Why did you choose this program?
My partner and I chose the Two-Week Spanish Homestay Immersion Program in Menorca because we wanted a focused and meaningful way to improve our Spanish together. Living in the teacher’s home offered full immersion without a classroom feel, which made learning feel practical rather than academic. We were also drawn to the calm pace and personalised approach, which suited us as a couple looking for a rewarding shared experience. From the very beginning, Mónica, our host teacher in Ciutadella and the director of Spanish Express, made us feel completely at ease with her warmth, constant smile, and welcoming personality.
What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?
The program provider took care of the teaching and the homestay experience, which made everything feel smooth and well organised once we arrived. Living in the teacher’s home created constant exposure to Spanish in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Mónica’s natural way of including us in daily conversations meant we were learning Spanish without even realising it. Her sense of humour and contagious laugh created a relaxed atmosphere where making mistakes never felt intimidating. We organised our own travel, but once there, everything related to learning and daily life felt well supported.
What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?
Be open to using Spanish as much as possible throughout the day. Because the immersion happens naturally at home and during outings, the more you engage, the more confident you’ll become. Having a host teacher like Mónica, who is endlessly patient, encouraging, and genuinely joyful, makes it easy to relax and enjoy the learning process. This program is ideal if you want learning to feel relaxed and meaningful rather than rushed or academic.
What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?
Each day combined language learning with cultural exploration. Living in the teacher’s home meant Spanish was part of everyday life, and learning continued beyond formal study time. Mónica has a wonderful way of turning everyday moments into learning opportunities, so Spanish becomes part of your routine without ever feeling forced. Cultural visits were an important part of the experience, including time spent in Ciutadella old town, visits to the Museo Numa and the Naveta des Tudons, and walks along sections of the Camí de Cavalls. These outings gave us plenty of opportunities to practise Spanish in real situations.
Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?
Our main concern was whether we would feel comfortable using Spanish consistently in everyday situations. However, the calm pace of the program and the supportive homestay environment made it easy to practise without pressure. Mónica’s warmth, humour, and constant encouragement helped us overcome our initial hesitation, making Spanish feel natural rather than stressful. Over time, Spanish started to feel more natural, and by the end of the program, we felt much more confident having everyday conversations.
What was the most meaningful part of learning Spanish as a couple during your homestay experience?
Sharing the learning journey with my partner made the experience more motivating and enjoyable. We supported each other, practised Spanish together throughout the day, and gained confidence at the same pace. It strengthened both our language skills and our shared experience abroad.
