Program Impact

To date, we’ve raised local awareness about lionfish as a sustainable food source, helping control their population and providing a new protein source. We’ve also highlighted the importance of herbivorous fish like parrotfish and surgeonfish, leading to reduced fishing of these species and healthier reefs.

We’ve involved community members in developing a coral nursery, increasing their understanding of reef threats such as bleaching and disease. This engagement fosters stewardship and responsibility towards marine conservation.

Each project we undertake directly impacts the local community by providing accurate data that empowers better-informed decisions on coastal zone and fisheries management. This data-driven approach ensures effective, sustainable conservation efforts, leading to healthier marine environments and more resilient coastal communities.

Marine conservation program in Carriacou with Reef Buddy

I only have good words for this program and its team. I accidentally found Reef Buddy while housesitting in Carriacou. I was planning to do one or 2 dives with them and ended up doing two weeks and returning for the dive master program as well! The reefs in Carriacou have been nadly damaged by the hurricane Beryl in 2024 and they really do need help to recover quicker, and the divers and volunteers are doing a great job. Not only the marine conservation program is much more fun than just diving, but also highly important. As a marine scientist, I much more prefer diving with purpose than diving just for fun.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I'd recommend doing a few weeks of the program than just one because different weeks include different conservation activities (including growing corals in the nirsery and planting them in the reefs, regular monitoring activities, removing invasive algae and other creatures such as lionfish and flamingo tongue snails), and they're all really good and fun.
Pros
  • I learned a lot
  • Incredibly affordable price for this type of activity
  • I gained new friends 😊
What other participants should know
  • Carriacou reefs need our help
  • Carriacou is not a toursty island you'll get to experience real Caribbean life (super laid back, warm people)
  • Bring a mosquito net and/or wall repellent plug in for summer months (June-September)

Amazing 4 weeks

I spent 4 weeks with Caribbean Reef Buddy and I had such a great time! It was my first time in the Caribbean and it was so exciting to see a new part of the world. Grenada is such a beautiful, peaceful island, and it was the perfect place to spend a few weeks. The best part was definitely being surrounded by staff and volunteers who are all so passionate about marine conservation. There was also a really nice balance between diving and free time, you could hang out with everyone, relax or go for hikes. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the ocean, wants to get involved in conservation and wants to get away to somewhere more quiet for a bit!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We saw 4 seahorses in one dive!

Thank you for your review Noelle!

Thank you so much for your amazing energy and enthusiasm! Having you on board with our coral nursery project was an absolute pleasure.

We will be sure to keep you updated on how everything develops, especially on the growth of the coral you tagged with your name! Thanks again for being a part of this, and we hope to see you back in the water with us soon!

Amazing program

My experience with Caribbean Reef Buddy in the Reef Renewal program was truly positive. The team is organized, present, and every dive has a clear goal.

I learned the basics of coral restoration: maintaining the nurseries, preparing fragments, transplanting them, doing "gardening" to remove algae, and doing Coral Watch surveys to feed the global database.

I dove a lot with Nora, who gave me the bug for macro photography and the world of nudibranchs. She also does a great job passing on the island's history and the events of recent years (e.g., the hurricane), which really helps you understand the scale of the impacts and puts what we observe underwater into perspective.

Carl, for his part, teaches us the discipline needed for everything to go well, and shows us corners of the island during evenings and days off.

I unfortunately wasn't able to meet Gaëlle, but she organized everything so that my arrival and stay went perfectly.

The closeness between the housing, the beach, and the dive center makes the days simple: everything is done on foot.

Finally, their relationship with the local fishermen is just as remarkable — a real, respectful dialogue that's passed on without pressure.

CRB makes a real difference for the region.

Original:

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Je resterais plus longtemps :)

3 weeks learning scuba and volunteering

I spent 3 weeks volunteering with Reef Buddy in Carriacou. I had never previously scuba dived before, but I felt comfortable and supported as a beginner and was able to get my advanced open water certification in the first week! The island of Carriacou is pretty small and remote, but holds so much beauty and will quickly feel like home. Everyone working at the dive shop was the best and made the experience so fun - not to mention the BEAUTIFUL diving scenes and impactful reef work you get to do.

Carribean reef buddy

The team were fantastic, taking 3 divers (including one teenager) who had just passed their PADI openwater course and supported them through the Advanced Open Water course and then led us through a variety of coral reef conservation tasks including Algae clearance, coral harvesting and planting as well as looking after the nursery. We saw mazing wildlife and beautiful coral reefs. Hopefully we have contributed in a small way to preserving this amazing ecosystem.

Fantastic experience, would definitely do it again!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I was terrified of doing the night dive but in the end it was an amazing experience seeing the reef in the dark as well as the phosphorescent plankton. Staff were really supportive and encouraging letting you progress at your own pace.

Hi Debbie! Thank you so much for leaving such a wonderful review! It was a absolute pleasure guiding all three of you through your Advanced Open Water course—seeing your progress and watching you dive together as a family was fantastic.

Your enthusiasm for the coral gardening and algae removal work was contagious, and the whole team truly loved having you around. We also thoroughly enjoyed our evening chats over pizza and drinks on the beach!

Thank you for bringing so much great energy to our project. We hope to see you all back in the water with us again one day!

Carribean Reef Buddy - Reef Buddy Programme

Absolutely brilliant! I was looking for something completely different to what I'd known before and I certainly got that. 4 weeks of diving in paradise with great scenery, wildlife and people made this one of the best things that I have ever done. Night dives, building artificial reefs and hunting lionfish are some of the amazing things that I got to do with CRB. It's also nice to be doing something that has a tangible impact on the reef during each dive. I hadn't had a single open water dive before but I was quickly up to scratch thanks to the quality of the instructors at Deefer. As with many others, I can only say that I wish I had longer!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Lionfish

Hi Adam,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a brilliant review!

It was an absolute pleasure having you with us for those 4 weeks, and seeing you go from your very first open water dive to mastering night dives, artificial reef building, and marine conservation was amazing!

Your enthusiasm for the lionfish hunting was incredible, but what I loved most was seeing your passion for the science behind it. I mean, the stomach content analyses, data recording sessions and especially your enthusiasm for the dissections :-)

Thank you for bringing so much great energy to the team. We miss having you around and wish you could have stayed longer too! Hopefully, we'll see you back in the water with us again in the future!

Carriacou

The two weeks I spent in Carriacou were the absolute highlight of my summer! The staff were all so lovely and welcoming, and helped me settle in with the other volunteers super quickly! I passed my advanced course quickly, thanks to the superb training offered by the dive centre, and the dive sites we were taken to were all vibrant and full of life! The programme was great fun to work on, and you always feel like you’re doing something important whether it’s cleaning the coral nursery or hunting invasive lionfish!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The wreck dives! All the wrecks are so well preserved and full of life!

A great experience

I wasn’t sure what to expect before going but pretty much everything was amazing. The staff were engaged and engaging making the learning parts easy. They also took time to make sure the whole group were able to access the information. The diving was brilliant, equipment was well maintained and up to date and the boat was lovely. The activities really felt worthwhile and you could see the difference the organisation was making.
I felt the number of dives per day/week was really good and the other volunteers were friendly and it was easy to settle in. I had worried as an older volunteer I would struggle but there was a good mix of ages.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
We ate the invasive lion fish we caught and it was surprisingly tasty
Pros
  • Great people
  • Lots of dives
  • Good impact
What other participants should know
  • Island is very remote and small

Hi Hlly,

Thank you so much for this great review! We're so glad you felt so welcome and comfortable with the volunteer team this summer.

Summer is usually a busy period with a lot of younger participants, but we had a really fantastic mix of people this time around.

Best of luck with getting back to work, and I hope we cross paths in England one day!
