Always a great experience

All of my service trips with Xela Aid/Local Hope have been memorable, impactful, and fulfilling. I have worked on several different projects--from art therapy to women's literacy, to attempting to make tortillas. The staff in Guatemala are outstanding. They are highly knowledgeable and always willing to help. The organization is well organized, established, and well respected in the community and in the U.S. I'm greatly looking forward to my next trip! This time, I'm bringing a group to share the experience.

Xela AID- A non profit that punches above its weight!

Local Hope Guatemala/Xela AID Partnerships for Self Reliance is one of those organizations that “Punches above its weight.” I have over 30 years of experience in working, consulting, volunteering, and serving nonprofits. Xela AID does so much with so little, leveraging every dollar to fulfill its mission, which is to empower families and communities to be healthy, educated and self-reliant. Xela AID is an exceptional non-profit organization that not only makes a tangible difference in the lives of communities in need but also provides incredible volunteering opportunities for individuals passionate about making a positive impact in the world.

I have been involved with Xela AID since 2015 and have been on multiple trips with family, friends and other volunteers. As a volunteer with Xela Aid, I had the privilege of experiencing firsthand the transformative power of service. Some of the activities we have been involved with have included: distributing over hundreds of shoes to needy children and youth; teaching ESL to children and youth; teaching youth public speaking skills; providing education on nutrition to young mothers; constructing and gifting chicken coops and chickens to needy families; working on construction projects; delivering and installing water filters in local homes; conducting healthy child clinics; providing education on the impact of drugs and alcohol; and working in Xela AID’s preschool and study center programs serving hundred of children. Every moment spent volunteering with Xela AID felt purposeful and rewarding.

What sets Xela AID apart is its commitment to sustainable and community-driven solutions. Rather than imposing external ideas, Xela AID works closely with local leaders and residents to identify needs and develop initiatives that empower communities to thrive independently. This approach ensures that the impact of volunteering with Xela Aid extends far beyond the duration of a volunteer's stay, creating lasting change that continues to benefit generations to come.

Overall, my experience volunteering with Xela AID was nothing short of extraordinary. Not only have I had the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that are making a real difference in the world, but I also have formed lifelong friendships and gained invaluable insights that have profoundly shaped my worldview. I wholeheartedly recommend Xela Aid to anyone seeking an impactful and rewarding volunteering experience.

Best Volunteer Vacation Ever

I recently traveled with a group to Guatemala and stayed at the new Eco Guest House at the Xela AID project. This is such a wonderful facility and the projects that we worked on were the most fulfilling activities with children of the local village. The kids were so well behaved, and the leadership of the organization made us feel welcomed. I would recommend this experience to anyone wishing for a true volunteer vacation with a purpose. This was one of the most meaningful trips I had in the many years of international travel.

What was your funniest moment?
I hiked with the children to a place called Chicibal. This is an ancient volcanic caldera high up in the mountains. I went with 4 young children and we all raced up the volcano. On our return it began to rain so I had to carry 2 of them.
Pros
  • Travel with a purpose
  • Comfortable accommodations
  • Great food

Life changing

I traveled to Guatemala several years ago with Xela Aid. It changed my life. I went there on a painting trip with some volunteer work at Xela Aid. I very quickly fell in love with the organization. The leadership and staff are committed to helping the community become independent. Every program, every activity, and every aspect of Xela is about teaching and training Guatemalans to have an education, health , and training in a way that the community can pass on what they learn to others. the Guatemalan staff is warm, appreciative and eager to develop friendships with those who come to share in their lives. Whatever one thinks this trip might be like, it far exceeds any expectations. There is attention paid to every detail. You will love the beautiful eco lodge, the food, and the unusual experiences.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I had an amazing experience sharing in an outdoor church service along a lake. As I sang with the Guatemalan group everyone there welcomed me and surrounded me with interest. It was tear jerking.

  • Full participation in the daily life of this community

Xela Aid Guatemala trip

The staff and local folks in this project were so welcoming and friendly. I totally enjoyed my trip to this village and look forward to going back. Great opportunity to help out and practice your Spanish!!!! I loved all the kids in the Montessori classroom who are doing so well. The special education program is exceptional and one of a kind in the area. I'm a vegetarian and the kitchen staff always were able to prepare good vegetarian meals. Plenty of hot water in the shower and it was so quiet in the evenings. I slept so well.

What was your funniest moment?
There were so many that nothing jumps to my mind. But I probably had more fun than I do in my daily life.
Pros
  • Great food and wonderful hotel
  • Welcoming people
  • If you don't know much Spanish there were plenty of staff who know English
Cons
  • none

I would go back in a heartbeat!

I was on a service trip with Local Hope last year. It’s a wonderful combination of comfort and connection. Comfort: the rooms, the amazing food, the garden, the space to play cards or wind down with others in the group. Connection: The staff, students, and people from San Martin in general are so welcoming. I loved being of service because I found the work to be meaningful. Each person in our group have different talents and they were put to good use - even the teenagers who organized sports games! But honestly, I got as much as I gave and went home knowing I would be back.

What was your funniest moment?
A Taiwanese woman in our group signed up for backstrap weaving lessons. She was actually really good at it, and most of it could be demonstrated. But when she wanted to communicate with her Mayan teacher (who did not speak Spanish, or Chinese!), it was funny to watch the process. She spoke to her daughter, who told me in English what she said, which I translated into Spanish to another weaver, who translated it into Mam.
Pros
  • Felt welcomed, safe and comfortable.
  • Was able to give meaningful service.
  • Cultural experience of going to the outdoor market and into homes
Cons
  • None
