Yes, I recommend this program

I took part in the Warrior Leadership Challenge in December 2019, it was a great experience where I got the opportunity to expand my knowledge and personal growth. To push my own limits and question my own integrity. I made new friends and met great people, wonderful leaders who made this week much more than I thought possible. I can recommend it to any young person, looking for a challenge and a chance to experience South Africa in a different way.

In this week's challenge, we got to explore outdoor adventures which included climbing a tree of over 15 meters in height, jumping from a bridge (with proper safety attire!), and for the not-faint hearted a massive Bridge Swing in the beautiful Mpumalanga province. We met elephants and kissed a hippopotamus (yes, we did!) did tribal dancing while visiting a local village. There is so much more than just these exciting challenges - morning yoga where you get to clean your thoughts and relax and fun team building where we had to prepare our evening meals. Truly something to experience for yourself!

My brother did the gap course in 2019 and grew so much as a person and learnt so many life skills. I’d recommend it to any young person who hasn’t made their career mind up. It is a truly excellent program. Thank you Warriors for all you do. I don’t have 500 characters to add. So if I could amend what I’ve said I would. I’m just trying to make 500 characters here. But anyway Warriors is the best way forward for the younger generation. All the best to all of you going forward. You have changed my brothers life.

every day Warriors meet and overcome challenges of a physical, psychological and spiritual nature. The team spirit and superb accompaniment means that there is no sense of destructive competition, but that each person continually strives to better themself. the experience as a whole builds individual confidence and self esteem, as well as a strong ethic of team work .

this programme is ideal for young people and those who have had little exposure to nature outdoor activities. It will be an unforgettable experience; I can't recommend it highly enough!

What would you improve about this program?
it's difficult to think how to improve this remarkable experience

My journey with The Warriors Academy has taken me in a complete 360. I started my journey 4 years ago today, as a bright young woman with absolutely no idea what I wanted to do, but all I knew is that I had a hunger and a thirst for adventure. My life circle has lead me from doing to Gap Year myself to studying in Cape Town and getting my advanced diploma in Food and Wine as a chef, to now my path leading me back to Warriors as a facilitator who assists in running both the Gap Year as well as The MAI (second year option). There is something about the Warriors Academy that makes base camp, the people you meet and the places you go feel like home. A sense of community is built, trust in strangers is found and furthermore you discover a part of yourself that you never knew existed. Everyday is an opportunity to grow, to invest and to find a new adventure to make a new memory. And from me to you, if you ever need something or someone in this lonely world, we here at Warriors Academy will not only be here for you leading and facilitating you into a better stronger person: who believes in themselves but we will welcome you into our international Warriors family with open arms!

What was your funniest moment?
Everyday had something new and exiting! Being surrounded by a bunch of young adults that are alive is extremely contagious... And in an environment which really encourages you to be 100% yourself!

Challenging...Oh yes!
Worth it?...Most definitely!
This program has changed my life, I was in a very bad space with not much hope for my future before joining Warriors Academy. Now I stand tall with a world of opportunities and a beautiful new outlook on my life and my future.
I have gained the tools that I was so despreratly in need of.
I was guided and driven through every obstical by an incredible team of passionate, caring and knowledgeable facilitators and instructors who's mission is to help their students grow and turn into well rounded, motivated and powerful individuals!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
When given an opportunity...grab it with both hands and don't let go till you have grown from it! It took me way too long to acknowledge the beauty and advantages of using every opportunity I was offered and i ended up missing out on quite a few life changing moments because of this, if I could do it all again I would go head first into everything I was offered so please please do the same!

Lindy Odendaal

Lindy is currently a full time student at the University of the Nort-West. She will be completing her Bachelor of commerce (BCom) honours Degree in Tourism managemet in 2020.

Why did you choose this program?

This program had such a variety of opportunities and experiences to offer. Learning a variety of different skills and the opportunity to acquire knowledge in fields otherwise not possible. The feedback was quick and the staff went out of their way to accommodate you in any way necessary.

It was by far the most appealing gap year program that I found online.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

As this program often accommodates international students, they are very organised in providing any necessary services. They have all the necessities at hand, and if something is needed, they can arrange for it or accommodate you in your needs.

The only thing you need to worry about is booking your flight. They do the rest.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

An opportunity such as this rarely rises and, if presented with the choice, you should definitely take it. Expand your horizons and experience new things, get out of your comfort zone and know that you will be surrounded by likeminded people who have a passion for living life to the fullest and using every opportunity they get.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Early mornings followed by adventures in the beautiful nature of magoebas kloof mountains surrounding you. Amazing food and great company. Planning and going on adventures such as hiking, river rafting, safaris and so much more adventurous activities. It's never a dull moment and you get to do it with great people.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Insecurities about myself that lead to social anxiety.

Warriors taught me to love my individuality and to embrace it any way that I wished. It taught me that most people are insecure but express themselves differently. I no longer struggle as much with Social anxiety as this amazing gap year and amazing people have taught me to love who I am and others will do the same.

Would you describe this as ons of the most memorable times of your life?

Definitely, every day I use a skill that I acquired at Warriors. I made lifelong friends. It was one of the most carefree times of my life and definitely put some drive back into my life by teaching me how to overcome tough situations and how to push on and take that extra step.

What is your favorite travel memory?

I had the privilege of hiking the Camino in Spain.

Walking for 40 days from France to Santiago and covering juts over 1000 Kms with a small backpack with a few selected items was an amazing and transformational experience. I did this walk with my wife and was joined by a friend for the last 10 days into Santiago.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Warriors has always been a dream job and being part of this journey has been an incredible experience and it most certainly forced me to grow and become a much more conscious human.

Each student has been a teacher for me, constantly challenging me to move out of my own personal comfort zone. I believe that this job has made me grow as a father as well as a husband.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I have so many stories to tell and it is difficult to single out any of these. One of our students completed two master's degrees after attending our gap year program and has told us that her success and work ethics were shaped during her gap year experience with us. I had the privilege to be asked by this student to officiate her marriage a few years later. I felt like a proud dad.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would most definitely suggest the full gap year program to any young adult either before, during or just after studies. This program has been developed for the last 17 years and I believe that it is one of the best investments any parent can do for their children, as it gives them an opportunity to grow their own emotional awareness and emotional maturity setting them up for all the challenges that life will inevitably throw at them.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I think that our team is made up of a diverse group of individuals, each with their own unique strengths. For me, the uniqueness in the team is that each of us has developed a strong mental attitude and each adds incredible value towards our common goals and mission.

We are all seriously passionate about the youth and about making a difference. It really is not just a job but rather more a sense of calling for each one of us.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Working very close as a team ensuring that we always have a win-win attitude when dealing with each other, our clients as well as our service providers. Integrity and passion for what we do is the cornerstone of our success.

Working in an environment where growth is part of everyday life and has become a habit is our success recipe.
