About Program

Our internship program provides young biologists an opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the field, gaining hands-on experience running a research project of their own design. Before arriving, our interns are challenged to come up with a research topic, review the relevant literature, and create a methodology with the support of our intern-supervisor.

Once in-country, interns are trained in relevant field techniques. Whether its mist-netting for birds in the early hours of the morning, fishing at mid-day or staying out late hunting for frogs, PLT will make sure that our interns are confident in the methodology needed to move their research forward. The internship program is designed to give young scientists the opportunity to take control of every step of a scientific project. From conception to completion, our interns are in the driver seat.

Perfect 1 week of voltouneering

We had an amazing time with PLT. We learned so much about animals, their behaviour and the work of biologists.
The time, out in the filed was absolut perfect and we enjoyed every second.
Furthermore we had a great time with the staff of PLT, also during the sparetime. We went to the beach, in pubs and kajaking.
The food during the weeks was great and on weekend there a some options to go eat in the city. Absolutly recomended.
And not the last time we did voltuneering
Thanks to all for an unforgatable time

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Dont think about to go to PLT, just go there. Its totally worth it
Pros
  • The friendly staff
  • The time, out in the field

Para la Tierra - Museum Taxonomy Internship

My stay with Para la Tierra surpassed my expectations on every front. The team is incredibly dedicated and yet so friendly and down to earth. Beyond that, I really appreciated the freedom I had to either help with ongoing projects or pursue my independent lines of research. There's really something for everyone at PLT. You'll get to see some amazing places near Pilar, and there’s every opportunity to travel further around Paraguay and beyond during your stay here if you feel inclined. Make no mistake, this is a great opportunity that I would recommend to anyone with an interest in natural history.

My internship with Para La Tierra

I lived with Para La Tierra for three months and loved my time there and the people I lived with. During my stay I studied burrowing owls and the impact cattle have on there behavior. I also got to visit the dry Chaco and saw many animals such as tapirs, peccaries, coral snakes, and many birds such as flamingos. I also got to help a bit in the community through eco club where we taught kids about nature. During my stay there where also a number of holidays and festivals that where fun to see. Overall, I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in studying abroad to consider Para La Tierra.

Pros
  • Freedom of study
  • Supportive staff
  • Fun environment

Internship Maxim Koschmann

When I started my internship with Para la Tierra I couldn’t have imagined i would have such an amazing time, from the professional support to the warm welcome from the staff, everything was excellent. While doing my research on reptiles and amphibians I experienced so many amazing things in nature. Their nature education program ‘Voces de la Naturaleza’ is as important as it is impressive and it was an honour to participate.

I can’t recommend this internship more!! I would go back this instant. The overall experience helped me figure out what i want to do in the professional field.

Pros
  • Professional support
  • Welcoming atmosphere
  • Unique experience

Herpetology Internship

The whole experience was amazing from start to finish with so many experiences that you otherwise not get the opportunity to have. Staff are helpful with your interests and progressing the project you chose whilst in Pilar.
You can also get a chance to help other interns with their projects and also expand your own interests in the surrounding biodiversity, not just focusing on species in your own project. It is great thing to do when you want to beat the crowds and boost your CV, with many transferrable skills.

Pros
  • Freedom to research and do what you like
  • The area is very safe
  • Experience a culture and country that not many people have the opportunity to

Could not have wished for a better place

Besides the fact that I met the most amazing people during my stay, with whom I hope to remain friends for the rest of my life, but I also learned more than I could have dreamed. The opportunity to carry out your own scientific project at Para la Tierra, from design to publication, is what makes them unique. You are always offered help if you need it, but you are also given the chance to explore your own abilities and are able to improve your skills. You are not obligated to do anything, but at the same time there are many opportunities. I wouldn't change my time at PLT for anything and if I could do it all over again, I would.

Pros
  • Conduct your own research
  • Meet amazing new people
  • Learn about the Paraguayan culture
Cons
  • You need to be able to afford it
