Three month VSRP Visit at KAUST in AI labs

Spending the last quarter of the year—October through December—at KAUST for the Visiting Student Research Program (VSRP) was a truly fascinating experience. For those considering an academic internship that blends high-level research with a unique international lifestyle, here is my breakdown of the experience. Working in the AI Labs, the technical resources are excellent; the compute power significantly accelerated my experiments compared to what I might expect elsewhere. The environment is really international, offering good networking opportunities with teammates and alumni at top global institutions. However, three months pass quickly. I highly recommend defining your project specifics before arrival to avoid losing the first few weeks to planning. Campus life feels like a self-contained town with extensive facilities, from gyms and pools to sports fields. The winter weather was pleasant, avoiding the intense summer heat, and commuting is effortless. Accommodation was a highlight—modern housing with a private bathroom—though I found the dining options leaned a bit too heavily on fast food for my taste. Socially, there are plenty of activities like board games and sports clubs, but the atmosphere is calm; do not expect a wild party campus. The access to the Red Sea for snorkeling is a unique perk. Organization was 10/10, handling visas and travel seamlessly. As a German, I found information arrived a little later than I am used to, but everything worked out smoothly. Overall, it is a productive, comfortable environment for focused research without logistical distractions and a great place to collect international experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Truly use the time you have here. Meet people from around the world and exchange thoughts and knowledge. Use the great facilities at work and for leisure. It is in your hands how good of a time you will have here.
Pros
  • International Experience
  • Work environment
  • Organisation
Cons
  • Far away from the next city
  • Not easy as a vegeterian
  • Traveling outside of campus is more complicated

Great Opportunity

My KAUST VSRP internship had its ups and downs. Communication with the visa onboarding person was frustrating as delays and unclear responses on required documents like the invitation letter came incredibly close to the start date. Getting a SIM card from the mobile guy was a hassle too as he's rarely around and doesn't offer the cheaper plan for no apparent reason.

The science side was good though, with up-to-date instruments available for use in state-of-the-art labs. Funding is decent with a good monthly stipend, solid insurance, and relaxed campus life. Plenty of activities like sports and art clubs to join, even if the community page is outdated. Good transport for campus, Thuwal, and Jeddah trips. Despite onboarding issues, I'd still recommend it for international research opportunities and good community life.

Nice experience, even nicer people

My Internship lasted 3 months and gave me the oppurtunity to experience and learn about new research areas as well as laboratory equipment. While the experience itself of course heavily depends on the appartment your in, the organisation I heard was in every case not that satisfying. The visa process and flying situation was spontaneously decided. Beside that, my work environment and housing was really good. Also, KAUST offers great chances to meet people outside your research topic through various events such as weekly board games nights or art clubs.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
While going scuba diving, I saw a silky shark - amazing
Pros
  • free events
  • everything is close by
Cons
  • difficult to get outside and see Saudi

A Transformative Research Experience

My experience as a VSRP intern at KAUST has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my academic career. I worked in the GCEco Lab under Dr. Maggie Johnson, where I designed and ran a full experimental project on sea cucumbers and coral reef ecology. The mentorship, scientific rigor, and collaborative atmosphere in the Johnson Lab were exceptional. My lab mates were incredibly supportive — I learned something new every single day, whether in the field, in the tank room, or during data analysis sessions.

Daily life at KAUST was equally memorable. The campus offers a vibrant social environment, world-class athletic facilities, and countless opportunities to get involved — from diving in the Red Sea to hitting the gym, joining sports groups, or simply enjoying time with friends. The accommodation was comfortable and modern, and the campus itself feels like a small, international city with everything you need.

One of the highlights of my internship was the chance to explore Saudi Arabia and the region. KAUST is uniquely positioned for weekend trips, cultural experiences, and outdoor adventures. I was able to travel, dive, hike, and discover places I never imagined I’d see during a research internship.

The research facilities at KAUST are truly state-of-the-art. Having access to advanced labs, tank systems, field sites, and technical support made it possible to carry out ambitious experiments that wouldn’t be feasible in many other places.

Practical Advice for Future Interns:
Be proactive about connecting with your lab before arrival — it helps you hit the ground running. Make the most of the social and athletic opportunities on campus, explore the incredible landscapes around the Kingdom, and don’t hesitate to dive deep into the research environment. KAUST offers a rare blend of scientific excellence, community, and adventure, and you will get out of it what you put in.

Overall, my VSRP experience broadened my scientific skills, expanded my network, and gave me lasting memories — both in the lab and beyond. I would recommend it wholeheartedly to any student eager to combine world-class research with a once-in-a-lifetime cultural and personal experience.

What would you improve about this program?
One area I would improve is the onboarding process. Pre-arrival communication was often slow, especially regarding travel logistics, which made the transition more stressful than it needed to be. Clearer instructions, faster response times, and a detailed step-by-step arrival guide (from the airport to housing to the lab) would make a huge difference for future interns. Strengthening this part of the program would help students feel supported and confident from day one.
Pros
  • Exceptional research environment - amazing mentorship in the GCEco Lab and world-class facilities
  • Great social and athletic life on campus, with a strong sense of community
  • Incredible opportunities to travel, dive, and explore Saudi Arabia and the region
Cons
  • Onboarding communication was slow and unclear, especially regarding travel logistics
  • Retail, groceries, and food on campus were relatively expensive, with limited affordable options
  • Stipend/cash advance processing took longer than expected, requiring use of personal funds early on

A Transformative Research Experience

My internship at KAUST was truly life-changing. I had the opportunity to work closely with leading researchers in cutting-edge research. The hands-on experience I gained in the lab allowed me to apply concepts from my studies in a real-world research setting. Beyond technical skills, I learned the importance of teamwork, persistence, and creative problem-solving. Everyone in the lab, from my mentors to fellow interns, was incredibly supportive and willing to share their knowledge. This experience not only strengthened my research skills but also inspired me to pursue a future in advanced technology and innovation. I am grateful for the guidance, mentorship, and friendships I gained during my time at KAUST.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go in with an open mind and a genuine curiosity to learn. KAUST offers incredible research facilities and a vibrant international community, so take every opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds and fields. Be proactive, ask questions, share ideas, and don’t hesitate to explore topics outside your comfort zone. Life on campus is unique, so make time to enjoy the surroundings and cultural exchange as much as the research itself. Most importantly, stay curious and make the most of every moment! It’s an experience that can truly shape your future.

Best 7 months!

My internship at KAUST has been a great experience, both academically and personally. Working in Professor Rosado’s lab gave me the chance to explore microbial biotechnology using advanced computational tools, while collaborating with people from all over the world. The facilities and resources here make it easy to focus on research, and the multicultural environment creates a unique sense of community. Life on campus is very comfortable, with everything from housing to recreation well organized. My advice to future interns would be to make the most of the opportunities both inside and outside the lab and to explore Saudi Arabia as much as they can.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Travel around Saudi at least once a month.
Pros
  • Excellent facilities
  • Multicultural environment
  • Amazing housing Facilities
Cons
  • I would like a few more food options

Amazing opportunity!

It was a hard decision to come here - four months away from everything I know, first time living alone with a full-time job, in a different language community, in another climate. But it was a good decision - I made many friends from all over the world, got to know a new culture, learned a lot in my field as well as soft skills - time management, working alone on my own project. Besides work, there is a lot to do: there are a lot of restaurants, two sport centres, two beaches, and buses to Jeddah every day and to Makkah and Medina every week!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would come in August - there are not many people and events in July, and it's extremely hot. Also, there is air conditioning everywhere - remember to take something warm to sit inside
Pros
  • welcoming community
  • after-work activities
  • opportunity to travel
Cons
  • working nine-to-five form Sunday to Friday (form what i heard depending on a faculty)
  • extreme temperatures
