Amazing experience for our daughter

Our daughter spent the first half of 2024 in the Seville Abroad program. We really liked the fact that this is a small program based entirely in the beautiful and safe city of Seville. The students and staff become like a close family. When our daughter was struggling with culture shock and home sickness, the staff was so kind and supportive, helping her to make adjustments and find the support she needed to work through the struggles and come away from the experience with a new sense of self and confidence. Her language skills and ability to face challenges and new environments have improved immensely, and we're so grateful she had this experience. As a parent I could not have asked for more!

Amazing experience in Seville

I spent one semester in Seville. I lived with a family in Triana. The food, architecture and culture were great. I loved Semana Santa and Feria! My family was caring and helped me throughout the semester. High school was very different from my experience in the United States but the people at Seville Abroad helped me adjust. I also appreciated the weekly Spanish lessons provided by Seville Abroad. The excursions planned by Seville Abroad were educational and fun. I will always remember my time in Seville.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Anchovies and condensed milk sandwich, a tapas at La Flor de Toranzo in Seville. Surprising and delicious!
Pros
  • Food
  • Walkability
  • Making new relationships with friends and family
Cons
  • Eating late at night was hard to get used to.
  • Gets really hot sometimes.

Amazing Experience

My year with Sevilla Abroad was amazing! The team at Sevilla Abroad was extremely helpful throughout the application process as well as supportive throughout my time there. It was an incredible adventure with challenges and obstacles that helped me grow as a person. I loved the food, the sights, the music, and the people! I especially enjoyed the excursions to other cities and countries! This experience left me with lifelong friends that I plan to visit in the future. I know that I am a more confident, independent, and cultured individual from having been through this experience.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
When I left, I was worried that I'd be homesick after a couple months. However, the Sevilla Abroad program and my fellow study abroad students helped me feel at home. They were my family away from home - we celebrated birthdays and Thanksgiving. They provided a space where we could all discuss any issues we faced.
Pros
  • I gained independence.
  • I gained confidence in myself.
  • I experienced so many things that others never will.
Cons
  • I was away from friends and family.
  • Taking classes in Spanish was challenging and required more studying.
  • I had to take extra classes that I missed once I returned to my home school.

Great Growth Experience

My daughter spent her sophomore year in Seville. Seville Abroad was well organized and responsive to her needs. The folks running the program and excellent and made struck the right balance between protection and growth and exploration. We felt confident that our daughter was in good hands. I think this was was transformational year for our daughter. She is ready to head of to college now, and she is just a junior! Her love of travel and language study has only grown. She is now close to fluent in Spanish, after having had only one year of Spanish in 9th grade in the US before having her Seville Abroad experience.

Seville Abroad

My year at seville abroad was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. It was at times very difficult as when I got there I had limited Spanish knowledge, however the program always had a good support system in place for any problems I had. I confidently feel now that my language skills have much improved and that I will have many friends in new countries. I have kept in great contact with a lot of people from spain and I have made lasting friendships with people in a different country. I would truly recommend this program to anyone who asks

An Exciting and Self-Reflective Experience

From the moment I signed up for Seville Abroad, the directors of the program were thorough in answering all of my parents' and my questions. When I arrived, I felt safe and taken care of by Pepa and the other staff, as well as my incredibly selected host family. I felt very well matched with the family I lived with; I clicked naturally into their family's lifestyle. Although the rules of the program are clearly and firmly laid out beforehand, they are very understanding and forgiving that it is you're new at this adventure and you will make mistakes, or some things will be harder for you. I think this program gives as much independence and freedom as is safe for high school age students. I found the excursions to be very exiting always as well, it was definitely one of my favorite things to travel internationally with my friends from the program! Overall, I learned so much about myself and the world on this trip- I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a rewarding, adventurous, and unique experience.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Use every opportunity you can to immerse yourself in the language and the culture! Even when it feels intimidating.

Best Semester Ever!

I studied in high school with Seville Abroad and truly had one of the greatest experiences of my life. Pepa, Chelo and Nicole are the kindest people and created the most welcoming place in a new environment. They were helpful and accommodating and made me feel very safe. Going to school was hard at first but became easier and eventually was fun. I made lifelong friends that I am already planning to go visit and I miss Seville so much! The excursions were a highlight and my host family was amazing! I can’t recommend this program enough!!

I learned so much about myself and had the best experience

Being part of Sevilla abroad you create long-lasting memories that you'll look back on forever. While there I discovered so much about myself and who I want to be. Like all experiences, I faced challenges, one being moving host families. This was a very hard time for me but having Pepa and Chelo there supporting me every step of the way was extremely helpful. During my time there I created long-lasting friendships with both Spaniards and the other study-abroad students. Before choosing Seville Abroad I did my research on all other study abroad programs but decided on this program because of how small it was. Pepa and Chelo make sure to know you well and support you. I couldn't have made a better decision. The relationships you make with the people there and Chelo and Pepa will be relationships that last forever.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If there is any advice I can give it is to be social. Talk to the kids in your classes and ask them what is going on that weekend, get to know them, and make as many friends as you can. Also, talk to the other kids in the program because they can give you advice about anything you need.
Pros
  • Build life long relationships
  • Traveling with the group and alone
  • Fully immerse in the Spanish culture
Cons
  • Depending on what school you go to it may not me easy

A year in Sevilla

My daughter spent a gap year in Sevilla during which she attended a public high school. Seville Abroad provided her with the opportunity to live abroad and experience a new culture with the security of having support nearby if she needed it. Her goal was to improve her Spanish and learn about a new culture. She did both of these and more. Sevilla Abroad offers tutoring, in country and out of country excursions, and opportunities to partake in local celebrations. The first two months were the hardest as she worked to improve her Spanish skills and make friends. She ended the year more confident, outgoing, with excellent Spanish skills and close friendships with Spanish and American friends. The decision to go abroad changed her life for the better and gave her experiences and new perspectives she would not have had without this opportunity. Given the option to do it again, we would most definitely do it all again.

Trimester Abroad in Spain

I had an unforgettable and amazing experience living and studying in Spain for my first trimester of my junior year of high school. Even though my level of Spanish was not high when I arrived in Spain, I was able to learn from the classes within my program and through my amazing host family. I feel that I was matched up to them and fit into their family very well. It was also very helpful at first because my host sister knew a lot of English and I was able to learn Spanish from her easily. I left with much more vocabulary and ability to understand the language than what I arrived with! In addition, I experienced personal growth in independence and maturity.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried ox tail in Cordoba, which I was unsure about at first, but it was delicious. Also, when our program took an excursion to pros, I tried escargot! The sauce was the most tasty part but the texture was interesting!
Pros
  • The learning of a new language.
  • Meeting lifelong friends who live all throughout America
  • Opening your eyes to different cultures and the diverse world.
Cons
  • The school system in Spain was difficult to get transcripts and records from.
  • It was difficult to choose classes and personalize a school schedule.
  • The restriction of curfew of midnight was difficult to abide by with the typical life in Spain.
