About Program

We are a registered public charity Trust in India. We have started a Children's home for young boys who have lost their parents. The goal of the Children's home is to nurture these young kids by providing them quality education, sports, yoga, meditation, etc, and mold them into useful citizens of the world.

The program calls for spending some time educating these kids with basic English skills that would help them to perform better at school. There's an attached government school that caters to poor children. The volunteers, if they so desire, can also teach basic English skills at this school.

What makes our program unique from others is that we are set up in a rural area and so the volunteers get to experience the local culture and the people in this village. The place is close to Bangalore (about 80 miles) and is very safe. Weather is pleasant throughout the year with the temperature varying between low 70s to low 90s.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. You can read about the potential dangers of orphanage volunteering here.

Program Highlights

  • One of the founders of the organization is a long term resident of California and will be glad to help, if required.
  • Experience the unique culture of rural India
  • Opportunity to work with young kids teaching them English and reshaping their lives
  • Only up to 2 volunteers at a time - Individual attention and 100% support to volunteers
  • Choices in the types of projects you can do

Program Impact

The young boys would gain tremendously from the volunteers teaching basic English conversation skills and understanding of the English language.
This would help their ability in other subjects since English is the medium of instruction in the school.

Yes, I recommend this program

Excellent opportunity to serve young children

The host are a well experienced couple, who know the needs of the volunteers from abroad.

One would receive excellent support in all activities and also in being served with local food, including plenty of vegetables and fruits. The hosts Niranjan and Vijaya are dedicated to the service to the children.

One would get the experience of guiding the children with challenging background and also teach in local schools, helping children of the community.

The children in the area are bright and enthusiastic, providing a sense of satisfaction for our contribution as volunteers.

Punganur is a small village, with a beautiful community with good weather and good water supply.

I am happy to be contacted for any additional information regarding Sanjyot Childrens Home

Volunteer India

I had a wonderful experience volunteering at The Sanjyot Orphanage. I taught english and lived with three wonderful little boys who were eager to learn! The Sanjyot Foundation is working tirelessly to provide a safe and nurturing environment for orphans. I am eager to return and encourage others to serve! It is a life changing experience. I feel I have made a difference in the children's lives and they have made a lasting impact on my life.

Tips for future travelers:
Bring a camera
Bring children's books and workbooks
Pack lightly and for tropical weather
Bring your own feminine products (can be hard to find)
Bring a book for your personal time
Bring a debit card because you will need pill out the Indian currency at the local ATM
Bring a fanny pack or money belt to keep you money safe
Make sure you have multiple copies of your visa
Make sure you get travel medical insurance (it is inexpensive and could be very important)
Make sure you bring pepto bismol or other stomach remedies (probiotics etc.)
( I did not get sick but it is very common when traveling to India)
Make sure you drink bottled or filtered water

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
You will be living in a rural village so be prepared to truly live the authentic Indian lifestyle! Embrace it! The foundation will take great care of you and will be well fed and have western world amenities in your room such as a toilet, shower and wifi.
