Housing Project in Nicaragua

This was a very important project. Building a house within a week allowed us to engage in a project with very concrete outcomes, and our group had the opportunity to see the impact that its work had on the community with which we worked. The organization engages in valuable, sustainable work within the communities that it serves, and we felt fortunate to have been a part of that. Working on a construction site with a group whose abilities varied, with little training, was challenging, but in the end we were able to build a house and fulfill the goals of a project. Not everyone involved put forth the same amount of effort, but that is to be expected, to some degree. In such a context, flexibility is key; regardless of how well you prepare, you don't fully know what you will encounter. On the whole, it was a very rewarding project and overall experience; it was affordable and, for the most part, well-organized. I would recommend this program to other groups.

What would you improve about this program?
Depending on the participants involved, these types of projects can take on a more positive or negative tone, and the organization can't control that aspect of the program. At times, however, the leaders could have used more guidance and experience, structure and support, particularly with providing feedback to the student participants and facilitating the work of the group's leaders. Also, the intended roles of the staff were not always clear. While there were many positive aspects of the location, there were not many activities available to participants after our work on the job site was completed each day. Most importantly, however, is that we were provided with the tools necessary to get the job done, and we made an impact on the lives of members of the community.

FIU Alternative Breaks

This program opens you up to completely new experiences and realities of what the world outside the U.S. looks like. For many, like myself, it is considered a culture shock because you don't expect to see certain deplorable situations. This program is an amazing way to give back through community service while also learning about beautiful Nicaragua and its people. It has provided with myself and my peers with an unforgettable experience that has lead me to continue my service for Nicaragua and its people.

What would you improve about this program?
There is a lack of strong communication with the service site and the program which in the end lead to many discrepancies.
There is no detailed overview/breakdown of what the money we're paying is going to. When it came time to finishing our service, we were missing many materials which should have already been purchased.

Wonderful experience

Norman and Katie were wonderful to work with. They helped create a program that allowed our student nurses to feel like nurses, especially through our work in the rural clinics. Our time in Nicaragua was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I would highly encourage anyone contemplating a medical brigade to jump in a go with Panorama.

Loved it

Well, I can say that the work we did was extremely labor intensive, but it was worth putting our time and effort into something that would not only benefit a community, but also the world at large. I can say a lot of things about my experience in Nicaragua,it was fun, it was something different, and for the first time in my life, I was pushed to a limit physically, where I had to assess my mental and physical health.

What would you improve about this program?
Have a more diverse group.

My First Trip Alone

I very much enjoyed my trip to the island of Ometepe in Nicaragua. I was excited about it before I went, while I was there, and still am after. I am actually in the process of trying to go again this year. I believe our trip was very beneficial to the island as we worked toward helping their environment. Nicaragua as well as other countries have a deforestation problem, and we just got started by trying to expand the plants that are natural to its land. To be exact, we were able to prepare 2,332 seed bags to be planted across the island. The best thing is that we were able to help the community while still enjoying ourselves.

What would you improve about this program?
My first thought was my encounter with a scorpion. However, I was not hurt, and something like this is always bound to happen on a trip. Phenomenal experience overall!

Great Experience

I loved the community we worked in while doing this project. The community was very welcoming and a great learning experience. I felt completely safe all of the time and the children in the community were the sweetest. During my time in Nicaragua, our goal was to help redirect storm water. So part of our trip involved digging very deep holes for the storm water to drain into since there is no irrigation system. The work was very Manuel and difficult but the community really appreciated our work and kept saying how much of a difference we were making. I loved the place we stayed, it was very safe, had air conditioning, and the food was excellent. Katie was our program leader and she was excellent! There was a few times we were waiting on supplies to finish our volunteer work but that is not her fault. She was very helpful in translating for us and always made sure we had everything we needed. The program also provided a cultural day which was very interesting and we got to see many different parts of Nicaragua. I am looking forward to possibly going back in the future.

What would you improve about this program?
I loved the program. The only thing that I did not like was we had ice cold showers which made it very difficult to get a long, good shower. There were also a couple of times that we did not have the supplies we needed to complete the job and had to wait for awhile but other than that we had a great time. I also think it would help if the program was able to get one more good truck to transport everyone.

Great Experience!

This was a trip to remember. After meeting with the community leaders, we had a deeper understanding of how our efforts were going to help the island and its inhabitants.

Although we were all exhausted after a week of scavenging and planting over 1000 seeds it was well worth the experience.

Unforgettable

As a site leader to this project, I took part in organizing our activities while on site as well as fundraising for the project. Once on site, all stress from having to fund raise and plan went away. I did encounter a lot of hard work, from collecting top soil, to searching for seeds, and even gathering horse manure, but in the end, as I saw and counted how many seeds we had plated, it gave me a sense of accomplishment to know that even someone like me can make a difference in this world. I would never exchange the experience I had on this site for anything in the world. I also look forward to continuing the project this Spring.

I would not change anything about this program.

Great Service, Okay Organization

The trip as a whole was brilliant. We accomplished building a sturdy, spacious house for a large family that did not have an adequate housing structure before we arrived. The coordinators for PSE had very good intentions but at times lacked initiative, execution and communication. Some members who worked for PSE did not work as hard as others and at times it felt like we could have been doing the work more efficiently to accomplish our goals. While the trip was an enormous learning process for myself and my group, I hope PSE learned as much on there end about improving the program to provide quality service trips to future organizations.

What would you improve about this program?
Organizing the day to day operations to be more efficient. Also, always have a cheerful attitude no matter how many things are not going as planned and make sure to work as hard as the volunteers coming to serve.

The Impact

This experience was great as we were able to build a house for a family of four in one week. We were able to see the conditions they were living in previously and complete the house so they could move in! It was awesome to celebrate with them at the end of the week and see their faces as they were imagining the new life they would have in this new place!
