Spring 2023 Semester Abroad

What a fantastic experience! While there were some issues with Florence University of the Arts, the EdOdyssey program was nothing short of amazing. Stefano was an enormous help with any and everything, and our housing was in an amazing spot. Florence is a truly incredible city, and I wouldn't trade this semester for the world. Amazing people, amazing food, amazing city–what more could I ask for! Plenty of off the beaten path adventures and opportunities to travel internationally and domestically!

Pros
  • Amazing location
  • Welcoming people
  • Walkable city
Cons
  • Frustrating university administration

Amazing Experience

I had the best experience with EdOdessy! The program included trips to the alps and countryside where we got to learn more about the culture, and the academics were interesting without being too challenging (it was easy to travel on weekends). Everyone involved with the program was amazing and I can’t recommend it more! You can tell that it’s made with the students in mind and the school makes it possible to set up your own class schedule so you can have time off to explore the city. Overall it was an invaluable experience that I’ll remember for years to come!

I had an absolutely fantastic time in Florence through EdOdyssey. I attended classes at a university, learned about Dante and the history of Tuscany, traveled all over Italy with my friends, and even got special trips through the program. I can truly say I loved every minute of the experience - it's like nothing else. I was able to push myself out of my comfort zone surrounded by friends and excellent staff and professors and it has changed my life. I will forever be grateful for this experience and all those who made it possible.

Pros
  • Breath-taking sites
  • Friendly atmosphere
  • Always more to learn/do

Spring Mason-Led Florence Semester Experience

I had an amazing experience studying abroad and had an amazing group of individuals, especially Stefano Parenti from EOddysey, to guide and provide me with all answers and details I needed to maximize my experience. Studying abroad allowed me the opportunity to create memorable friendships and experiences. The staff at George Mason and EDoddysey really helped me navigate the difficult and sometimes isolating journey that takes place when one studies abroad especially for the first time. Traveling every weekend, hanging out with friends, taking amazing classes, and sightseeing almost everyday were the absolute best highlights of my trip and something I’ll never forget.

Pros
  • Lots do explore
  • Food
  • Friends
Cons
  • Overcoming language and culture barriers
  • Homesick

Fantastic Program - Would do it again

This program was offered to me and a few other students at my university. With the desire to work in the healthcare field and as someone who has a strong passion for the Spanish language and culture, this was the perfect program. We worked with EdOdyssey and El Sol for approximately eight weeks, Monday-Thursday evenings and the staff and professors of the programs were always so kind-hearted, understanding, and compassionate with the content they delivered. I have been studying the Spanish language for eight years but never found course or attended a school that offered a medically-focused Spanish course. As I mentioned, this was the absolute perfect course that mixed my passions of the medical field and Spanish language.

Mondays and Tuesdays, we worked with El Sol through the language portion of the course and learned the doctor-to-patient dialogue in Spanish. Wednesdays and Thursdays, we worked with EdOdyssey through the cultural modules and learned more about the cultural aspects of a Latinx patient. Both parts of the program, language and culture were always intriguing and eye-opening, and I know I can apply the content that I learned throughout these eight weeks, into my future career.

Regarding the staff and professors of the EdOdyssey and El Sol, everyone was always so helpful, communicative, and understanding. Especially through a virtual format, if we faced some technical difficulties, we would work together to figure it out to ultimately have a beneficial experience. Few technical hiccups here and there, but overall the program ran smoothly.

In short, I would do this program all over again if I could. I loved every minute and every class we had, and want to give a huge thank you to Luis and Profesora Elsa!

Amazing Program - Take It from an Insider's Perspective!

I learned about EdOdyssey's Medical Spanish and Latinx Culture program from my time as one of the company's summer interns. I helped create some of the marketing content prior the project's official release. I can tell from my behind-the-scenes work with the EdOdyssey team that everyone in the company is very passionate about making cultural immersion possible, even during the pandemic. I was blown away by the sheer creativity and dedication that the team put into this program. EdOdyssey is really making the best out of a tough time: travel may be on hold, but learning from valuable cultural experiences doesn't have to be!

From my experience learning about the program from an insider's perspective, I can say that this is no ordinary Spanish course. Students will not only improve their over Spanish skills, but also learn field-specific terms that other Spanish programs may not cover. The Latinx culture aspect of the program will provide students with a deeper understanding of the beliefs that Latinx patients hold regarding their health and help them view cases from a more culturally-informed perspective.

Furthermore, EdOdyssey is working with El Sol, a certified language school based in Lima, Peru, for the Medical Spanish and Latinx culture program. Students will learn directly from Latinx educators who have experience with language and culture in the medical setting. The skills that this program offers are sure to make any Spanish student and/or aspiring healthcare professional stand out! I definitely recommend this program!

Exciting, Unique & Innovative opportunity!

As an EdOdyssey alumni of the Peru Study Abroad program, and a current summer intern with the small company, I am extremely excited about the launch of the new virtual study abroad program. Having studied at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima, I can attest to the high level of academics and passionate professors at the university. Additionally, the EdOdyssey Peru team is made up of some of the nicest people who deeply care about the students they support. Fluent in Spanish and English, the Peruvian team will be able to connect with students in English without trouble, creating a positive and smooth learning environment. Finally, I am particularly excited about the weekly cultural module of this program. Over the past few months I have witnessed the virtual programs come to life and take form. The cultural modules are great because they provide students with important context about Peruvian culture, history, and society. Presented in a relaxed and fun educational setting, the information will easily engage students who may have no prior knowledge about Peru. I truly believe that at the end of this course, students will have a very solid base understanding of key aspects of Peruvian society. Engagement with other cultures is an incredible way for students to broaden their global understanding and to put aspects of their daily life in the U.S. into a broader perspective. Hopefully this program will enable many students to do just that!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
We may not be able to travel at this time, but exciting new virtual programs such as this are great ways to continue to engage with the world without leaving your house! Take a chance on Virtual Study Abroad. There is always more to learn and EdOdyssey has created an extremely intentional program that continues to hold up their core values. EdOdyssey always says that "Travel changes people and people change the world". This phrase still holds true, but in a more abstract way. Via virtual platforms students are able to travel to a different country, engage with locals, and learn in-depth about new cultures. It's not the same as real travel, I'll give you that. But it is definitely worth a try! Maybe this course will be what leads you to change the world!

Study abroad

Studying abroad for 6 months is not an easy decision to make. Going to Peru, I was open minded but had doubts of what would happen throughout the hard times. Fortunately, I had the pleasure of getting to know Peru with the Ed Odessy program, which countless times supported me and fully attended to all my needs and doubts. Soon Peru became like a home to me, thanks to the program coordinator and the other staff who constantly went above and beyond what was expected of them to ensure that we all were well accommodated. The additional trips that were offered throughout the semester and the volunteer opportunities were definitely a huge part of my experience and I am grateful to have been a part of such a beautiful thing. This program enhanced my experience in Peru, and I will be forever grateful for such opportunity.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was during my trip to Iquitos. I am not a fan of nature, while this trip was very beautiful and eye opening, their were many moments where I laughed because of my ridiculous fear of some animals.

Semester abroad in Lima, Peru

Studying abroad for spring semester 2019 was not an easy decision for me. I was very nervous and did not know what to expect. Fortunately enough, the EdOdyssey program helped me transition smoothly and have a great experience in a foreign country. From the moment of arrival in Lima with a warm welcome from the program coordinator, I knew that I had made the right decision. The staff members are very supportive throughout the journey and ensure that all of the participant’s needs are met. Additionally, the program trips and activities helped me become immersed in a community that soon felt like home. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone who is considering stepping out of their comfort zone to embark on a new adventure and might be in need of some excellent guidance!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open minded. Rather than comparing your place of stay to your native country, be present and take in the full experience.
