About Program

As one of the oldest Spanish schools in Antigua, Don Pedro has discovered the ways to help students achieve better fluency as quickly as possible. We believe studying six hours a day with two teachers helps students cover both grammar and conversation. Because we want every student to meet their own goals, we allow them to create their own program. Some students choose to focus on Spanish for traveling, while others are preparing to move to a Spanish speaking country. Through our immersion style programs we believe that in six weeks you'll be able to understand the average Spanish person and participate in conversations on the street! To help with practical speaking we also organize a wide range of activities and encourage students to stay with host families.

Don Pedro over Skype

I've had a great experience practicing my Spanish with my tutor Maby. She is patient and engaged and has been such a great asset as I complete my AP class at school. Classes over skype are active and fun. Maby gives me feedback on presentations and short essays, and she always goes over everything with me word for word. If I don't understand something, she is great at rephrasing it with other Spanish words that I already know. We begin every class with a friendly conversation- about our lives and about the world. It is a great way to practice practical speaking skills. Maby is also incredibly flexible with her schedule and very accommodating. She is very patient and friendly, and it has been wonderful having classes with her.

Great teaching online

I have been learning Spanish online with Heidy since the summer and have really enjoyed my lessons. I took my family to Antigua for in person lessons a few years ago and decided to try and start again at home during lockdown.

The lessons are as hard as I want to make them. I am not a good student and heidy is very patient with me and we have a lot of fun learning about each other’s lives. I really want to be able to use Spanish in my everyday life and the conversations we have are really topical and the vocabulary I learn is really useful and applicable. Heidy is patient and explains the grammar very well. As I focus on speaking, there is little writing - which is fine with me. I have not done any reading yet, but again, my main objective is to be understood in speaking. I think the teaching is very flexible to what interests you. The teacher is very understanding and flexible if I have a timing conflict. I would highly recommend this school for online lessons and my daughter who is a High School Senior, is also having lessons to help with AP Spanish practice.

Love studying Spanish with Don Pedro de Alvarado online

I attended the Don Pedro de Alvarado school in person with my family, including my two sons ages 16 and 13, for 2 weeks in August 2019. Antigua was a wonderful city with beautiful views, shops and great restaurants. We loved the school much that my husband and I started studying Spanish with the school online upon our return from the States. I have been Skyping with a wonderful teacher, Betty, once a week for nearly a year. I have learned a lot and would highly recommend the school both in person and online.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
My family and I climbed the Pacaya Volcano which was an amazing experience. It is a short trip from Antigua and well worth it!

In person in Antigua, Guatemala, and subsequently using Skype

I had 15 days of in-person, one-on-one instruction in Antigua in 2018. I found Don Pedro's program to be excellent. Both of my teachers, Mary and Cecilia, were great teachers: patient and tolerant of my many mistakes.
In 2020 I've been unable to travel, so I signed up for Skype lessons with Don Pedro. They have also worked out very well, and I have been able to maintain some degree of fluency while stuck at home. My Skype teacher is Maby Armira, and she is excellent as well. I figure one hour of Skype is roughly equivalent to 30 minutes of in-person instruction. Excellent value for the money!

Don Alvarado Skype lessons

I’ve been having Skype lessons with Letty during Covid. I was worried when I first started as I hadn’t been to a Spanish class for 6 months. Letty immediately put me at ease! She is very patient but at the same time encouraging and I was soon in basic conversation with her. I am having two conversation lessons every week. We don’t spend much time on grammar but Letty explains anything I don’t understand by typing Spanish in chat and I can read up later. I am really pleased with the progress I am making with my conversation and can recommend Skype with Letty. I’’m hoping to go to Guatemala and have lessons with her in person!

Fabulous program both in-person and virtually!

I have both been to the school in person and have been doing Skype calls with a teacher (Letty) from the school all throughout Covid to keep up my Spanish. The school is beautiful and very typically Guatemalan, and the Spanish is taught in a very easy to learn, non-intimidating way because you are mostly just chatting and having conversations with the maestras, who are all SO kind and easy to get along with. My whole family went to the school with me, and my brother and dad went back individually, that is how much we loved this school! My brother was 16 and went by himself living there for a month and really enjoyed it.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do the option with as many hours of Spanish lessons in the day as you can, you will be amazed at how much you can absorb in an immersion environment.
