the beginning this program was unorganized but has shown some improvement. When I was home and got the call about he conditions me along with others were told we would have certain things and where we arrived we did not have those. Hi I feel that some issues could have been taken care of better. I also thing that the cooks are amazing wonderful people. I think it is awesome to have interaction with some of the local people. I believe we all will grow and learn how this base operates. We also will make improvements together as we get to know what other people needs are.

A life changing experience!!

This has been my first project and from originally signing up for 4 weeks i quickly changed that to stay for the full project.
Its hard to describe in words how amazing this program has been, not only the amazing work that is being completed but also the the whole experience in general. From the local community to the other volunteers on the program and of course the staff have all contributed to this being a truly amazing and life changing experience.
If you are able to attend a program i would highly recommend this project.

AHAH changes many lives - including mine

All Hands and Hearts is an amazing organization that puts incredible effort to impact people in need after a natural disaster. The work is hard but the reward is bigger. Seeing the families, schoolchildren and locals being so happy about the work we are doing is the best I have ever experienced.

The work will include digging, working with power tools and wood, tying rebar and many other things. Everything will be taught to you so you don't have to worry about not knowing anything about construction work.

People you meet on this program are the most welcoming and kind people in the world. It feels like we are a huge family.

I would recommend everyone to join this program because it enables everyone (with and without experience) to contribute to an amazing cause.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open to anything, Including communal living - you will be surrounded by many (amazing) people, but it can also be very exhausting (but also a lot of fun :) )

Life changing experience!

This program was amazing. The impact AHAH is making is visible in the community. The School builds are amazing. Being able to offer English Lessons as well as playing basketball and soccer in the community. The overall impact AHAH made in Mozambique is incredible. You were able to work hand and hand with local masons exchanging skill sets and learning to build together as a team. The food was incredible and there were several night we spent playing trivia, having a mock tail night or movie night.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We had a severe storm, Base was flooding at 1 CM per minute. The staff ended up evacuating base and everyone left safely and calmly. Come to find out the storm effected over 30,000 people, destroyed 16 schools, 4 medical centers and was the second biggest rain fall since Cyclone Idai had hit a year previously.
