Abroad Experience

The trip I was able experience with MEI academy has fully changed my world view. Learning about the history on other continents is something taught in school, but seeing first hand these monumental events was so impactful. I was able to see new countries, talk to new people, learn so much about the world, and really just develop my perspectives and knowledge. The community was so amazing on my group with great teachers and students. I would recommend this amazing experience to anyone who’s interested.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I’d recommend to other travellers to make sure to stay on top of their work. It’s easy to push things aside in order to explore, but the piled up work will still need to be completed, and it can become very overwhelming.

When you're jet lagged on the first day, and they just keep telling you that we are going to become a family and that this will be the experience of your life, you couldn't believe them less. But 30 days later a group of 42 are all crying on their last night together. And that pretty much sums up the bonds formed over such an incredible experience. I did mei 4 months ago and not a single day has passed where I don't think about the trip. About the friends made, the places we saw, the memories, the experiences the food. MEI changed my view on everything and I couldn't be more grateful!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I wouldn't be afraid, I wouldn't have spend so long worrying about if I was going to make friends or get lost. I would dive head in and fully immerse myself in the experience from day one.

English In Western Europe (Grade 12 English)

This program really helped me grow as a person. This isn't because the program was good. In hindsight, I wouldn't spend my money on this, but I do think it changed me for the better. I made friends I will never forget, even now that I am home a month later. It was a great way to force growth out of myself, which is what I was looking for out of this trip.

I found the staff uncommitted. I often felt they were rushing us out of places like the Dachau concentration camp and the Sistine Chapel. When we went to the Pantheon, they weren't even aware it was free student admission and didn't encourage us to go in. I'm not sure why we'ren't doing lessons at this time or need to work on assignments. There was no way to contact staff other than Google chat, which is a little scary when you are out in the city and may need help. I think they were using it as more of a cheap vacation than actually wanting to be our teachers and mentors.

The hotels were also awful. Other than Verona, I had to share a bed in every location. They were pushed together (often unmovable) but had separate napkin-like sheets. I would say the hostel ranks second for the most comfortable bed. That's bad. Most of the time, there was minimal privacy, and I could not even go to the bathroom. There are also no real common spaces (where we couldn't go into each other's rooms at one point), so if you need to work on projects or want to spend time with one other person or even just not leave the hotel to hang out or work, you can't. You had to use cafes, which sometimes felt like a waste of money

The content of the course was great. I loved learning about the history of different locations and how the morning notes worked despite how intimidating it sounds to write 800/900 words.

Overall, it was a good experience that made me come back a better person, but if you are from Ontario, use a different school. This one targets rich teens from Alberta, avoiding their long exams.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
1) They do provide a complimentary breakfast and dinner. Still, the limit for us was 15 euros, not including any water you needed (we either had to sacrifice it from our budget or bring our water bottle) or the service fee (this varied on the night and how the staff was feeling), so I would consider budgeting to buy yourself food some nights so you can buy some protein.

2) Plan out some things you want to see in each location, and once you get the hotels, look at their distance from the hotel and plan out walking distance so you are prepared for your free time with activities

3) It is certainly not necessary, but I would suggest having at least one friend on this program. It can make or break your trip having someone who has your back. You will have to travel in groups of three for everything so you don't want to become isolated.
Pros
  • Good chance to grow up more
  • Make new friends you wouldn't otherwise
  • Preview what university might be like
Cons
  • Poor hotels
  • Limited budget for food
  • Lack of activities

MEI ACADEMY - YES YES YES

I had the TIME OF MY LIFE on MEI! It was the perfect mix of fun adventure and schoolwork. This sparked the beginning of a whole new world of travel for me and seriously everyone should be learning through this program! I went on the summer trip and went to four countries and met my best friends who I still visit in another country TO THIS DAY!!!! It’s incredible and if you time things out right you will have the most incredible experience. Do homework at night in a cafe and on the bus, and otherwise adventure!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Take more photos! I was always scared to ask people to take photos for me/of me. You will only be in these places maybe once in your life, who cares! JUST GET THE PHOTO!

Experiential Learning at Its Best

MEI Academy offers an unparalleled overseas educational experience. Their programs are academically rigorous, but strike a perfect balance of both providing a safe overseas learning experience with adventurousness and immersive cultural experiences. The educators are outstanding, with strong curricular backgrounds and attentiveness to the social-emotional needs of their students while overseas. The locations are amazing, and the accommodations are always situated within walking distance of many major historical sites. If you're looking for an uncompromising experience for a high-school aged student, this is THE Canadian-based overseas educational program.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be prepared to do some academics before you leave. There is pre-departure work associated with each course.

Amazing MEI Experience

My MEI was unreal! All of my teachers were very knowledgeable and put in so much effort for the student's success. The lectures and assignments were very interactive and like nothing I had ever experienced before. Throughout this trip, everyone became a family and I have gained lifelong friends and memories that I will cherish forever! The entire trip was a blast and I would 10/10 recommend this to any future students, who love to travel and want to push their education further.

It was amazing

So I was on the 2018 trek 1 and it was the most amazing experience of my life. I succeeded in my academics like I never would in regular school. You really become a family and enjoy the most beautifull places in the world! The teachers are amazing so helpful and so smart! No matter what your question is for school or personal they always have an answer. They also push students to always do their best and leave their influence and each and every student. The program also makes sure we visit any important sight possible. We not only see important monuments but we learn so much about them and that is priceless. So much more amazing to go and see the Eiffel Tower and learn about its significance right then and their rather than in a classroom.

What would you improve about this program?
Mabey just one or two days more to relax in citys like Paris and London!

Questions & Answers

Many of our programs are based on the Humanities, so related academic work includes becoming an expert and then giving a tour of a famous site, or writing and performing poetry and other creative work. We do have a Biology course that focuses on lab work in Costa Rica and other science-based activities.
