CIWY - Care for Rescued Wildlife in the Bolivian Amazon Jungle
- Bolivia
About Program
Volunteer with rescued wildlife in Bolivia at one of Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi (CIWY)'s three Wildlife Custody Centres.
CIWY founded and manages three Wildlife Custody Centres, where injured, abused or mistreated animals are cared for either temporarily or permanently. We accept volunteers from across the globe to help care for these animals, involving them in day to day activities such as feeding, cleaning, providing enrichment and exercise.
In the past 30 years, more than 7,000 volunteers have offered their help and support – staying from two weeks, to two years or more! We are also very proud to have primatologist Dr Jane Goodall as our Patron.
Volunteers are normally assigned responsibility for the care of a specific area of animals or an animal in particular. We work with big cats, small cats, monkeys, birds and anything else which needs our help.
The volunteer work day is long, often tiring and dirty, but the animals make it all worthwhile!

Program Highlights
- We accept volunteers from all walks of life and we do not require previous experience working with wildlife. All training takes place at the sanctuary.
- You'll find a melting pot of many cultures and nationalities, all united with the mission of saving Bolivian rescued wildlife.
- We manage two wildlife sanctuaries: Ambue Ari in Santa Cruz, specializing in felines, and Jacj Cuisi near Rurrenabaque, specializing in primates. Choose the one that best fits your interests, career goals, or travel plans.
- 7 nights to work in construction, 15 nights to work with monkeys, birds and small mammals, and 30 nights to work with felines. The minimum stays are part of a policy implemented for the wellbeing and emotional stability of our animals.
Program Impact
At our Sanctuaries, we care for a wide variety of animals, distributed in different management areas and enclosures. When you arrive at the sanctuary, you will be assigned your work areas or individual animals. Volunteer preferences are taken into consideration, as well as the needs of the sanctuary and the animals. For this reason, we cannot guarantee work in a particular area.
All volunteers working with animals should assist in cleaning, preparing food, and providing enrichment, especially for animals that cannot leave their enclosures. In addition, you will be in charge of specific tasks in the area, as explained below. Please note the minimum stay for each area. It is determined according to the needs of the animals, for their well-being and stability.
