Flash Flood Mitigation: Managua, Nicaragua
About Program
The scenic hillsides outside of Managua house many communities. During rainy season, scenic wonders become threats to these communities, not only funneling water down a destructive path, but creating swirling torrents on streets trapping and sometimes carrying away younger residents. One of the many benefits of reforestation in coffee plantations is the symbiotic relationship shade trees have with a healthy harvest and with surrounding communities’ environmental betterment. During the torrential rainy season the project will reduce water run-off to down-hill communities which exacerbate living conditions below, consequently improving their quality of life. Your team will work on a long-term flash-flood mitigation project. Activities are planned to include (1) planting various types of trees ; (2) rehabilitating hilltop flood control systems; (3) educating community residents on environmental conservation techniques.
