Best intership Program in world

Participating in the Visiting Student Research Program (VSRP) at KAUST has been one of the most enriching and transformative experiences of my academic journey. From the moment I was accepted, the level of organization and support provided by the admissions and administrative teams was outstanding. Every step of the process—from documentation to travel arrangements—was clearly communicated and efficiently managed. The support before, during, and after arrival makes VSRP truly stand out among internship programs around the world.

Upon arriving at the KAUST campus, I was immediately impressed by the world-class research environment. The university offers access to cutting-edge laboratories, modern libraries, and advanced technical resources that allow students to fully engage in high-level research. The campus is designed to foster innovation and collaboration, and every detail—from the housing facilities to the research infrastructure—contributes to a productive and inspiring experience.

One of the most valuable aspects of the program is the mentorship and guidance provided by KAUST faculty. Working alongside renowned professors and researchers who are leaders in their fields has been an incredible opportunity. These mentors not only provide academic supervision but also encourage open discussions, creative thinking, and professional development. Their dedication and willingness to support interns throughout the project creates a truly collaborative and respectful research atmosphere.

The diversity of the KAUST community adds an exceptional dimension to the internship experience. Students, researchers, and staff from all over the world come together in a unique cultural setting that promotes exchange and understanding. Living and working in such a multicultural environment fosters personal growth, global awareness, and lifelong friendships. The campus is vibrant, safe, and inclusive, offering numerous social, academic, and recreational activities to make the most of the experience outside the lab.

Moreover, the financial and logistical support offered by KAUST allows students to focus fully on their research and learning. The stipend, accommodation, travel expenses, and visa processing are all covered, which removes common barriers faced by students in other programs. This level of support reflects KAUST’s commitment to making research accessible and rewarding for talented students from across the globe.

In summary, the VSRP at KAUST is more than just a research internship—it is a comprehensive academic and cultural experience that empowers students to grow as scientists, professionals, and global citizens. The combination of outstanding facilities, expert mentorship, international community, and exceptional support makes it one of the best internship programs in the world. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be part of this environment and would highly recommend the program to any student who is passionate about research and innovation.

Amazing experience

Kaust has been instrumental in my growth, helping me both professionally and personally. It has been the best decision to join the research program, and I'm grateful for the opportunities and experiences I've had here. I've learned so much and have been able to develop my skills and knowledge in a supportive and stimulating environment. The people I've met and the connections I've made have been invaluable, and I appreciate the freedom to pursue my interests and passions. I'm confident that the experience and expertise I've gained will have a lasting impact on my future endeavors, and I'm thankful for the support and guidance I've received along the way.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I wouldn't change anything, but I would start doing certain things from the beginning that I ended up doing later.

Too perfect

KAUST is a unique place and an excellent place for students environment. Most of the experiments for any field can be made there; however, many administrative issues occur. There is no well-made plan structure, and a lack of time lapses in training equipment, maintenance equipment, IT accounts, social activities, etc. In some cases, there is a high uncertainty ratio and slow procedures. I needed to wait almost 3 weeks to have an email account, one mount for having one equipment training, and I spent six mounts there where some equipment did not work correctly because of maintenance or updates.

Anyway, wherever I go, I highly recommend joining KAUST to improve the research field in Saudi Arabia

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don't be afraid of the media's stereotypes about the Middle East. Saudi it is just a great place to be; it is super calm. Foreign girls can be their own in a certain way; it is essential to be respectful and open-minded.

Unforgettable, and no regrets

This internship is one-of-a-kind. Never in my life would I have expected to take up an internship that would provide me with such unique experiences. I made friends and travelled with them during the Taif Rose Festival, AlUla Skies Festival, and I am looking forward to some of the VSRP-organized trips to Riyadh as well. Work-wise, the labs here offer a wide range of equipment suited for research needs. It was fruitful to learn more about research, doing some reflection about my future goals with like-minded people, as well as what KAUST has to offer.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Find out about public holidays, so that you can travel during them!
Pros
  • Ease of travel to Europe (Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest), if you want a short getaway to somewhere cooler during summer.
Cons
  • Hot during summer. Heard lots of complains about the weather. Maybe you can consider doing the VSRP in October to May, when it is cooler~

Best place for practical knowdledge

KAUST offers incredible laboratory base, with equipment like almost nowhere else around the world. Best part of all is that as a student you can operate and work with all of the machines after passing the required trainings. This gives you one in a kind practical experience and possibility to better yourself tremendously.

Apart from work, the campus life is incredibly beautiful with great accommodation, places for leisure and all kinds of sport.

The hospitality of the people here is incredible and you get to meet best of the best scientists from all around the world.

The best internship I have attended

The Visiting Student Research Program is like no other internship I have attended before, I got the experience to work in a fascinating project of my interest while developing in an international environment. King Abdullah University of Science and Technology(KAUST) is a great university that facilitates the stay to many international students so they can only focus in their research and not worry about anything else. This program has allowed me to adquire new skills that will help me develop as a scientist in the near future.

KAUST experience

To be honest this was one of the best experiences of my life so far, I met amazing people from different backgrounds, is a very well educated environment and you can learn so much from everyone and every interaction. In my personal experience, I had some issues with my Principal investigator, she didnt have a plan for me and wouldn't communicate either so it was difficult. But I had a direct supervisor who did everything in his power to help me learn as much as I could while I was there. KAUST provides the best environment for learning, and experiencing new things, is the safest place I've ever been and facilitates everything for personal and academic growth like laboratories and state of the art facilities to different courses and spaces to learn like language courses, art spaces and sport centers. I highly recommend this experience, I would encourage people to go, my only advice is to carefully look for a project you're interested in and try to contact someone from the laboratory before going so you have more information before arriving.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
This was my first time leaving my country which came with many new challenges that I thought would be easy beforehand, so when I first arrived I felt really alone, lost, didn't know hoe things worked, and got really overwhelmed by the change and the new things. If this is your case, I would tell you to be patient with you and take your time to adapt, things will get better, you will make friends and understand how the new things work, take your time and enjoy the process. Meanwhile try to stay connected to people from your friends and family, be open to invitations and explore, KAUST is a very safe place so you can walk around and explore and nothing will happen to you.
Pros
  • People
  • New cultures
  • Safety
Cons
  • It depends on your lab
  • the amex card given to VSRP has a lot of limitations, and often fails or is not accepted even at campus
