London Internship through AES

My name is Amaya Gallivan, and I am a dedicated college student currently enrolled at Liberty University, where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with a cognate in Data Networking and Security as well as a minor in Graphic Design. During the months of September-October, I interned for an artificial intelligence startup know as Move.ai. For two months, I lived in London, England working at their headquarters as a Solutions Engineering Intern supporting their information security and helping with data infrastructure projects. Move.ai is a private software development company that specializes in motion capture, artificial intelligence, computer vision, extended reality, augmented reality, and virtual production. My internship at Move.ai provided me with invaluable hands-on experience in the field of artificial intelligence. I had the privilege of working alongside a talented and diverse group of professionals who shared their knowledge and expertise generously. This exposure allowed me to deepen my understanding of AI technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, among others. I truly felt like a valued member of the team, and I am grateful for the mentorship I received. My internship at Move.ai was an immensely beneficial experience that has left a lasting impact on my personal and professional development. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I had and the knowledge I gained during my time at Move.ai.

My time in London was nothing short of amazing. From the moment I set foot in this vibrant city, I was captivated by its rich history and modern energy. Exploring iconic landmarks like the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and Big Ben left me in awe of the city's grandeur and cultural significance. One of the highlights of my time in London was experiencing its charming neighborhoods, each with its own unique character. From Camden Market's eclectic mix of shops and street food stalls to the serene beauty of Greenwich and its historic observatory offered a peaceful atmosphere from the city's hustle and bustle. Furthermore, Notting Hill's colorful houses and the vibrant Portobello Market filled my days with bliss. Lastly, Hyde Park's vast green spaces and Kensington's elegant streets provided a serene escape, perfect for long walks and picnics. Each day was a new adventure, and I left London with cherished memories and a profound appreciation for this extraordinary city.

London Fall 2015 Internship Program

Anglo Educational Experiences has provided a great experience for my semester abroad. I couldn't have asked for a more supportive group. Struggling with homesickness and the many questions I had, I knew that I could always go to the Anglo group. They were very well prepared for the most part and were professional with interactions.

What would you improve about this program?
The housing for this program could be greatly improved. Although the location was excellent, living standards and basic needs were not met. ISH housing was tight and disgusting.

I would also like to say that some parts of the internship such as the environment and the work involved were not advertised well. There should be more of a conversation between interns and Anglo about the work they will be doing as well as what they can expect to get for conditions.
Response from AES

Hi Emily
Thank you for taking the time to review the AES London Semester Program. We’re glad that you enjoyed your internship and your time in London.
The housing for your programme was arranged directly by your university and was not provided by AES, so unfortunately we can’t address your issues.
The majority of our interns have a skype/telephone interview with their placement which gives students the opportunity to discuss the exact details of the internship, what the work environment is like etc. Once the placement is confirmed AES sends details of the company and students are able to contact the company directly. After the initial call with AES, if students have any questions about any aspect of their programme the AES staff are always on hand to answer them. We will certainly take on board your comments.
I hope you have a safe flight home.

Experience of a Lifetime

I participated in the program in 2003, and it has had a significant impact on my career and my life. I was placed in an internship with the Liberal Democrats Parliamentary Press Office. Everyone was incredibly warm and welcoming, and they strove to give me an incredibly memorable experience. They invited me to a variety of meetings, social events, and conferences. I was given unique research and writing tasks. All of this gave me great insight into the world of politics--a world in which I thought I wanted to pursue a career. Instead, I realized that my passion was actually more in the policy arena rather than the actual politics, and I shifted my career path. Without this internship experience and the exposure I had to such a variety of activities, I am not sure if I would have ended up where I am today.

What would you improve about this program?
I am unsure of how the program has changed since 2003 (over 10 years ago!) but the only part that I wish had been different was that I wish there had been more people in my program. The year I went, there were only 2 of us, and we did not live together. I had a couple of friends on study abroad in London so that helped, but it could get a bit lonely in the evenings, especially being so far away from friends and family.

Interview

What is your favorite travel memory?

During my gap year I travelled around the world with my best friend, and we visited Fiji. It was the most stunning island, and we did a day trip snorkelling in the middle of the ocean, it was so surreal.

After we returned, we booked the exact same excursion for the later in the week and it didn't disappoint. The most perfect day which I will never forget!

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Working with AES has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally over the many years I have been here.

I started at AES as an administrator and have since grown to head of department, which has been a tremendous learning curve, which I couldn't have done without the support from the AES team.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

We often hear stories from students about their careers, and how their time in London influenced the rest of their lives and decisions they made going forward. However, I love love, and we once had a student meet their future husband on their semester abroad and he proposed in Sky Gardens at the top of the Walkie Talkie (an iconic building in London)!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would love to do the AES London Semester or Summer Session, as it allows you to fully emerge into life as a Londoner, while still having the support and guidance of AES so you are not dropped in the deep end. There is also a lot of free time to explore the city, and arranged excursions allowing you to meet other people.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

We always say that AES is unique because we are only based in London, allowing us to be London specialist, as opposed to generalists of many locations. Having this focus allows us to offer personal touches and recommendations to every programme we develop. The team is very passionate about this and has many years of experience doing so.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Flexibility. This can be both our strength and weakness, as some partners want a programme to be straightforward and selected out of a brochure. However, we offer a huge amount of flexibility and tailor make every programme we deliver, ensuring the experiences we are offering are meaningful and relevant to each partner/student.
