UoA not a party school but a city school

After being in New Zealand for a couple of months I wish I had gone to a school in the south island because I hear that you get a more immersive experience of the New Zealand culture. In addition there is a bigger party environment down there. That being said I still believe the education I am getting is unmatched, the City always offers stuff to do (albeit expensive), and it is easy to travel being so close to Auckland International Airport.

What would you improve about this program?
Having cheaper social options and perhaps connecting you to a family, similar to the host family experience except you wouldn't be living with them. It would be comforting to have another family.

My time at UoA

This is my first year and first semester as a University student, and originally being from the US, it has been challenging adjusting to the difference. That being said, I feel that it has been an overall wonderful and growing time in my life. This semester has shown me how to not only be a better student, but a better person as well. The welcome and assistance from the staff and students could not have been more helpful and appreciated. I can not thank the University enough for this opportunity.

Great place to study abroad!

Great housing condition, awesome support from my program staff & the study abroad office at Uni, and easy access to university from housing. Only downside is large class sizes & generally unresponsive professors but able to get through it. My program itself was awesome! Weekly newsletters highlighting things to do around Auckland were very helpful and I always felt like I could reach out to anyone in program staff for support.

NZ Study Abroad, BU Program Review

Overall, this program is excellent. Brett, Kevin, and Vivienne have done A fabulous job creating a program that is both enriching and engaging. It’s hard being this far away from home, but you forget that when you get to make your own whānau and embrace your inner Kiwi. I can tell that this program has impacted me personal, both directly and indirectly. It’s taught me to be more self-sufficient, helped me grow as an (internaltional) student, and improved my social/professional skills. Thanks to this program, I feel more equipped than ever to return home and succeed within my industry.

What would you improve about this program?
There is a considerable amount of work, especially for students taking internships. It’s difficult to immerse yourself in the culture, education, and work force of New Zealand when you’re primary concern is making the word count of your second research paper or making the third deadline in the final week of the BU course.

The best decision of my life

I've been in Auckland for just over two months and I have loved every single second of it. The University of Auckland have courses I can't take in Denmark and they even let me take a post grad course (I'm still an undergrad).
I joined SASS which is a really good way to meet other international students as well as kiwis and I've just spend the mid semester break going skiing with guys from the club! Both the social aspect and the academics are better than I could ever have imagined!

Comments

It was hard to find courses that fit my energy & environmental engineering degree. There were many clubs to choose from and many social events/trips for study abroad students. New Zealand is a fantastic country for traveling and I should have had more time to see everything I want to see. I have got to know people from all over the world, which is very cool. I found an apartment myself and it is both central, cheap, big and modern.

review

Overall, I have enjoyed my time at the University of Auckland. The professors seem to care about the students and they are able to expalin complex concepts effectively. The classes are challenging, but not to the point where you start to stress out right away. Also having lectures recorded is a plus. I don't think that tutorials are necessary, but they are nice in case you need to ask questions about the material.

What would you improve about this program?
Have a field trip for study abroad students to meet and go out with each other.

Study Abroad Freshmen Year

I am still participating in my exchange program, but I am enjoying it. As a first year, first semester student, I really feel that I am being challenged and am becoming a better student through this experience. I feel that I am becoming a more independent and critically thinking person. Studying abroad makes one become creative and resourceful in problem solving. I have been able to get to know many locals in Auckland which has enhanced my experience here.

Spring 2018

I had a lot of fun traveling all over to places I normally wouldn’t be able to get to. I met so many interesting people that had unique stories to tell. Each and every person I met made my experience that much better. The classes and school culture are definitely something that you may need to adjust to, but the teachers and staff are there to support you. I got to see the South Island; it was amazing. The entire country is so beautiful and very accessible. There is something here for everyone. The mountains and water and all other sorts of outdoor activities are relatively close to each other, allowing time to do everything!

Advice to Future Participants

Its going to be a lot different than you expect it to be. You might go through moments of homesickness or even culture shock(depending on where you come from), but it would not last for too long. The key is to be open to the new culture, people and experiences. Also remember you're studying abroad(emphasis on the studying), so choose your classes wisely and plan your time as well. I would not advise taking any upper level classes, except you absolutely need to, the difference in educational systems can totally throw you off your game.
Overall, it is an amazing experience.
