Grateful for this program

Moving to a different country and learning a completely new culture has been emotionally taxing and very difficult - however Rob and his team ensured that from the day I arrived here I was taken care of, so my transition has been very smooth and really enjoyable! All the small but major things I never thought of (like a new sim card, 😂) were catered for. It has been a less than a week since I arrived, but I feel so comfortable and confident that I'm about to live my greatest life yet. I am eternally grateful and my investment has been well worth every penny.

What was your funniest moment?
In retrospective, all the worries I had.

My experience with English Wizards

I loved cooperating with EW. They were very helpful, and friendly throughout the process.
Especially Rob, and Nick were great. I was able to get a response whenever I needed, and very quickly. Once you get into the community, you get to feel like you have been there for some time, you can find answers to your potential questions & concerns, and even make friends before even going there.
Through the program I was in, I had the opportunity to talk to many different schools all around the country, with EW's reputation, you feel that schools trust, and value you from the first step.
I highly recommend them to anybody who loves languages, travelling, and having fun.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I could have gone with another route.

Teach English in Poland with English Wizards

I have had a breeze since contacting English Wizards about my wish to move to Poland. Everything has been fantastic, thanks to their ready assistance. My husband and I have now been in Poland for a month and we're loving every minute of it. Thank you English Wizards. The weather is not your fault (sic!)

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Last night I went out bar hopping with my new friends. I shocked them when I ate Galareta and actually enjoyed it. Check it out!
Pros
  • I'm abroad - on my bucket list
  • I'm having fun
  • I'm still working on my terms
Cons
  • The sun has kinda disappeared. I see it once a week if I'm fortunate.

Really incredible experience with great support

Teaching in Poland was an incredible experience. The streamlined application process and continuous support made the transition seamless. The teaching placement surpassed expectations, with well-equipped schools and supportive colleagues. Plus I got help finding accomodation. That really made the transition easier. Living in Poland was a cultural experience plus I got excellent local support. Highly recommended. Big thanks to Rob and his team for the support they provided. Hope to take part again in the future. Cheers and Na Zdrowe!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Perogies without any meat in them! Ugh, they're only good with meat.
Pros
  • Great support from the team and fast application process.
Cons
  • Poland can be cold in the winter.

Wonderful but Not Inexpensive

English Wizards was fine; they did everything they promised to do.

EW's service - finding a job and interview assistance, residency permit, accountant, finding housing (tho my employer helped me with this), medical insurance - not cheap, but couldn't have done it by myself. Sole Proprietor = US Independent Contractor, You pay your own taxes, medical, and pension so that cuts into your hourly earnings.

I worked near Wrocław, Poland for 18 months and loved it 90% of the time. I'll always treasure the experience and could go back. I taught ages 9 to adult, group and 1-on-1 classes. I miss some students immensely: their boundless optimism, friendship, determination, affection, and energy. But I also had students and classes that I dreaded: some unruly, highly distracted, and rude kids.

I'm sharing my own experience and what other teachers told me.

The job - Don't think that just because you're a native speaker, you can just sit around and chitchat randomly and call that working. The work is intense, protracted, and under conditions that can be far from ideal. Class size (either too big or too small), uncooperative students (they either won't speak or won't listen), and disparities in ability (struggling students get further behind and act up; advanced students act up if you simplify the lessons). You might dislike the lesson plans or even hate them, but you're told you cannot modify them or use your own material.

We all had the same problems. You might complain to Administration, who often turned it back on you: you're not being energetic enough, not engaging enough, you're boring, students don't respect you, you're too strict, you're too easy-going, etc. I thought 12-14 students was too many in a class but one teacher had ~40.

FINANCES: I had pension income from the US. Without that, I couldn't have done it unless I worked a lot more. I worked 16-20 hours/wk (not counting prep) which usually paid my rent and taxes. My roommate worked 30 hours/wk, sometimes 12 classes a day, plus her own online students, and she still had to ask parents for money. You will want to go home for Christmas or the summer and I know of no schools that pay any airfare.

Vacations - Poland has many holidays and group classes would have 1-2 wk breaks every month or two. The adult individual classes, though, would still be on and your vacation time would not be approved unless you could get another teacher to substitute.

I'd do it all over again, but it's expensive.

What was your funniest moment?
I asked "Mateus" to close the door - but there were two Mateuses, so they both jumped up to close the door, shoving and fighting over it - you had to be there to appreciate the humor. The three girls and I couldn't stop laughing.

Even the adults I met didn't pay close attention to US politics, but I do. So many people have the notion that Donald Trump is a smart, good businessman. So when I'd tell them the latest ignorant, ignominious thing he said that day they wouldn't believe it until I'd show them the clip and they'd laugh hilariously.

I had a student who grew up in the UK and his deadpan humor, with his accent, would crack me up every lesson! So many of my students had very funny senses of humor.
Pros
  • Beautiful country and I loved the proximity to Europe and Middle East. Traveled to 12 countries; many cities. Fascinating conversations were the best part!
  • When I'd have a good day with my favorite students, life was wonderful and I wouldn't trade my job for anything.
  • I had unique cultural experiences, met interesting and unforgettable people who warmly accepted and often admired me.
Cons
  • While the cost of living was much lower in Poland (about 30% of my US cost), so was the pay (about 25% of my US pay).
  • No paid holidays nor sick time. Rent+taxes= ~$850. Working ~20 hrs for 4 wks, nearly paid my rent + taxes. But working only 2 wks/month = ~$400/month.
  • Cancellations - Individual adults especially are busy and often cancel. So you can't always plan on that income.
Response from English Wizards

Hi Corinne,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and balanced reflection on your journey. Your honesty, insight, and perspective are incredibly valuable not only to us, but to future teachers who are seriously considering this path 💬🌍

We’re grateful to know that English Wizards helped make the complex move to Poland possible, especially with navigating legal, administrative, and logistical hurdles. Your story highlights both the highs and the real-world challenges, and that’s what makes it so meaningful. Teaching abroad is rewarding, but also demanding, and your reflections on the classroom, school expectations, and financial realities are spot on for anyone thinking long term.

We’re especially glad you found moments of deep connection, laughter, and cultural exchange that made the journey worthwhile. Those are the memories that stay with us for life.

Thank you again for being part of our community and for paying it forward with your experience. We wish you a joyful return to Poland, and hope your next chapter is just as impactful, maybe even more so 🇵🇱💙

Warm regards,

English Wizards Rocks!

I arrived in Poland from Zimbabwe three months after my application, yes Zimbabwe! This was my first teach and travel venture and at 52 it was awesome as I travelled with my teen daughter. English Wizards handled and helped me through everything - visa, work permit, TRC, job search, bank account and contracts with my schools. The fact that I couldn't speak Polish was not a barrier. I first settled in Rzeszow then moved to Gdansk, places that I used to see on the map. I am back in Africa due to family obligations, but am entertaining the idea of cooperating with English Wizards once more.

Response from English Wizards

Hi Joyce,

We’re so inspired by your story, and honored to have been part of it! 🙌 Traveling from Zimbabwe with your daughter and starting a new teaching adventure at 52 is no small feat. You’ve proven that it’s never too late to begin a bold new chapter.

We’re especially glad the language barrier didn’t stop you from settling in and making the most of life in places like Rzeszów and Gdańsk, both such underrated gems! 🌍

If the time ever feels right to return, we’ll be here and ready to support you again. Thanks for trusting us, and for showing others that courage and adventure truly have no age limit.

Wishing you and your family all the best back home! ❤️

Amazing support

If you're an English teacher eyeing the Polish ELT scene, don't look any further! I was teaching K12 in Turkey back in September 2022 when English Wizards interviewed me. I bought a package right away and the journey began. The road to visa was long and twisty for me, but Nick, Rob and others were always there to help. Thanks to their unwavering support, my visa was granted a few days ago, and I will be flying to Poland soon as an incubator. I'm really excited to join all the other wizards in Krakow.

Response from English Wizards

Highly recommend

English Wizard's service Teach in Poland Program and the visa support package made it possible for me to move to Poland and obtain a visa to continue living and working in Poland as an ESL teacher which I've really loved so far. Demand for English lessons is high so I feel I can safely say that you're bound to find work here. Poland is such a beautiful country, with an unbelieavably rich culture. Moving to a foreign country has its challenges but it makes a world of a difference to know you have the help of experts to assist you along the process - the staff at English Wizards have been SUPER helpful in giving me advice and guidance. They are very knowledgeable and trustworthy. I highly recommend.

Pros
  • Discover a new country and culture
  • Amazing travelling
  • Support

Teaching with English Wizards

I came to Krakow in September 2021 to start teaching English in Poland. My initial contract was with English Wizards (EW). They provided extensive support with regards to sorting all the necessary immigration admin, and I was responsible for finding a teaching post. Although EW provides a regularly updated 'job board' to assist with searches.

From the start and throughout my time here I've found EW extremely helpful, both with administrative queries but also through the provision of lots of social and induction activities to help people make friends and find their feet in the first few months of living in a new country. The staff are friendly, approachable and helpful.

What's more, although no longer directly contracted with them, as I'm part of the 'EW community' I'm still able to contact them for support and advice when necessary. They're a great team and, if you're thinking of teaching English in Poland, I'd definitely recommend getting in touch with them to find out more! Start your adventure...

Pros
  • Excellent administrative support
  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Social activities
Response from English Wizards

Nicky, it’s been a joy having you in the EW community since 2021. Your story reflects exactly what we aim to offer, not just admin support, but a real sense of connection and belonging during those early months in Poland. We’re so glad the job board, social events, and onboarding helped set you up for success. And we absolutely love that you're still in touch even beyond your contract. That’s what makes this a true community. Thanks for recommending us and for continuing to be part of the journey!
