Year & Gap: Spend one full academic year in the friendly country of Denmark, while attending a local high school and living with a welcoming host family. Explore Denmark's fairy-tale villages, complete with castles and town markets, and spend weekends in Copenhagen. You'll get additional Danish language classes throughout the year, though it will likely be easy to learn, as the Danes are so friendly and most also speak English.
As an AFSer, you could also have the adventure of being placed in Greenland or the Faroe Islands, north of Scotland. The Danes tend to be cosmopolitan in their attitudes and lifestyle. The Danish standard of living is high and most Danes are well educated. They take pride in their country's highly developed public schools, higher education, and health services. There are two types of school that you may be enrolled in. You may be placed in the first or second year of Gymnasium, which is a 3-year college prep school similar to high school, or Folkeskole, which is geared toward 6-16 year olds.
AFS-USA Grants & Scholarships
The opportunity to study abroad should be available to everyone, regardless of their financial means. Annually, we award scholarships to about half of our study abroad students.
