About Program

Spend 14 days biking around Thailand participating in various volunteer activities including outreach to a disabled girls home and teaching english to children at a rural mountainside school. Begin your journey in Bangkok, visiting multiple must-see sights, ending with 2 days at Ban Rachawadee Girl’s Home, where you will have a rewarding, moving, and fun experience spending time with girls between the ages of 7 and 18. Get to know them and help provide entertainment in the forms of picnics, workshops, arts and crafts.

Then, fly north to Chang Rai where the rest of this amazing adventure will take place. Kayak, hike and bike your way through a large number of breathtaking destinations until you reach Doi Mae Salong, a rural mountain school. Here you will stop for a few days to teach English to young students who, in many cases, have never interacted or received any education from a native English speaker before in their lives. The trip ends with a flight back to Bangkok from Chang Rai airport, where you can continue to explore on your own, or head back home. Why did you originally decide to start BikeHike Adventures?

From the age of 20, I've spent my life traveling the world, guiding adventure trips and living with cultures worldwide. At the age of 29, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, and since I had so much travel experience, and an entrepreneurial spirit, I decided to start my own adventure travel company.

I've always believed that if we have to spend our lives working, why not do what we love. I turned my passion into my career. I also wanted to give the opportunity for others to experience the world, other cultures and adventure travel the way that I had, so I started BikeHike back in 1994.

What is it like to see so many people respond so well to your programs?

Very rewarding. We're going into our 18th year and we have grown at a steady pace, received many accolades and have a dedicated group of travellers who come back again and again. 9 trips is the highest repeats so far. We have a few clients who are at this level with us.

I heard that you participated in the BikeHike Adventure to Costa Rica. How was it?

I've done many of the Costa Rica trips, but yes, I have done the Turtles and Trails adventure. It was wonderful. The experiences that we had with the turtles was so rewarding. What we do on the turtle volunteering section is gather the eggs from the Leatherback turtles as they are laying their eggs and move them to a different location so that poachers are not able to find them.

On the trip that I was on 25 sea turtles came up. It was a lot of work, extremely rewarding and we also saw a boat of poachers that evening looking for the nests. It was very hard work, in the middle of the night and I wasn't able to get photos as flashes are not allowed on the beach when the turtles are coming up.

What made this experience unique and special to you?

To be able to be so close to the turtles, holding a bag underneath the turtles, while they are in a trance. Their eggs are dropping into that bag and then digging a hole that replicates that nest and burying them, wow, what an experience. Also knowing that we are making a difference to the extinction of the Leatherback turtles.

Much still has to be done on the side of education to the poachers to know that if they were to instead think of sustainable ways that the turtles can earn them money, it is more beneficial to them to protect them as opposed to poach them.
