Serve a Year with AmeriCorps VISTA

I loved my experience with AmeriCorps VISTA! I relocated to a different part of my state to serve and the other VISTAs I served with did a great job making me feel welcome and making sure I had everything I needed, including help with housing. During my service year I developed an English Language Arts curriculum for an after school program, translated outreach material into relevant languages for our clients, established a food pantry at my site, and developed communication and outreach material. Because of my AmeriCorps service I was able to get my masters degree for free after my first service year! I loved it so much I served twice more. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who wants a gap year or summer program to help them build their resume, to earn money and scholarship eligibility, and to explore a new community or serve in their own hometown.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I think my biggest advice would be to go with the flow! Service with AmeriCorps is an incredible and unique experience and taking any changes or unexpected events in stride will help you make the most of your service year.
