Japan Mini Semester: Culture, Adventure & Connection with Pacific Discovery
About Program
Experience Japan like a local!
Join a small group of like-minded gap year students for a 4–6 week journey through Japan’s vibrant cities, peaceful countryside, and ancient temples. Designed for students aged 17–22, this mini semester combines cultural immersion, service learning, and adventure to help you develop independence, global perspective, and lifelong friendships.
You’ll explore Tokyo’s neon streets and Kyoto’s tranquil temples, stay in traditional ryokans, hike through the Japanese Alps, and contribute to a hands-on community service project in forest restoration. Along the way, you’ll gain practical travel and life skills, confidence navigating new cultures, and an appreciation for Japan’s unique blend of tradition and innovation.
Pacific Discovery programs are designed to foster personal growth through experiential learning — perfect for students taking a gap year, deferring college, or looking to earn optional academic credit while exploring the world.

Sustainability
We recently embarked on a Net Positive Benefit project where we are qualifying what impacts our groups have on the local communities, taking into consideration carbon emissions +/- social impacts +/- conservation impacts +/- community impacts. On our programs, students engage with non-profit organisations such as Litter Intelligence, Scholars of Sustenance, Ulu Mau puanui, Llama Pack project where they directly work for a better future - planting trees, eradicating invasive weed species, helping local communities and food banks.
