Why did you choose this program?
I wanted to learn Spanish in a natural and enjoyable way, especially for travel. I wasn’t looking for a classroom, I wanted something more immersive. When I found out about SHIP with Spanish Express, I loved the idea of learning directly in the teacher’s home. The Cádiz location really stood out to me too, because it’s a beautiful area with so much culture and history.
What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?
Once I booked the Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP), everything was really easy. Spanish Express helped me with all the learning arrangements, Óscar prepared the lessons, the accommodation, and even took care of the meals. I only had to organise my flights to Spain. Everything else was taken care of and well-planned.
What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?
My advice is to go into the programme with an open mind and be prepared to speak Spanish from the very first day. Even if your level is basic, using the language in real conversations is the most effective way to improve. Óscar was extremely patient, supportive, and encouraging, which made it easier to gain confidence. By the end of the week, I was surprised by how much I could understand and how comfortable I felt communicating in Spanish.
What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?
My mornings started with lessons at Óscar’s home. We’d go over vocabulary, basic grammar, and lots of speaking practice. In the afternoons, we’d go for walks, explore places nearby, or even cook and chat together in Spanish. It was a nice balance between structured learning and relaxed conversation. I really enjoyed the whole week's routine.
Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?
Before starting the programme, I was nervous about not understanding much Spanish or being able to speak confidently. However, Óscar quickly put me at ease by speaking clearly and using simple, everyday phrases that were easy to follow. His patient and encouraging approach helped me build confidence step by step. I soon realised that I did not need to be perfect to communicate effectively. All I needed was the willingness to try, make mistakes, and keep practicing in real situations.
What moment made you realise your Spanish was improving?
One evening, while walking through Cádiz, I found myself ordering food, asking questions, and chatting naturally without translating everything in my head. It felt effortless and exciting. That moment made me realise the immersion was working, and Spanish was starting to feel natural rather than something I had to think about constantly.
