Life as is...

My name is Alyssa. I'm from Canada. My overall experience in South Korea is truly unforgettable. It is a place that I was able to find my passion, being with kids and the community. I was able to learn a lot of different, refreshing values and culture. I was able to improve on myself in many different ways as being here taught me the life that I never experienced before. I found my purpose in teaching and being with the kids and community every day shaped me the way I am today. I've realized that I have become a better version of myself. We may be teaching the kids English but they showed us their love and pride in their culture and language.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment is speaking konglish with my students. My students imitate the way I speak in both English and Korean. I speak to them in English but they teach me Korean words. When I try pronouncing the words, they imitate me as they find it funny that I couldnt say the words properly. They would laugh at first but they try their best to help me to say the words properly. I didn't mind them laughing as I enjoy their presence and their effort of trying to be close to me. In this way, I create fond memories with them.
Pros
  • Independence & Passion
  • Meeting new friends
  • Culture
Cons
  • Culture
  • Language barrier
  • Social forms

Good For Meeting People

The course is a great way to get accustomed to Thailand, and in my opinion, the most important thing that it helps with is connecting you with like-minded people in the same boat as you. Not only making you feel comfortable and less culture shocked, but also providing you with friends in the same position that you can be with whilst you are here, working and living in Thailand. The course itself may not be the most useful thing when it comes to teaching, although it does help you understand how to lesson plan and prepares you at least for what to expect to a certain extent, but being able to meet other people from similar places that you have come from is the true gem that the course provides. The cost is very high in my opinion, and the course itself could be done online. Keep this is mind, but understand that the biggest thing is being able to connect with people as soon as you arrive, and that is a very helpful asset.

Worth it !

I am super glad I took this program and incredibly happy with the way things are going. I started as a new teacher and I feel the program helped me gain confidence and experience necessary, even in the short time of the course. Now I am traveling and teaching and enjoying beautiful Costa Rica. :) I would definitely recommend, especially for solo travelers but also those traveling with friends can definitely benefit! After sharing my experience with friends and family, a number of them are considering taking the program for themselves!

Pros
  • Culture Immersion
  • Hands on Experience
  • Explore new Countries

Wonderful Company

The program is straight forward, helpful, and equips you with skills that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. I enjoyed my time living in San Ramon. The course is in person and we got through a lot of information in a short amount of time. One thing I really enjoyed about the course was that even though we had a lot of work, we also had a lot of down time. The energy in Costa Rica is beautiful as well, so if anyone is looking for a place to heal, rest, grow, and just experience pura vida this is the experience for you. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I recommend for open minded people to try it out.

What would you improve about this program?
I would include scheduled movie nights, group dinners, and a weekly brunch. We started doing that in my cohort and it was really nice. Maybe a night food tour would be cool as well.
Pros
  • Engaging Classes
  • Large Farmer’s Market
  • Cute Cafes
Cons
  • Not enough cleaning supplies for individual who want to clean their own room

TESOL in San Ramon, CR

In July 2025, I got the chance to complete my TESOL in San Ramon, Costa Rica. The program is given at a hostel, which is also where you can stay for the month. The hostel itself is clean, safe, has good wifi, a shared kitchen and everything you may need during your time there. Although do not expect a five star hotel. You may sleep in a bunk bed and struggle to share kitchen space.

The staff at the hostel are friendly, and always there to assist you in everything you may need.

San Ramon may look rough around the edges, but the people are friendly and the town has everything you need. Don’t hesistate to venture out and expand your horizons.

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest or funnest moment was when we went to teach English and spend time with Elderly women who were cancer survivors. They were sweet, funny and it was a great to immerse myself in Costa Rican culture.
Pros
  • Great place to immerse yourself in the costa rican culture and language
  • The staff at the Hostel are warm and welcoming
  • Full of cultural activities
Cons
  • Bring ear plugs!!! The Hostel is located near a busy street and the noise is very loud.
  • Be prepared for a small bathroom
  • Be prepared to share a kitchen. You may not be able to cook all of your meals this month.

Living my dream and it is filled with adventures and personal growth!

My overall experience in South Korea has been absolutely fulfilling and rewarding despite of the language barrier challenges I face. In the few months that I have been here I have done a lot of travelling and content creation for my social media pages. Korea is truly breathtaking from the countryside to the city nightlife to the hiking trails. I am super excited to experience the winter here! I am also a huge K-pop and K-drama fan so it has been a dream come true attending concerts here and going to filming locations.

The workplace culture is very different from my home country but I am really enjoying my time working with kids. It is quite rewarding and heartwarming. I have become more understanding and appreciative of the Korean culture.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Firstly, I would definitely say try to learn basics of Korean before coming for a working holiday here. Most places in Seoul speak English but outskirts of Seoul it is hard to find people in places that understand English. Secondly, downloading these apps- Naver maps, Kakao Taxi, Papago, Coupang and Klook is a must! I use these almost everyday.

I also knew Korea gets hot during summer but I definitely was not prepared for the humidity so that was something I had to get used to, I have gotten more used to it now than the first month that I arrived. So I would say give yourself some time to get used to the environment and bring lots of sunscreen from your home country. It can get frustrating at first with the heat but eventually you will settle in!
Pros
  • Experience a new culture
  • Eat delicious food and dessert
  • Travel for breathtaking views
Cons
  • Language barrier
  • Discomfort with initial moving into apartment
  • Getting used to the humidity

A great opportunity

Xplore offers a great opportunity for you to experience living, working and traveling in and to another country and helps you every step of the way with immerging yourself in the culture. I really like all the help they offered me whenever I got stuck with something. They have a lot of knowledge of how things work in Korea, so I could ask them a question and they would help immediately. For instance with reserving a train ticket or getting a taxi. They were really fast to respond to every question. I highly recommend!

A wonderful experience

I loved completing my TESOL qualification with Xplore in Costa Rica. I spent the month training in San Ramon, a cute Costa Rican city, with great people to complete it. The month flew by and i learned so much!

Nicky, the TESOL instructor was amazing throughout! Also Jordayne was great at helping us with the interview and job searching process.

I am now still teaching at a school in Costa Rica! It will have been a year since i arrived in January and i couldn't be happier with my choices. I highly recommend if you are someone that wants to try something new, immerse yourself in a new culture and develop as a person.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Nicky and I went and did a Temezcal, an ancient medicinal sauna, with people from the local community in San Ramon. It was a beautiful thing to experience, and we saw a new side of culture and community.
Pros
  • Push yourself out of your comfort zone!
  • Make new friends!
  • Experience new places!
Cons
  • The kitchen at the accommodation wasn't great.

Good experience

This was a new experience for me. I struggled quite a bit at times, but the support was great and Nicky worked well with me. Jordayne and Honey were great also. That this was the first time here was a challenge, plus being the oldest there sure set the stage for a challenge like no other. My class mates were a lot younger than me, but they were supportive of me and were very helpful. The field trips and walking quite a bit through town was a nice experience. I kind of wish I had more time to do things, but hope to go back in the future.

What was your funniest moment?
Trying to keep up with everyone!

My time in Costa Rica - Leonidas Langford

I've been living in Costa Rica for 7 months. It definitely has its high moments and its low moments. Overall, it's been a great experience. Let me tell you why.

So XploreAsia supported me with documents and advice. Jordayne has always been there when I've asked questions and always offered me the most useful advice. Travelling can be nerve-racking but there's always people you can ask for help. So journey was good. San Ramon with the chicas was great. Its the placement program. I only stayed there for a week but I got to make some great friends and it was nice to settle into Costa Rica this way, kind of like a holiday before the school term starts.

The school. It's got issues but overall I've enjoyed it. No school is gonna be perfect but if there's one thing I've learnt about moving abroad you can't be too picky and you need to be open minded otherwise you'll just move back home. Oral expression is fun and the students are great. One thing tho never been paid on time but when asked they have done it. So be prepared for admin issues. I've covered marked exams and yeah school is decent. Driver takes me to school.

Social life great. I've dated, learned some Spanish and relaxed. Great tbh. I have my own room with shower.

Costa Rica is expensive. So if you wanna save money I'd suggest cooking at home or eating at your school cafeteria.

What was your funniest moment?
“One of my funniest moments was going on a date and trying to speak Spanish the whole time. I accidentally said something completely wrong and the girl laughed so much she had to explain it back to me. It turned into a running joke the rest of the night, and honestly moments like that make you realize how fun (and humbling) learning a new language abroad can be.”
Pros
  • Travel was made easy
  • Finding accomodation was smooth
  • I like my classes.
Cons
  • Bad communication from the school
  • Sometimes I have felt overworked.
  • It rains in the afternoon.
