About Program
Set within a 3,000 hectare conservancy ranch, about 40 km from the majesty of the Victoria Falls, the Africa Centre for Holistic Management (ACHM) offers volunteers a truly unique experience, entirely off the typical Tourist trail.
Holistic Management, which was developed in the 1990’s by Zimbabwean-born ecologist Allan Savory, in essence, combines livestock into large herds to mimic the behavior of the wild herds that freely roamed the African bush-veld in days of old. Planned grazing, on a rotating schedule harnesses the power of their hooves to break up hard ground, allowing air and water to penetrate, trampling down old grass so the soil is covered and eludes the drying effects of sun and wind. Dung and urine help enrich the hoof-prepared soil, so grasses grow thick and tall.
