Opening up worlds virtually

EDU Africa put together a program for us that allowed our students to experience new worlds in ways that they never have, or even would have thought to. We asked them to shape discussions around the UN Sustainable Development Goals and then to have our students talk with students in several African countries. It was truly transformative. It was in some ways better than many faculty-led study abroad programs (those that are basically enhanced tourist trips) because we met such a variety of people and perspectives in small groups. Having personal invitations to visit those countries made our students even more eager to travel. The connections with individuals was incredibly enriching.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Try to disentangle yourself from your preconceptions. Be open and ready to think from different perspectives.

Very interesting range of perspectives that really deepened student understanding

This was an 'online' experience that was put together in a short timeframe by EDU Africa as students could not travel. It was very interesting and expansive, and had a great range of guests. Students really deepened their understanding, and I enjoyed hearing the different first person perspectives. We had such a great range of guest speakers, from city officials, to people living in different communities, and local academics and experts. Very good alternative to actual travel, and the students would love the opportunity to visit in real life.

EDU Africa

I work for Nottingham Trent University in the UK and we used EDU Africa to run two sessions for students during our annual Global Week celebration. These sessions were Environmental Justice and Global Legacies of Racial Justice. The sessions were fantastic and the students and staff (including me!) who participated got so much out of them. The speakers were inspiring and it was so interesting to hear their lived experiences. There was a lot to take away and reflect on in our own lives. Thank you EDU Africa!

What would you improve about this program?
Only that I wish we could have done it in person in Africa!

South Africa - Virtual Study Abroad

Our South Africa Virtual Study Abroad programs in spring of 2021 really excited our students and faculty. Not being able to travel abroad has been a challenge in our office so we pivoted to virtual programming. The 4 part series was extremely well attended and gained momentum and interest for the study abroad program the college will run for 2022. My personal favorite was the storytelling series and hearing from local South Africans about various topics. We cannot wait to duplicate these events this upcoming academic year!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Being able to speak with Nelson Mandela's prison guard was unique, powerful and impactful!

Transformative Learning with EDU Africa

EDU Africa created a custom, virtual-exchange program that had more participation than any other virtual international exchanges in 2021! The sessions were live, synchronous, and extremely engaging. We connected with South Africa on issues of culture, food, race, politics and student experiences. This virtual exchange opened the pipelines of interest for many students, who desire to fly to South Africa in the future. Central Piedmont looks forward to bringing these programs to more students, faculty and community-members next semester.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
While visiting Cape Town, I hiked up and down Table Mountain and was woefully unprepared.

Learned a ton working with EDU Africa as a grad student

I worked with this organization through my university for a Museum Education and Interpretation class as a graduate student. The entire experience was virtual (hence the neutral ratings for housing and experience-related things) and it was incredibly informative. The museum I personally worked with was the Robben Island Museum, but I also got a chance to learn about the museums other classmates were working with. Everything went incredibly smoothly and everyone was very nice. It definitely made me want to visit the museums in person whenever I get a chance!

Great medical rotation through EDU Africa!

This was my first international rotation and EDU Africa planned the trip so well. It was very organized with just the right amount of academics, culture and fun. We had support the entire trip with phone numbers and transportation was always scheduled for us. We also had a fun intro week with Swahili lessons, visits to the local markets and a brief introduction to Tanzania culture. We chose to have them organize our trip to Zanzibar for a weekend off and it was amazing! I couldn’t have planned the weekend getaway better myself. Thank you EDU Africa for the amazing experience.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Visiting the Maasia boma and sitting down with them for questions.

EDU Africa Tanzania Trip

This experience was wonderful and transformative! The itinerary was amazing and I loved the variety of experiences that we had. From the hospital to the beaches of Zanzibar everything was amazing! I felt like we were able to see so much and do so much within 5 weeks. Everything was very well organized and the staff was amazingly helpful. I always felt safe and well taken care of. I would love to come back one day to this beautiful country! This program is overall great from both an educational standpoint and a travel standpoint. Highly recommended!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve-racking moment was either assisting with a c-section during my time in the hospital, or being on safari and having baboons jump on our car.

Tanzania EDU Africa

This trip was absolutely incredible! I learned so much while working in the hospital, but EDU Africa also did a great job at making this trip memorable for us in other ways. They planned an incredible weekend in Zanzibar- from hotels to tours and everything in between. They also planned 3 safaris to round out the trip. I would highly recommend it. We were also able to travel early to hike Kilimanjaro, which was challenging but amazing. EDU Africa was very flexible about arranging extra transportation and accommodation.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come with an open mind, and be ready for a great experience!

Amazing experience in Tanzania

We had a 4-wk rotation in Tanzania and we had an amazing time. We spent two a week in orientation, 2.5 weeks working in women’s health at KCMC in Moshi, and reflections following that. Our program organized incredible cultural experiences for our free time - trip to Zanzibar, visiting the hot springs and waterfall in Moshi, 3 days of safari, and staying in a rented camp among a Maasai community. We were also able to come early and climb Kilimanjaro. We were do well-supported. Incredible experience

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come early if you can and research everything there is to do here. Staff were very helpful and accommodating when we told them what we wanted to do in our time here
