About Program

The Travelteer Mental Health Program collaborates with Sri Lankan medical professionals in neighbourhood hospitals and clinics. Students of psychology can learn about Sri Lankan approaches to mental health treatment through this programme.

As part of the programme, volunteers shadow practitioners in the Western and Ayurvedic fields, providing insight into the various forms of mental health therapy practised in Sri Lankan communities, this allows our volunteers the chance to hone their skills while learning about Sri Lanka's vibrant culture and lush landscapes through mentoring from local experts.

Working in conjunction with local hospitals and community clinics, our Mental Health Placement gives volunteers the opportunity to explore the ways that Eastern Ayurvedic therapy can make a tangible and positive difference to people’s lives and communities. The placement includes both hands-on and observational projects, with volunteers shadowing and assisting healthcare professionals.

An Eye-Opening 4-Week Journey with Travelteer

My 4-week trip with Travelteer on their Mental Health Volunteering Programme in Sri Lanka was truly transformative. Working in local hospitals, we made a significant impact on mental health support, and it was an incredibly fulfilling experience. It also boosted my experience for my CV.

One of the most captivating aspects of the journey was delving into the world of Ayurvedic treatments and witnessing how they address mental health in Sri Lanka. I gained invaluable knowledge about this traditional healing system, which opened my eyes to a holistic approach to well-being.

The highlight of my journey was observing treatments in rural clinics that were less developed. It was an eye-opening experience to see the dedication of healthcare providers and the resilience of the patients in these underserved communities.

Throughout the trip, Travelteer's commitment to making a positive impact was evident. They created a supportive environment that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the local culture and better understand the mental health challenges faced by the community.

Pros
  • Learnt lots of culture
  • learnt lots of different treatments
  • got experience for my CV
Cons
  • The hospitals were somewhat rundown and it made me feel a bit sad
  • Most the roles were just observational which is somewhat understandable
