Yes, I recommend this program

My daughter Zoë attended the Warriors Schools Programme. She suffers with anxiety and is unsure in new surroundings and situations. This programme was chosen in the hope that she would be able to face and overcome some of her fears during the week.

In her own words to us when she came home "Warriors was hands down one of the best things I have ever done and I think it's fair to say that many lessons were learnt whilst I was away. Thank you for always supporting me when I am doing things outside my comfort zone. I am extraordinarily lucky to have been given this opportunity."

During the week the kids were tested in all kinds of ways but always with amazing staff supporting them. An incredible program which helps the kids grow in many ways.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take the bull by the horns and jump into this experience.

The warriors trip was by far one of the best weeks of my life, I saw so much in one week and every day I did a new thing that I had never done before. I would highly recommend it to anyone even considering going on Warriors, as it was truly the best thing I have ever done. I met new people and become strong friends through all the activities and I wish it was longer, I was not ready to leave at the end of the week !! I overcame fears like skydiving and felt so relaxed and safe through the whole process that I wanted to go again and again as I enjoyed it so much, similar to doing bridge swing activities and also abseiling. I saw so many new parts of the world and it really opened my eyes. A trip I will never ever ever forget!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the most and take advantage of everything offered on the trip!

My daughter Olivia had the most incredible time with Warriors, thank you so much. She struggled to say what particular thing she loved most because she did so much and loved it all. On balance she decided that it was the skydiving but it was obviously an action packed week. Other highlights were the big swing, the wildlife including Jessica the hippopotamus, the water slide, the trekking, the cooking and the visit to the orphanage. The days were full of activities making it the most memorable of trips.
Thank you to all at Warriors for making it a brilliant trip. She returned home for some much needed rest.

Good day Warrior Team

Duardu just finished his first Warrior Quest. It was also the longest he has been away from home. As parents we were a bit nervous as to how he will cope with this new adventure.

Through his school years we never thought that he will choose the “adventure road” as his future as he never showed any interest in the outdoor life and I must say when he start mentioning this career choice we were a bit sceptical.

He joined Warriors and from the first phone call we had, after the Toltec course, we have noticed a huge change in him, and that was just over the phone.

Then he came home on Friday. I just could not believe the change in attitude, his excitement and just all over positivity!!

We always knew Duardu had it in him to soar in life and for me as mother, the emotional side of any person is far more important than academics or being in “first” place.

We followed all your webisodes and one of the things we have noticed, besides every one having an absolute blast😜, is the way the team really carried the students with positive talk and constantly guiding them!

So the reason for this email is to say thank you! Thank you for the way you treated Duardu, thank you for guiding him, thank you for your positive input in his life this past 7 weeks.

I am sure there were more than a few difficult moments BUT (and it depends where you put your BUT) there were so many awesome moments!

There is truly not one negative comment from Duardu regarding this quest. When he talks about all the moments, hikes, ups, downs, the running, the people, the cycling, he relays it with a very wide smile that comes from within, and for that we will be forever grateful!

He cannot wait to return for the Spring Quest. And we as parents will let him go with pride and with the certainty that he is in the more than capable hands of an awesome team with a passion, that is very visible, for young people!

Good luck to you all

Why did you choose this program?

For me, The Warrior Academy Gap Year Program suited me and exactly what I needed. It was the perfect balance of academic investments as well as focusing on fitness, self-development and being designed to push people outside of their comfort zone.

I had previously met the owners and facilitators on RYLA camps whilst volunteering, and was completely blown away by their love of life. Their attitudes and with a mindset of 'No adventure is too big and no person is too small'. Deep down I feel like The Warriors Academy actually chose me.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

So the base camp provides you with all your camping gear such as tents and sleeping bags, pots and plate, cups and head torches if need be. You can request bicycles and gear equipment; they provide bedding and laundry services. All of this goes on a 'rent by the quest or term'. Or you are more than welcome to bring all of your own equipment too.

Everything is always taken care of and thought of down to the last detail of what you will need to make your stay comfortable. The only things you need to bring yourself or get before you get to base Camp is your own Toiletries, clothes, and a few minor luxurious items, such as energy juices or health bars.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Go with the flow. If they say no technology and sleep early, do so. The entire Gap Year is designed by professionals to help you reach your utmost potential. It's based on a lovely environment on the side of a mountain. Live in the moments. Open your eyes to see beyond what's in front of you.

I didn't want to know anything prior. The way I learned and got submerged into the program was perfect. We all learned the rules and lessons; we all learned to grow and show support together. If anything... Make sure if you're from another country to get your own SIM card here so you can contact family when you are allowed technology! That could help.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Most days we would wake up at 6 or 6:30 to go for the morning run or cycle! Then it's up to the barn for breakfast, chill time for a bit. Then either we would be briefed on our next trip and have a team game plan of what to pack and then go shopping for all those items... Or we would have lessons and team building on the property where we would go get changed into what was needed and meet either at the tree for tree climbing or at the barn again for yoga lessons or lessons for self-development by Rene.

Each day has some similarities. However, each day is different, more exciting and teaches you something different. Every day, you will find some sort of exercise, except if we just completed a race, the next day would be rest day with a bit of yoga for the muscles. Good healthy food. And lots of long bus rides through the beautiful country.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was not being able to fit in with the crowd of strangers. The leaders at the camp made it very easy for everyone to get along. And we all had a level of understanding that each of us was on the gap year to better ourselves and find ourselves. So after a few weeks, we all got very comfortable with the idea of 'new is okay'. My views changed when I started to accept growth and started to live in my courage zone.

What was your favorite adventure?

My favorite adventure was breaking my fears of heights with sky diving, bungee jumping, cliff diving and even making it onto the top of the bunk beds in the cabins. Everything down to the small things like the bus rides was an adventure. By us who live here being able to show foreigners our lands and our foods.... Our home became their homes. And the adventure of being life came to us all.

Staff Interviews

These are in-depth Q&A sessions with program leaders.

Charles joined Warriors Academy in 2016 as our Training Director. He heads up all our training portfolios and in particular our Multi Activity Instructor training program.

What is your favorite travel memory?

Sitting on top of the Central Drakensberg escarpment, enjoying the sun rise over Cathkin Peak and watching a Cape Vulture spring past at eye level. I was on a four day hike with a group of students and took the time to just sit down and enjoy the day rolling out as the sun joined the day. There is no greater humbler feeling than being in the presence of such a beautiful view.

How have you changed since working for your current company?

Warriors Academy has afforded me the opportunity to pursue a life long ambition, which has in turn given me a lot more self confidence as I see my dream attaining reality. I have become far more goal orientated and have a greater sense of self. I am more in tune with where I am at, and am ok with that.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Warriors Academy had such an impact on her, that it changed her life forever. She came from an impoverished background with very little, if any, support and resources. Whilst on our program, she realized both her potential and how limitless our boundaries are, and is now both a successful athlete and career person.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would choose the MAI program as this is a unique course in South Africa. The training is intense and provides a very wide foundation for someone who intends to continue in the Adventure Industry. The facilitators are all professionals, sought out for their expertise in their respective fields with a lot of experience.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

Warriors Academy is a "people centered" company whose goal is to grow young people, facilitating their walk to a great sense of self awareness and confidence. I am especially proud of my team at each and every graduation ceremony when we get to realize just how much each student has grown over the time that they are with us.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

A successful company not only produces a good product, but lives by it themselves. Whatever they produce is at the heart of their existence and they invest all their time, effort and resources in continually ensuring that they are the very best at which they do. A forward thinking company is always going to be successful.
