Diversity & Inclusion 💙

Rustic Pathways maintains a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination and bullying and supports every student regardless of race, ethnicity, or national origin.

Program staff complete annual DEIA, cultural sensitivity, and LGBTQ+ competency training, supported by external partners including Gender Spectrum, with scenario-based role-plays on racial discrimination and microaggressions.
Rustic Pathways welcomes all students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or socioeconomic status, and no student is denied enrollment based on any of these characteristics.

Rustic Pathways uses gender-affirming practices across housing, pronoun use, and program design, and plans rooming for transgender and nonbinary students individually and confidentially with the student and family before travel.

Rustic Pathways discloses when local laws in a program destination affect LGBTQ+ travelers, so students and families can plan with full information.
Rustic Pathways supports students with ADHD, dyslexia, and autism spectrum conditions. Families share the student’s current support plan during intake; Program Leaders are briefed on the strategies that help the student participate fully; and Rustic Pathways selects a program whose structure and pace fit the student.

Personal Travel Advisors at Rustic Pathways create a customized plan that may include predictable routines, sensory breaks, smaller group settings, and clear communication guidelines.
Rustic Pathways uses a proactive, individualized assessment for each student with a disability or chronic condition and matches that student to a destination and itinerary that fit their needs, reviewing lodging, transportation, and daily activities.

Students with chronic health conditions or daily medication needs can travel with Rustic Pathways after a medical review.

Rustic Pathways is candid about limits: programs often take place in remote locations and developing regions where infrastructure such as ramps, paved walkways, and lifts may be limited or nonexistent, so universal accessibility is not possible in every destination.

Impact 🌎

Rustic Pathways hires local staff at all levels of operations and prioritizes locally owned vendors, investing economic benefit directly in the communities its programs visit.

92% of Rustic Pathways seasonal staff are local to the regions where programs operate. Rustic Pathways works to minimize its environmental footprint and offers wildlife experiences only on programs where they support conservation and animal welfare can be assured.

The Rustic Pathways Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3), has raised more than $1.14 million for community projects since 2017.
Rustic Pathways treats ethics as an operational constraint and does not offer orphanage tourism or poverty tourism, and runs wildlife experiences only where they support conservation and animal welfare, with no elephant riding, tiger temples, or captive animal entertainment.

When priorities conflict, Rustic Pathways applies a decision-making hierarchy that puts student safety first, followed by legal compliance and ethical responsibility, with financial impact never the primary driver.

These standards have cost Rustic Pathways revenue: programs have been declined, partnerships have been ended, and destinations have been exited when ethical standards could not be maintained.

My review

Had a great time the whole week. The food was great and the group coordinators made sure to confirm mine along with everyone else’s every needs were met. I’d like to issue a special shout out to our counselor Sydney for putting in the extra work taking people on late night convenience store runs when they were desperately needed along with having a great attitude all week. The housing was great as well, with my time in the city being very enjoyable, along with the home stay family being very welcoming and understanding.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I’d want to spend more time in Tokyo/shibuya
Pros
  • Food was great
  • Counselors were great
  • Home stay family was great
Cons
  • Some people in the group were more so “not my crowd”
  • Weather
  • Spent a lot of time in a village where there was not much to do

Best trip ever

This trip was absolutely amazing. I’m a 17-year-old male, and I had an absolute blast. The counselors had a vast understanding of the area and took us to some amazing spots. I feel that I deeply connected with all three of my Counselors. Throughout the trip, they constantly asked if we wanted to visit anywhere or do anything specific, and every time we asked, our request was always met. I definitely recommend this if you’re looking to explore Japan. Initially, I was a little scared of how much free time we were going to have, but after arriving, I quickly realized that we had a lot of it. This was truly an amazing trip. Thank you so much to Scott, Tim, and Ashley. I will truly remember and cherish this trip for the rest of my life.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I fell in love with soba a traditional Japanese barley noodle.

Phenomenal Program

Though there was less service than expected, the service trip to Japan exceeded all other expectations. The group leaders were well informed about the locations, we were taken to various different places, all with a different kind of impact, we were encouraged to think about the purpose of the trip for ourselves and how we could accomplish our goals in Japan. It truly was a very well thought out and carefully planned trip, with an amazing team to support the students. I highly recommend. Thank you.

What was your funniest moment?
At night, usually between 9:00 and 10:00 PM, one of the group leaders, Chet, would play cards with some students and show us magic tricks in the kitchen of the hostel we were staying in. Chet was hilariously good at slapjack (one student made the comment that his arm was like a gun). Despite him crushing us every time in slapjack, he remained humble and courteous, and always made us smile.
Pros
  • Great team of group leaders
  • Fantastic and engaging activities
  • Delicious foods
Cons
  • Lack of service
  • No background checks on students (as far as I know)

Amazing Program!

This was an amazing experience and so unique and eye opening to the culture of this beautiful place. This program tours throughout all of the different parts of Japan and the Japanese culture. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the quiet gardens of Kanazawa. The program leaders led us each with their different skills to help us make the most of this trip. We were able to learn so much about the different foods, cultures, activities and everything we need to know about Japanese life. From the amazing housing and train rides. Our program leaders made this an unforgettable experience.

The most unfamiliar thing I ate was a kebab of grilled eel liver. We found it in a fish market in Kanazawa, and knew we had to try it.

Life Changing

Words cannot explain how amazing this trip was. As an avid fan of Japanese culture and Japanese media, this trip was something I have been dreaming about for years. Not only did we experience city life in Tokyo, but we lived in a more smaller area to see what life was like beyond a huge city in Japan. In Tokyo, we ate amazing authentic food as well as shopped depending on the interests of people within the group. The adults with us were easily approachable and easily the most friendly people in the world. They’re willing to accommodate for the needs of others and are flexible with adjusting plans if needed based on the wants/needs of others. I can’t express how much this trip has not only changed me as a person, but has prepared me for life beyond school and given me a brand new mindset beyond what I considered to be the ‘norm’.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
The biggest thing for me was the fear of being by myself around people I’ve never met before. It’s hard for me to easily find and connect to others, but through that fear, came amazing results. I felt like I was able to get to know everyone even if I wasn’t as close to some more than others. My advice is for people to be willing to open up and get out there. Fear is scary, but fear also leads to bravery. Be brave.
Pros
  • Friendly group
  • Flexible counselors
  • Experienced new culture

Absolutely Life Changing Experience

I’ve traveled with this company a few times before, and they never failed to create a supportive and intimate environment. They facilitate connection amongst the students on the trip, as well as ensure everyone feels included. This was the first time any students went on the program, and they were very open to feedback to create a better trip! I met people that I hope to keep in my life forever, and I’m sure many people will have similar experiences. Out of all the trips, this was the one that I made the strongest connections with, and I had such an amazing time being able to be on my own and experience a culture I’ve never been to before.

What was your funniest moment?
Always just sitting at group dinners and laughing with all of my peers. I had some major laughs with every single person
Pros
  • Meeting amazing new people
  • Seeing and experiencing a new culture
  • Practicing my individuality and responsibility
Cons
  • Sometimes the traveling took a long time
  • The trip was too short for some things
