Volunteer in Greece - Refugee and Local Community Projects
- Greece
About Program
Greece is a beautiful country, with over 6000 islands, the bluest waters, delicious food and incredible architecture. Complete with whitewashed houses, plenty of sunshine, and a relaxed lifestyle, Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. It is however, one of the main landing spots for refugees fleeing war and persecution from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Africa.
IVI work with the refugee camps, as well as the local communities, which have been impacted by the refugee crisis. Our projects here are focused on those wishing to make a real difference through humanitarian work and community focused program like teaching, kindy and community enhancement programs in Chios.

Our warehouse is divided into four areas: storage, free shop, office, and local shop-plastic area. It serves as our central hub for sorting, storing donations, and running operations. In order to support these projects effectively, we depend on the organised operation of our warehouse. Daily tasks vary, with a primary focus on preparing clothes for the free shop. You will receive a brief warehouse orientation on your first day to familiarise yourself with the setup.
This project, driven by the local community, encompasses a range of activities dedicated to enhancing the aesthetics of community institutions across various regions of Chios Island. These projects are not connected to the refugee crisis, and focus on local residents on Chios island. Volunteers channel their enthusiasm into enhancing the infrastructure of local public institutions, including schools and elderly care homes that serve the community.
Within the Kindergarten Support project volunteers are placed in Kindergartens and Nursery Schools throughout Chios Island. Their role involves supporting local teachers and staff in their daily tasks and caring for children aged 3 to 6. The project strives to spark students’ interest in learning and provide assistance to teachers when needed. This opportunity suits those who thrive in structured environments.
You will be placed within a local school, working in close collaboration with educators. You will not be teaching the class on your own, but rather providing support next to the local teacher in the classroom. The students’ ages range from 3 to 12 years, and they follow the Greek curriculum. The project’s goal is to spark students’ interest in learning and offer assistance to teachers when required.
