About Program

Volunteers play an integral role in HIAS’ efforts to help refugees in the U.S. and abroad.

Kenya hosts many refugees, mostly from Somalia, with smaller numbers from South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia. Many are survivors of torture and sexual and gender-based violence.

HIAS Kenya operates four offices in Nairobi, providing social assistance, mental health support, livelihoods programming, and legal aid. Pro bono lawyers and legal fellows interview refugees, identify the most vulnerable for resettlement to safe third countries, and support legal protection programming. Pro bono lawyers and fellows should be available for a one-month deployment, with off-site training provided in advance.
