best program

I went on this trip last year for two weeks and it was one of the best trips I have ever had. Between the staff, teachers, and the other students there I felt completely supported and I had so much fun. I totally want to go back in college!! Being in the OR for four hours everyday is definitely something that not many high schoolers get to experience, and being in both the surgery and the maternity ward was so interesting. Other than being in the hospital, the staff always had something for us to do. Whether that was ATVing, going to the beach, or going into town was up to us!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I got to hold a gallbladder! I also witnessed a massive benign tumor removal that quite literally flew across the room!

The best choice for medical field students

I strongly recommend Global Pre-Meds for all who are interested in foreign country's health system, who has a willing to improve their knowledge and adapt it later in their studies or job. The things you learn and see at hospital as well as the friends/doctors/organisers you meet there - all of these stay for life. There is nothing to worry about before - Global Pre-Meds team is so friendly, helpful and communicable. So, if you just have a chance to go on this internship - just make it happen. Modesta Ralyte

The most amazing 2 weeks!

The 2 weeks I spent in the Dominican with global pre meds last year was the best 2 weeks of my life. All the staff at the house were lovely, always on hand if you needed anything and the food every night was super tasty! The medical experiences I had we’re incredible, being able to witness births, amputations, general surgery and so much more alongside knowledgable mentors taught me so much. My mentors were absolutely amazing and always willing to answer questions and push you to get the most out of your time there. I loved the additional learning opportunities such as the public health talks and Spanish lessons back at the house. Right from the first day I met so many amazing people from around the world that I’m still in regular contact with now! The evening and weekend activites, quad biking, the boat party (so so good), horse riding, roller skating, Santo Domingo city tour were fab. For the medical shadowing, experience of a beautiful country and just the new people you’ll meet, I honestly could not recommend global pre-meds any more!!! - Maia Cole

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Walking into Heathrow airport by myself about to travel to a country I’d never been to not knowing anyone I’d be living with! I quickly felt alright when I found the other girls wearing the global premeds T-shirt’s and we all got along instantly

My experience with Global Pre-Meds

My name is Lizeth Magana I am a nursing student and I completed the induction program on August 2019 in the Dominican Republic. Being a part of Global Pre-Meds has been one of the greatest adventures, I enjoyed every second of my experience. I loved making new friends from all of over the world and being able to share the amazing experience with them and make unforgettable memories. I completed my shadowing hours in the emergency room of the Hospital Dr. Dario Contreras, the biggest trauma hospital in the Dominican Republic, where I was mentored by Dr. Yannety De Aza. I learned so much from my mentor and was able to witness critical situations that I would have never seen anywhere else. I would definitely recommend Global Pre-Meds to anyone that is interested in the healthcare field.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve recking moment was arriving to a country where I didn't know anyone and I honestly didn't know what to expect. I was able to overcome it when I was greeted at the airport by AK, one of the Global Pre-Med employees, who was so friendly and welcoming.

One of the most amazing experiences out there for wanna-be med students!

Last summer I spent one week shadowing doctors in a hospital in the Dominican Republic. I can honestly say it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life; I was able to watch caesareans, leg amputations, hernia repairs and other general surgeries. I also got taught how to take blood, blood pressure and how to suture. If you want to study medicine I can think of no better way to learn whether you are up for the challenge of being a doctor! Besides the medical aspects, the accommodation and food were really nice and I thoroughly recommend the experience.

Best experience of my life!

My global pre meds experience was July 2019 and it was the best weeks of my life. The process of researching global pre meds and booking my two weeks was so easy and they provided me with all the information I needed and all questions were answered. They also supplied me with extra information on how to book flights and get the best insurance for travelling. On the run up to my flight date I was contacted regularly to ensure any last minute questions or nerves were reduced and answered. Throughout my two weeks I got to experience things I never thought I would at the age of 17 such as C-sections, hernia removals, Xrays and everything in between including a natural birth on my last day! As well as shadowing my mentors I also got to explore the Dominican island on horses, boats and quad bikes. The staff in the Dominican house were so supportive and did whatever they could to accommodate you. For anybody considering going into anything medical related I would extremely recommend it. I went wanting to go into midwifery and came back loving paediatric nursing! My 2 weeks absolutely flew by and I’d do it all again in a heartbeat!

Best week of my life!

Last summer, I had the incredible privilege of shadowing doctors, surgeons, and midwives in the Dominican Republic as a part of a medical placement. Through the experience, I learned the value of and gained a profound appreciation for medical professionals, specifically those confined by scarce resources and compromised healthcare systems. The internship allowed me to truly discover my passion for medicine and my desire to have a career centered around patient care and healthcare. I am extremely blessed to be studying Nursing and Pre-Medicine in my post-secondary endeavors. The whole experience helped me discover my true calling and I owe it all to Global Pre-Meds.

Life Changing

My experience in the Dominican was up to that point the best two weeks of my life. The people I met and the experiences I had are still a huge part of my life and it always seems to come up in every conversation I have with new people I meet. The things you get to see and do on this trip are seriously once in a lifetime things that even people in college and beyond might never get to see for themselves. The trip solidified my passion for wanting to pursue medicine and if you ever get that chance to do this trip, 100% recommend.

What would you improve about this program?
Honestly nothing at all. Everything from the people, to the hospital, to the support staff both before, during, and after the trip, everything was perfect and I wouldn't change a thing.

One in a life time educational experience

Global Pre-Meds is an amazing opportunity that anyone considering going into the healthcare field should experience. The program did an amazing job pairing students with mentors in specific fields. I was a paramedic student and was paired with a doctor in the emergency department. Between the program and my mentor, I fell in love with emergency medicine. One day I hope to be as amazing as my mentor and become a doctor in the ED. Global Pre-Meds provided the students with opportunities outside of the educational aspect to explore and experience what the Dominican Republic had to offer. The staff onsite with the students were so friendly and willing to join us in all our adventures. They helped plan and arrange our adventures, transportation, and gave us advice on other important traveling factors. To this day, I am still in touch with many of the students from my cohort. If I had the opportunity to experience this program again, I 100% would.

What would you improve about this program?
I would not improve or change anything about this program.

Two weeks in Dominican Republic

Last year I travelled to Dominican Republic for two weeks to gain experience in a hospital to help me confirm my want to be a midwife. While there I gained so much knowledge in the medical aspect but also came away with amazing friends and memories. After placement we were able to go on trips, my favourite was the sunset cruise which also allowed us to go snorkelling. I 100% recommend this programme as it is worth the money and you won’t regret it! I felt very safe while in Dominican which is important for travelling alone.

What would you improve about this program?
Make sure everyone has contact with the people they are travelling with before they fly out. Most of us had contact but there was two girls who we found at the airport. Can be scary travelling alone so is nice to know people.
