Medical and Dental Mission Week in Guatemala
About Program
Rural Medical and Dental Teams provide vital healthcare services to underserved communities in Guatemala’s rural villages. Composed of doctors, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, and support staff, these teams travel to remote areas around Chichicastenango to offer medical and dental care that local populations would otherwise lack access to.
Medical teams provide general healthcare, diagnose conditions, dispense medications, and refer patients for ongoing care if necessary. Each provider typically sees around 30 patients per day. Teams set up temporary clinics in schools, churches, or community buildings, bringing all supplies with them.
Dental teams focus on basic care, primarily extractions, with restorative procedures referred to a central clinic. Dentists usually treat 15-20 patients daily. Both teams overcome logistical challenges, such as transporting supplies daily, while also educating local populations on preventive health, improving overall well-being.
