Professional Service

I was looking for a program that would allow my son to achieve fast learning in a comfortable environment. This is first time he's been travelling on his own, so comfort was a big factor. I was very pleased with the way the staff answered all of my questions in my emails within a few days at most. I had a lot of questions, and each was answered in a professional, timely way. I think the service is professional, timely and safe. I was really reassured to be able to actually talk to the staff over the phone, since emails only go far in satisfying a customer. I felt more confident about choosing Next step China when I could actually hear the voice of those who would be talking to my son for his 3- month stay.

Worth it!

NSC exceeded my expectations. The fact that they cared very much about their participants assured me that choosing them over their competitors was worth it. I was impressed - I had to leave China earlier than my expected date, so they added an extra tutor to make sure I don't lose my hours. Despite that, they created the program so that I did not get too tired and over-stress myself by the end of the day

One on one tutoring program

I decided to study Mandarin in China so I could improve my speaking--I don’t get to practice speaking too much in class and school, mainly reading and writing. I wanted to come to China and be able to speak with locals. I picked Next Step China based on the cost. I showed my Chinese teacher back home, and she was excited about the product. She was saying, “This is amazing! Hands down, you have to do this, no matter if you get credit for it or not”. Next Step China certainly exceeded my expectations because I got a lot of studying done, but I also got to have a lot of fun, too.

Tutoring Program

I think that the best way to learn a language is going to a country where it is spoken. In my short stay I improved my listening comprehension and my spoken Chinese. NSC’s tutoring program was an intensive one. It was divided in two parts per day with two different teachers that helped me constantly in my Chinese learning. It felt as a real immersion in the Chinese language, which was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Everything was very good, NSC took care of all my needs and did more than I expected.

Staff Interviews

These are in-depth Q&A sessions with program leaders.

What position do you hold at NSC? What has been your career path so far?

Hi Everyone! I am the CEO or Chief Everything Officer for Next Step China. Truth is, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would move to China, speak Chinese and start a business in China. After graduation, I worked for nearly 4 years at a hedge fund as a stock and bond analyst, and then in 2007, I decided to quit my job and do something completely different with my life. Friends and family suggested I should travel or get an MBA, but I decided learning Chinese and moving there for a bit was a better use of my savings and time. After a few months I was convinced that China was THE place to be and starting a business was the next step, hence the name: Next Step China. :)

Did YOU study abroad? If so, where did you go and what inspired you to go?!

I never studied abroad in college but actually was very lucky to have traveled since I was a kid, since my mom is from Spain or more specifically, the Tenerife, Canary Islands. So, after studying and working in Miami for over 25 years I was dying to get out and do something different or "crazy" and picked one of the furthest destinations from home!

What does the future hold for NSC - any new programs to share?

Next Step China is always working on improving and/or creating new products and services. We will actually be releasing a new website and products within the next 6 months so STAY TUNED!

What about the future of the industry? How do you think study abroad and international education will change over the next 10 years?

I think more and more people will be choosing to study abroad rather than study in their home country. I am talking about Americans deciding a different country to do their entire 4 year degree. With the costs of education rising in the USA and the quality stagnant I think a lot of parents and students will look at different alternatives and studying in China would definitely be at the top of the list.

Which study abroad destination is most underrated? Conversely, which is most overrated?

Honestly, since I have only done one "study abroad" program I really don't know which is the most under/over rated. I truly think every country has its unique beauty and experiences that will impact that student for a lifetime. The act of going abroad is a huge step in personal growth and development regardless of destination.
