About Program

Located alongside Central America, Costa Rica is hidden between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and is the home for over 500,000 different species of wildlife, meaning it has highest species density of any country worldwide.

Sadly, the region is gravely challenged by habitat fragmentation and destruction, alongside increasing pollution, poaching and climate change. For several years, Frontier has been implementing groundbreaking survey work and critical data collection in an effort to combat the effects of these challenges and to conserve this area.

Frontier's camp is based amongst dense tropical forest on the edge of Corcovado National Park. Volunteers collaborate to carry out imperative surveys and data collection activities. Joining this vital project will not only give you an opportunity to experience a world of fragile beauty but also contribute to the conservation of Costa Rica's precious and unique habitats for the future.

Costa Rica is one of the coolest places I have ever been to. I was nervous about going until I met and made friends with the volunteers and staff, because it is the people who you are there with that make the trip. I really enjoyed the work that we did and the site in which we stayed especially, as sleeping in a hammock is a lot more fun then you would expect. I would have loved to have had stayed longer for sure, and was sad to have left but it was an experience that I shall never forget. I hope to go back or to do another project with Frontier and to keep in touch with all the friends that I made.

The last four weeks spent as a Frontier volunteer on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica have been amazing! As someone who has no scientific background but just pure interest in the wild inhabitants, I have been totally blown away by the experience.

The surveys have been enriching and rewarding with some epic hikes around the forest. The views of the clear skies during the turtle night walks and the sunrises have been immense. Even the constant howling of the howlers and the annoying sound of the missile cercadas have been a breath of fresh air from the hussle and bustle of modern day life.

The most rewarding point for me during the four weeks has come within the last. One day we hear a noise- otters we hoped. Then on the next day we had a very long search around the river for possible homes to no avail. However, a few days later at 6:46am, we spotted the otter. It was casual, free and chilled in the morning light. This moment sticks out as the epitamy of the whole project itself - awesome!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this project at all - I went over the Summer for 8 weeks (I also spent an extra 4 weeks travelling around Costa Rica after) and had an intense but fun time. Living on the Osa is one of those experiences that you can't really put in to words - I have never been to anywhere like it and the range of animals I saw was extreme - monkeys galore, scarlet macaws, snakes, caymens and much, much more.

The camp is headed up by Dan, who is a really friendly guy and although they expect you to do your fair share of work, it's quite a laid back vibe and everyone was very friendly and accommodating.

One thing - bring something to jazz up meal times - most people were quite happy with the food but after a while I craved some variety. Also, bring lots of mozzie repellant, they can be vicious!

Why did you decide to volunteer with Frontier in Costa Rica?

Charles: I decided to volunteer abroad with frontier because I wanted to take part in a wildlife conservation project. Frontier offer a wide range of projects in many different locations, I was spoilt for choice. I finally chose Costa Rica because the conservation work wasn't specific to one animal but several. Also Frontier had many pictures of the project on the website and videos on their Youtube channel which helped me finalise my decision after seeing how beautiful the country was. Every morning I would wake up to the gentle distant sound of Howler monkeys.

Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Charles: Every morning I would wake up to the gentle distant sound of Howler monkeys. The day would start around 8 am after making granola for breakfast the group split up and set off to do different surveys around the rainforest which bordered the camp. Each trek into the forest was different seeing some plant or animal new each time. In the evenings after dinner we were able to go on night turtle walks on Peje beach walking 18km in one night. Despite it being physically exhausting it was extremely rewarding when I finally got to see an adult Olive Ridley Sea Turtle and I even got to help measure it!

Whenever I got some free time It would be spent washing my clothes or trying to catch a tan. My best memory from camp is when I was hanging out my washing to dry when out of the forest came a troop of capuchin monkeys and they all just swung through the trees only a couple of metres in front of me. On Sunday when there was no surveys I would walk down to the peaceful lagoon on the beach with a couple of volunteers an just relax for a few hours staring out at the Pacific.

What made this experience unique and special?

Charles: What made this trip unique and special was the fact I had never traveled anywhere alone before, so it was a big step for me. However it wasn't bad at all as the people I was travelling with were in the same boat and it made bonding with each other soo much easier. The most special thing about this trip is definitely the friends that I made there, we still keep in touch, have met up a few times, and I am even travelling to Madagascar with one friend I made there.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Charles: This experience has impacted my life massively. Personally, it has made me more confident about doing things by myself and meeting new people, and it prepared me for starting uni in September. It has also made my decision to pursue Wildlife conservation as a career and made me more inclined to start marine conservation, and it certainly has made me want to move and live over in Costa Rica!

What is your favorite travel memory?

Eating in a restaurant in Hong Kong with some colleagues. The food was great, the atmosphere, we'd only just arrived and the whole setting was just perfectly set up for a great few hours in an amazing city.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Certainly grown in self confidence in my abilities to do my job well. I've been given the opportunities to test myself and to improve and my confidence has grown right along with that.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Not one specifically, but some volunteers I've worked with have expressed interest in working with me and the organization again in the future. It speaks volumes about the time they spent here and the impact it had on them.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

One of the ethical trails for sure. The idea of seeing different countries and cultures and going from one to the next and seeing what might happen is a really exciting idea.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

The uniqueness comes from my colleague's ceaseless energy and enthusiasm for the work, regardless of the challenges or difficulties. Everyone is so positive, enthusiastic and hard working that it rubs off on everyone else creating an amazing atmosphere to work in.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Paying attention to details.
