Think Pacific Virtual Internship Experience

I enjoyed every minute of my remote internship, and have learnt so much about the unique culture of Fiji, as well as analysing and researching their healthcare.

The first week was focused around learning about Fiji, eventually building up to the submission of a word report for the Fijian Ministry of Health's Wellness Fiji public health campaign. This was incredibly rewarding, and I hope the suggestions I documented are of use.

Bula to every at Think Pacific, especially the support from my fantastic mentor in the process!

Amazing virtual internship experience!

I learnt so much about Fiji over the last couple of months from incredible experts, Fiji nationals and past TP volunteers. It was a dream to learn about another culture and dive into an action project that will hopefully make a great impact for the small partner organisations with which we worked.
I loved being able to explore so many different internship fields and the wealth of resources about the Fijian culture and relevant skills for our action projects really opened my eyes to a whole range of experiences and opportunities I didn't realise were available to me.
I've feel so inspired and empowered knowing that you can up-skill and make a difference even from being in lock down in your own home. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this virtual internship opportunity and can't wait to visit Fiji myself in the future!

What would you improve about this program?
I would make the online platform more user friendly and simplify the portal for navigation

Think Pacific Virtual Internship

This think Pacific virtual internship was an invaluable experience for me! As someone who had wanted to go off travelling this year and eventually work in the NGO sector, working with think pacific provided me with experiences that I believe will benefit me greatly in my future. I learnt so much about the Fijian culture, I was able to design an action project for an amazing organisation in Fiji, I picked up many new skills and most importantly I had fun! Overall I would really recommend this programme to anyone who wants to learn about a really interesting new culture or just pick up some new skills

Think Pacific Virtual Internship

Learnt a lot about international development and Fijian organisations! My action project was to develop an events calendar for Duavata to highlight the various events many of us are organising and support with content creation – posters, social media content, blog articles etc. We had a lot of help from our mentors and connected with other attendees through Facebook group chats. Also, there were a variety of different topics, from NGO management, health, sports, international development, or business.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Stay updated with news and keep track of your research at all times

TP Virtual Internship

I took part in the virtual internship programme, as offered as a fantastic opportunity from my university. It was a really valuable experience as I had the chance to work with an organisation of my choice. This meant I could work on a project I was truly passionate about.
The TP team were amazing, they put on so many sessions for us interns to learn so much, from guest speakers, culture sessions and even weekly 'fun' sessions.
I would recommend this internship to anyone looking to gain such exposure

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Due to the current circumstances, the internship was undertaken virtually but for sure next time I would visit Fiji in person

Virtual Internship - Global Health

I thoroughly enjoyed this experience with Think Pacific! There was a huge range of different topics to explore and additionally lots of content on the culture and customs within Fiji. There was constant engagement with the team through Zoom calls, mentor meetings and virtual ‘coffees’ with other interns! Having the privilege to work with international organisations to build on my own self-development and professional skills was definitely a valuable experience I would recommend to anyone! The skills set stood out to me the most as there was a wide range of skills available to explore and learn about. Also hearing experiences from TP alumni was really interesting and made me want to go to Fiji and experience it for myself!!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
You can learn a lot about a country and their customs without having to travel to the other side of the world!

Brilliant experience

I loved taking part in this programme. It allowed me to immerse myself in a diverse culture, alongside meeting like minded people! I learned skills online that are invaluable- especially in these times.
While the virtual internship is online, it has sparked my interest in volunteering in Fiji when the time is right. Picking the organisation and action project was a highlight for me. It was amazing to see what Fiji needed, and knowing that you had the option to aid a project you passionately care for was a rewarding experience.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Pushing myself to speak to others doing the programme online and recording my presentation.

Fantastic insight into other cultures

A brilliant opportunity not just to work with local businesses and charities, but also to find out about other cultures, learn from them and offer them the chance to learn off your own experiences. There are a variety of different options for projects you can undertake, meaning all candidates can find a project that they would like to undertake, but also, you can make the project your own, mentors will help you, letting your know if it’s meeting the requirements, but on the whole, the business are willing to let you take the projects and make them your own.

Virtual Internship - 10/10 experience

On this Internship with Think Pacific I was able to create two action projects for the Psychiatric Survivors Association and Netball Fiji that could have a significant impact on the development of Fiji, the enjoyment of sports and the provision of mental health care in Fiji. I learnt so much about Fijian culture and lifestyle without even going to Fiji and I could not be more grateful to all of the TP staff who made that possible. I’ve loved every minute of it and I’m so proud at the work I have been able to produce.

What was your funniest moment?
Battling poor wifi and a noise of a loud leaf blowing machine whilst on a Zoom call with my mentor.

Can I do it again?

I loved doing the Think Pacific internship, the amount of information given before project really helped me understand Fijian culture. The support and guidance available meant that I was supported the whole way through and was given advice on my future goals. I did my internship on creating a volunteer programme for a charity which is researching and restoring the coral reefs in Fiji. I would really recommend this to anyone who is interested in international development or just trying to do their bit in the world.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could do it again I would do a project in something completely different to environment so I could learn about another area of Fijian culture.
