Brno in Summer is amazing! And the courses at MUNI are also great :-)

My two weeks in Brno were very well spent, and the organization by the International Office and academic staff at Masaryk University was on point.

The academic curriculum of the summer school Language, Culture, and Mind offered a detailed introduction to the theory and methods of Cultural and partly Cognitive Linguistics. The atmosphere in class was always productive and respectful, with just the right amount of challenge and summerly lightness. The group was the perfect mix from various disciplines, which made for very interesting contributions from varying perspectives.

The non-academic side was noticeably well thought through and organized. There was always something to do, with the possibility to opt out. The best part was to grab lunch or a coffee with my classmates and to chat about life and work in places from Turkey through Sweden to Taiwan. All of this in this amazing Central European city called Brno, which truly is a hidden gem, especially during summer.

On a very small downside, the Internet connection at the hotel was so bad that I had to do the work I had unfortunately brought from home either at the university or using a hotspot on my phone. I can also recommend finding a nice bar or restaurant and getting the work done there. There are so many nice places in Brno.

Also, the final party took place on a boat on a perfect summer day! I mean, come-on...

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Bring more comfortable shoes. The hills...
Pros
  • Beautiful city!!
  • Perfect organization
  • Affordable
Cons
  • WiFi at the hotel was bad
  • The beds and furniture at the hotel are also not the best

Life Changing!

As I embarked on this adventure, I wasn't sure how living in a new country would be. Thankfully, going to the Czech Republic exceeded my expectations in so many ways. Not only did I grow professionally, but I learned so many extra skills through the trips, activities, and classes I was able to go to. Getting to explore different cultures, try different foods, and meet students outside of my university at home was so exciting. The best part is realizing that all of these students are in the adventure with you, so I never felt alone. This experience changed how I view so many different things, and I am so grateful to have spent my summer in the Czech Republic!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-wracking moment for me was going out in BRNO and having to speak Czech, and interact with all of the local people. I was so nervous that I was going to stand out and annoy people because my Czech skills were not amazing. But, after grocery shopping, exploring the city, and meeting locals, I realized that I had no reason to be worried. The advisors from Masaryk were so helpful in recommending places, giving advice, and being friends. The local people are so kind and welcoming too! I am so glad I was able to step outside of my comfort zone for this program.
Pros
  • Communication
  • Adventure
  • Variety
Cons
  • Nerve-wracking
  • Overwhelming
  • Stressful

A memorable summer experience

This two-week action packed summer experience at the Summer School of Masaryk university was one of the most remarkable experiences in my life. I was taking a two-week course on 3D printing in Pharmaceutics and I learned quite a lot both in a practical and in a theoretical sense. The afternoon activities were also amazing, everything from town excursions in Brno to physical activities like dancing and sports. Not only I have widen my knowledge in 3D pharmaceutical printing, but also met new friends. I highly recommend it, you won't regret it.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would change nothing. All was perfect.
Pros
  • Learned more about 3D printing in pharmaceutics
  • Explored Czechia
  • Met new friends
Cons
  • I got sick

Summer School 2025

Attending the Summer School program on Methods of Forensic Analysis was an amazing experience!

From the very beginning, the information provided before the program started made it clear that it was carefully structured, taking into account transportation, accommodation, everyday life needs and safety rules. The supportive staff and their student-friendly approach genuinely made me feel comfortable and confident about my decision.

The daily schedule included lectures, laboratory sessions and group activities. Each day was different, keeping the program dynamic. The mornings usually focused on theoretical lectures, where basic concepts of forensic analysis and analytical chemistry were explained. After the theoretical lectures, we had laboratory work, which allowed us to see how the theory we learned could be used in real forensic scenarios.

The professors and laboratory staff were very welcoming and friendly. They were always available to clarify doubts and offer guidance during laboratory sessions.

Overall, this summer school is an excellent opportunity for students who want to deepen their knowledge in forensic analysis and gain hands-on experience in a well-structured environment. It offers much more than academic content as it provides a space where students can grow, connect with others, and gain confidence.

What was your funniest moment?
The funniest moment of the program was the first day, when we were given a challenge to explore the whole city and take funny pictures. Running around with people we had just met was definitely one of the highlights!
Pros
  • well-structured program
  • supportive staff
  • international environment

One-month Exchange Journey in Brno: Short and Surprising

I have just completed a one-month exchange program in Brno, Czech Republic. While the duration was short, the professional and personal growth I experienced was significant.

Brno proved to be an exceptional environment for academic focus. As a hub for technology and education in Central Europe, the city radiates an intellectual energy that is contagious. The facilities at the university were modern, and the opportunity to collaborate with international peers provided me with fresh perspectives that I will carry into my future studies/career.

Beyond the classroom, this month taught me the value of adaptability. Navigating a new culture and language—even for a short period—forces you to step out of your comfort zone. I was particularly impressed by the city's efficiency and the warmth of the local academic community, who went out of their way to ensure we had a productive stay.

I highly recommend Brno to anyone looking for an exchange destination that prioritizes education and innovation without the distractions of a massive tourist hub. It was a productive, enriching month that added real value to my academic journey.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I think I would try to reach out to the students from another countries more, because studying abroad is really a good chance to learn more people and have the cultural exchange.
Pros
  • Experienced many novel stuffs
  • Learn some of new friends
  • Gain more new knowledge which is very interesting
Cons
  • Didn't really get used to the food and living environment there
  • Kinda huge workload
  • Language difficulties

Adventures

I found it amazing that we had programs organised every afternoon. It really helped getting to know Czechian culture. :)
One of my favourite programs was the Czechian language class; we had a great teacher and also I am really into languages; I felt at home during that lesson. :D

The other favourite was the Saturday trip to the destiny we chose; I do not know the other options, but Kroměříž, where I was was simply mesmerising.

What I would change if I were you is accepting absolute beginners' application to the program. I was in the EU policy and security class and as a layman it was really hard for me. Or if you add this info to the class descriptions that beginners are welcome but they should expect intensive amount of new knowledge it will be fine, I think. :)

Otherwise I found everything really nice and dandy.

This summer school was a fantastic experience!

I loved it from the start. Everything was well organized and communicated, which made it easy to enjoy the course, while making new friends and building connections.

The summer school offers a good balance between academic work and being abroad. The classes only lasted a couple of hours, which gave me time to explore the city.

Overall, this summer school was a truly enriching experience! I would definitely recommend this program if you are looking for an inspiring and enjoyable learning experience.

  • Well organized
  • Fun activities

An Internship That Helped Me Grow Professionally and Personally

This program truly helped improve my CV because it gave me my first real experience in a professional work environment. At the beginning it was a challenge, because I didn’t know anything about the company, but that feeling only lasted for a short time. Once I started, I learned something new every day, both from my tasks and from my coworkers and supervisors.

The people were very kind, fun, and welcoming. They always tried to include me and make me feel part of the team. I also had great support during my internship, with guidance, activities, and the experience of sharing with other interns.

I especially loved meeting Michael and William from CzechMates. They are always willing to help and are very supportive. I also made many friends with whom I shared great adventures. This program is a great opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, meet new people, build new relationships, discover what you would like to work on in the future, and live unique experiences.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take this experience with an open mind and a positive attitude. At the beginning, everything may feel new and challenging, but don’t be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes—that’s how you learn. Get involved, connect with the people around you, and step out of your comfort zone. This program is not only about work experience, but also about personal growth, new friendships, and discovering what you really enjoy doing.

Masaryk University Research Lab Internship

This program was a great study abroad experience, especially for individuals seeking to pursue research and plan to study abroad. The Summer School team is amazing, they plan multiple different weekend trips to nearby cities with provided accommodation, tours, and activities. Additionally, they assist with your transition to living in Brno and plan multiple weekly evening activities to help you get to know the city. The research advisors are also extremely supportive, and most will allow you to make weekend travel plans. I got to visit over 10 countries during the 9-week program. I met some of my closest friends during the program, and we still keep in touch almost a year later. I highly recommend this program, both for the research and the number of things to do in Brno and the surrounding countries.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Brno is a great city to live in, but it's also really close to Vienna and Prague, which are huge travel hubs if you're looking to spend some time traveling. I would really recommend making friends with the people in the other internship groups and planning some fun weekend trips together! (or solo traveling, if that's more your style :) )

An Inclusive Summer School Experience at Masaryk University

My experience at the Summer School at Masaryk University in Brno was very positive, both academically and in terms of accessibility. The courses were dense, well structured, and very enriching. What I particularly appreciated was the balance between theory and practice: we first had theoretical lectures, followed by practical sessions, which really helped with understanding. The professors took the time to explain concepts clearly and made sure everyone was following. Being a small group also made the learning environment more supportive. The diversity of academic backgrounds (biology, medical and paramedical fields, from undergraduate to PhD level) made exchanges between students especially enriching.

As a disabled student (cognitive disabilities, autism, ME/CFS, MCAS, HSD, and wheelchair user), I felt very well supported throughout the program. Before my arrival, I had an interview to discuss my specific needs, followed by another meeting with the person who supported me during my stay. The process was smooth and not time-consuming. I benefited from timetable adjustments and academic accommodations such as enlarged font sizes and access to course materials. This made a real difference and allowed me to fully engage in the program.

Beyond the academic side, Brno is a wonderful city: beautiful, calm, and very well connected by public transport. Getting around is relatively easy, even as a wheelchair user, especially with some help. People are warm, polite, and always willing to help, and English is widely spoken.

Brno is also a queer/LGBTQ+ friendly city, and the university felt trans-friendly. As a non-binary trans person, I felt safe both in the city and within the university environment, which contributed greatly to my overall experience.

On a more practical note, food options are affordable and convenient. Breakfasts provided during the program were good and filling, and it is easy to find inexpensive food nearby, including local products. Supermarkets such as Billa, Albert, Tesco, and Lidl are good options for budget-friendly meals.

The only minor downsides were some steep streets, which can be challenging for wheelchair users, and somewhat unpredictable weather, but both were manageable. Overall, this was an inclusive, well-organized, and truly rewarding experience.
