From Surgery to Souvenirs: A Trip to Remember!

Can’t believe I had the chance to shadow as a premed students in Larissa, Greece for 2 weeks! The Philotimo Med program was everything I imagined and more. Observing surgeries, interacting with patients, and getting hands-on learning – it was so educational. What blew me away though was the food. Greek cuisine? Insane. Souvlaki, tzatziki, baklava... I’m literally craving it now. And the accommodation super safe, and comfy. The drive from the airport to Larissa was a bit long, but the views were incredible, so it wasn’t bad at all. Definitely worth the trip!

Pros
  • Incredible exposure to medical procedures, from surgeries to patient interactions.
  • Safe, comfortable accommodations that felt like home.
Cons
  • The transportation to Larissa is pretty long, but the views are nice.
  • no time to travel to the greek islands

10/10 Would Shadow Again: Philotimo Premed Experience in Greece!

OMG, where do I even start? The Philotimo Shadowing program was absolutely amazing. Not only did we get to observe surgeries (yes, real surgeries!) but the food was next level! Like, I’m still dreaming about those Greek salads and gyros. I had never been to Greece before, so getting to explore Larissa was such a vibe. The accommodations were super safe and comfy, and even though the transportation from the airport was a long ride, it was totally worth it. And everything was in English – no stress at all! Highly recommend this experience if you want to shadow in a real hospital setting while experiencing Greece like never before.

Pros
  • Everyone spoke English
  • The program make me more independent
  • Got a better idea what's to be a doctor
Cons
  • Traveling from Athens is way far.

A Life-Changing Experience with Medicine and Culture

The Philotimo Med shadowing program was an experience of a lifetime being in the operating room for the first time was surreal. I witnessed a knee replasmen and it was fascinating to see the precision and skill of the surgeons. But it wasn’t just about medicine – the program also gave us the chance to immerse ourselves in the beautiful culture of Greece. The trip to Meteora was stunning, with the towering rock formations and historic monasteries. The food was also a highlight – from fresh Greek yogurt to amazing seafood dinners, I couldn’t get enough. Stavros made everything run smoothly, and he was always there to answer any questions. His support and friendliness really made a difference in making this trip both educational and enjoyable.

A Dream Come True – First Time in Surgery!

Being part of the Philotimo Med shadowing program was an absolute dream! The most unforgettable part of the experience was stepping into the surgery room for the first time. I had the opportunity to watch a thyroidectomy and a hernia repair surgery. Seeing the precision and expertise of the surgeons was inspiring. It made me even more passionate about pursuing a career in medicine.

The highlight of the program wasn't just the surgeries though – the excursions were fantastic too! The visit to Meteora was one of the most fun parts of the trip. Hiking to the monasteries was an adventure I’ll never forget. And I can’t forget the food – from fresh pastries in the morning to delicious souvlaki at lunch, I was never hungry!

Stavros was a great guide throughout the whole process. He made sure we had everything we needed, whether it was helping with the hospital protocol or recommending the best spots to eat in town. I’ll always remember this program as a pivotal moment in my journey to becoming a doctor.

An Unforgettable Journey in Medicine and Culture!

My two-week shadowing program at the Philotimo Med in Larissa was nothing short of extraordinary! As a high school senior, this was my first time inside a surgery room, and I was absolutely captivated. I had the chance to observe two major surgeries: a laparoscopic gallbladder removal and a knee replacement. The precision of the surgeons and the teamwork in the operating room were incredible.
Aside from the medical experience, the program also included a fantastic excursion to Meteora, where we explored the stunning monasteries perched on rock formations. The views were breathtaking, and it was a great mix of learning and relaxation. The food was amazing – every meal was a feast, and I’ll never forget the delicious Greek breakfasts at our accommodation, which were the perfect start to each day.
Stavros, the program director, was always there to help with anything we needed. Whether it was advice about the hospital or tips for exploring Larissa, he made sure we were comfortable and informed at all times. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

Dentistry, Culture, and Adventure in One Program

The hands-on exposure in the dental clinic was fantastic. I learned so many things that I didn't expect. The doctors are very supportive and friendly. Greek people are very friendly and respectful toward other races, they made me feel at home. Staying in Athens made it even better, with all the amazing history and culture around me. Our Philotimo excursions were to the Acropolis, The Parthenon, and the public market. I really want to come back soon. Huge thanks to Stavros for organizing everything so well!

A Life-Changing Experience in Athens

This program gave me the opportunity to shadow general dentists in a real clinical setting. The knowledge and exposure I gained were priceless! Staying in the heart of Athens allowed me to explore the historic sites and enjoy Greek culture. I honestly think Stavros created the program based on detail and love for the students. Thank you, Dr. Maria and Dr. Sotiria, for your mentorship, and a special thanks to Stavros for his continuous support. I highly recommend this program to anyone considering dentistry!

What was your funniest moment?
During our group meal, Stavros got up and started dancing to greek music. I think he loves so much his job.
