About Program

We need your help to rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans! We are always looking for individuals to join our volunteer construction crew and work on residential construction projects in the Lower Ninth Ward under skilled supervision. We welcome all willing and able individuals regardless of skill level throughout the year. We provide all necessary project training, tools, and safety equipment, so even if you've never swung a hammer, you can help rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. While we do not expect you to arrive with any previous construction experience, we require all volunteers to be willing and physically able to learn new rebuild skills, and to help with any chores around the volunteer house.

Individuals will join an international team to work from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday through Saturday on our open projects in the Lower Ninth Ward. We expect all volunteers staying in our volunteer house to commit to this schedule full-time.

Program Highlights

  • By working with us, you will get a unique perspective on disaster recovery, housing as a social justice issue, and local New Orleans culture.
  • The vast majority of the time, we work on residential building projects, but we occasionally take on lot clearing, data collection, or collaboration with other nonprofits in the area.
  • Individuals with strong construction skills and mastery of the English language may be able to grow into a leadership role.

Program Impact

Volunteering with lowernine.org means becoming part of a community dedicated to rebuilding what was lost over 18 years ago. We are committed to not only utilizing the skills that volunteers bring, but further refining and developing skills pertaining to construction, rebuilding, and development.
