I went to volunteer in December 2013. What a disappointment. Even though I asked them numerous times in advance, it turned out to be holiday progremme, so the programmes were not running. I was supposed to help out with the disabled children, something I would have loved to do, and, as a bonus, would also look good on my resumé. Unfortunately, all I got to do now was just 'play' with the other kids from the townships, to keep them busy. Fun, but not what I had signed up (and payed!) for.
If you are not that keen on volunteering and just want to party a lot, then I can definitely say that it is the place to be. Real volunteering? I honestly do not know, but definitely not during the summer holidays. Very disappointed.
Response from SAVE Volunteering
Dear Volunteer, Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear about your experience. We have since amended our programme over the December holiday period. All schools are closed over this period, however there is always children in the townships that do not go away over the festive period. SAVE still runs its volunteer programmes to cater for these less fortunate kids.
We do make a point of making the volunteer aware of the programme changes when they book over this period as SAVE runs projects up until and including the 25 December.
We are sorry if this was not communicated to you at the time of booking. Your contribution was still meaningful and brought joy to the children that was not fortunate enough to go away or celebrate Christmas like we all know.
Regards,
Sergio Dreyer
