Brighton Semester Abroad was Amazing

I was very nervous about heading out to do my semester abroad at the University of Brighton, however it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Brighton itself is an absolutely wonderful place it’s full of so much queer culture and will make all members of the LGBTQ+ community feel welcomed and accepted. If you’re queer and trying to find a place to study abroad where you will feel safe and have fun, go to Brighton. The town itself has super fun queer nightlife with Club Revenge being my favorite.

Beyond that element, the university of Brighton’s study abroad office was absolutely wonderful. The staff takes you on many wonderful trips that were so extremely fun and were excellent ways to get to know your fellow students. My program also had a shared British Culture class with all my fellow study abroad students. It was wonderful because we all got to know each other pretty well and all relied on each other as we were all going through the same experiences.

Really though, the best thing was the people I met. I have met truly some of my best friends that I have full confidence I will know for the rest of my life. The people are what made my program truly excellent. If you’re not sure if you want to study abroad at Brighton, I would say absolutely take the risk and do it, it will be one of the best experiences of your life.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We got to see so many iconic filming locations and castles. We saw where multiple Bridgeton locations were filmed which was so cool as my friends and I totally geeked out on that fun fact.
Pros
  • Fabulous people
  • LGBT+ friendly
Cons
  • You will be busy

Review

The support of the study abroad coordinators was fantastic and they were always so helpful. The main issues I faced was that we were originally not placed in the same residence halls as the other exchange students and felt extremely isolated. My room as mouldy, old, and not as up to date as the others were and that made us feel left out and excluded. Once we found a way to switch we had a significantly better experience. Another thing that was a downside was how far away Falmer campus is from Brighton and everything. I felt it very hard to get around and a bit unmotivating to leave halls as it was such an effort to get food, do activities, etc.

What was your funniest moment?
Good times with the other people on exchange we met!
Pros
  • Helpful faculty
  • Safe environment
  • Good coursework
Cons
  • Falmer campus so far from everything

Great opportunities

I had such a great time studying abroad at Brighton University, I had so many chances to explore surrounding areas and other countries, the teachers were very supportive and made my experience that much better. I also really enjoyed my class experience, learning aa much as I did and the options of classes- I had a chance to take classes I wouldn’t have been able to at my home university. My only complaint is the housing- caused a lot of unnecessary stress and concerns: issues with water and heating made living slightly uncomfortable.

The best time of my life. I'll be back!

The time in Brighton was the best time I've had in my life so far! I met great people from all over the world with whom I am still in good contact. The International Office supported me very well and always answered all my questions, I felt very well looked after. The excursions to Oxford and Sussex etc. were well organised and were a great way to get to know the country better, I would recommend it to anyone! The university offers small courses in which I was able to learn a lot. The city is great for students, there is always a lot to discover and yet you feel at home.
I liked it so much that I am currently planning to return to Brighton for my Master's degree :)

Pros
  • International friendships
  • Get to know a new culture
  • Improve language skills
Cons
  • Expensive

TCH Summer Brighton

This experience taught me the gift of strangers and taking a leap of faith. It has opened my heart to trying new things, being bad at them, and loving them anyways. I think that’s a powerful lesson. As an educator, I think I will be working to include more individual time with my students and work on advocating for all learning styles. Lots of the adults I talked to in UK schools went on about the teacher-peer ratio and how it needs help. Building a connection with my kids will be the most critical part of my job, and from the adults, I’ve talked to) it is the most crucial part to kids too. Listening to my kid's needs, adapting to their learning styles, and making their lives easier, is how I want to roll. I had no clue that I could walk up to a stranger and start a conversation. There is no way I would do something like that at home, but with the confidence, I found in Brighton, I was able to do it. I hope this is something I can carry over at home because it is a great skill I developed.
Overall, I adored this program! I met the most amazing people within and outside of the program, and am so happy I had this experience. We saw amazing things and I learned so much about myself, England, schools abroad, and more!

Pros
  • build great friendships
  • lots of free time
Cons
  • no air conditioning
  • had to buy food a lot more than i thought

Great Program!

I met some of my best friends through USAC where we have continued to meet up outside of the study abroad program. I wish I could go back and relive it all. Definitely the best few months of my life. Plus, travel in Europe is WAY cheaper once you are there so you can get some extra travel in outside of classes. I 100% recommended studying abroad. It may be a little nerve wracking at first, which is understandable. But, it is 100% worth it and once you arrive, everyone is in the same boat so it is extremely easy to make friends.

Pros
  • Make new friends
  • Experience a new culture
  • Travel!
Cons
  • Money
Response from University of Brighton

Nice

The opportunities this program has opened up for me is amazing. This program allowed me to grow as a person and learn to be independent. I loved my experience of creating a new life in a city I never imagined I would live. The friendships I have made will never be forgotten. I am so greatful to have had this opportunity and encourage anyone thinking of doing this to DO IT. If there is an opportunity take it. I have grown so much as a person for the better. I have also been able to travel to so many more places than I would have in the states

Pros
  • Support
  • Friends
  • Opportunity
Cons
  • Cost
