6 month Course at the MFGC

I grew up in the bush and always knew that I wanted to learn more about it while playing a part in the conservation of the beautiful nature and wildlife that we are so fortunate to have in South Africa. After matriculating in 2023 and still being unsure about what to study, I decide to follow my dreams and embark on the journey of becoming a field guide. This one the best decision that I have ever made and choosing The MORE to facilitate this journey was definitely the correct choice. The instructors were excellent and the amount of knowledge that they gave us still baffles me. The camp management was also top notch and every little detail was thought of. I cannot recommend this experience more to anyone, it has changed my life and I have made lifelong friends and memories.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was extremely nervous before coming in the course but the people and instructors made me feel at home from the very first evening when we had a braai. I also used to be terrified of spider and this course has helped me overcome this fear.
Pros
  • Extremely knowledgeable instructors
  • Great facilities
  • Best time of my life

Studying at More Field Guide College

Coming from the UK I was unsure what spending 6 months in the South African bush would look like. What I found was an astonishing space entwined with nature which felt like home in no time.
To be able to live in the bush, surrounded by nature with course mates who quickly become close friends made for an extremely fun and productive atmosphere. Each day brought unique and exciting opportunities, of which the knowledge and experience you are able to gain will be of use throughout your life, no matter the career you end up pursuing.
It was a privilege to be able to live and study in such a special environment and I would highly recommend the course to anyone who has a passion for the natural world.

Pros
  • Knowledgeable facilitators
  • Incredible scenery
  • Abundant wildlife

The More Field Guide College experience

Becoming a field guide has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. The programme has given me the opportunity to pursue that dream and make it a reality. It is a holistic learning experience covering content in the classroom as well as out in the field. The course ensures you are more than adequately prepared to venture out into the industry with the knowledge and qualifications required of an individual to start their career on a good note! Would highly recommended for those with the same dream - whether you want to work in the industry or not.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was sat on the tracker seat when a pride of lions made their way past. They walked past about a meter in front of me. Having never been so close to the king of the jungle, the fear crept in. Sat quietly and just admired these animals and turned out to be my favourite memory of the course
Pros
  • Time in the bush
  • Knowledge gained
  • Friends made

My time at More Field Guide College

Graduating from MFGC in 2017 marked a transformative chapter in my life, one characterized by profound personal and professional growth. The educational journey at MFGC equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of our environment, providing me with invaluable tools and knowledge. The dedicated guidance and expertise of our esteemed facilitators were instrumental in shaping my learning experience, fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and excellence.

One aspect I particularly cherished was the intimate learning environment fostered by smaller class sizes, allowing for personalized attention and tailored support. This not only enhanced my academic pursuits but also facilitated meaningful connections with peers and mentors alike.

Since graduating, I have had the privilege of continuing my journey with the esteemed MORE group for the past 7 years. This ongoing partnership has been instrumental in furthering my career trajectory, culminating in the prestigious recognition as Safari Guide of the Year 2023. Such achievements stand as a testament to the unwavering support and mentorship provided by the MORE group, without which my accomplishments would not have been possible.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The first time I ever saw an elephant on foot from only 50m away was one of the most exhilarating experience for me. Trusting the experience of our Trainers and learning from them, knowing that one day. This would be me!
