The Adventure of Volunteering

My adventure of volunteering in Africa, started from One World Center, an institution that provide all the skills to take action against poverty in the country of Mozambique. The Volunteering program consists in three months of studies and preparation in sociological, political, and social leadership skills.

Who decides to volunteer will experience a very large personal and emotional growth. The program challenges you in different aspects of life that allow you to grow not only as a professional but also in personally way. Humanitarian work goes beyond conventional work, since it is about understanding the reality of others, of seeking with respect and solidarity the welfare of the most vulnerable people in the world. Many african communities needs your help.

In addition to studies on the poverty and reality of the world, you will also have beautiful experiences within the One World Center, such as summer camps, weekends buildings and other activities that will allow you to meet many people who wants to help and leave a mark in the society.

After three months of studies, my adventure continued in Chimoio, a small city 20 hours far away by car from Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. While four months that I lived over there, I experimented the best travel of my life. Being a Volunteer in Namathanda, a vulnerable community that despite the difficulties such as the absence of water and food smile every day. I am sure that I learned more from them than what I could share them. Every day in that beautiful country was a blessing for me.

After the work done in Africa, I returned to the United States to complete my program. For two more months, I traveled to different cities to share the experience and inspire more people about to take the same decision as I. Act against poverty, an adventure that transforms your life.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
If you are interested in this social adventure, I invite you to volunteer with love and the firm objective of helping those who need it. Africa needs love and greater social leaders who collaborate with the process to improve people's quality of life. We all deserve to live with dignity.

You can be a hero

Many people are dying by hunger , disease , etc.. and they don’t know how to solve this problem and they can not solve this problem so these people need our help. We have a chance to help them.

I participated in an agricultural project in Brazil. The project purpose was to reduce malnutrition. The main idea was to teach them how to grow plants and how to maintain the gardens. We taught a lot of things but also we leaned a lot of things from them. It was good experiences for me. I was able to grow one step.

What would you improve about this program?
I was very shy person and I wan’t good at speaking english , I didn’t have confidence but Through this project I always approached to people and talked so I have improved my personality. If you have a chance to join this program , you will learn a lot of things and knowledge and during i was doing this program I met a lot of nice people and It's nice to know people from all over the world.

SAVE THE WORLD, SAVE YOURSELF

There are so many people who want to leave their normal life and their normal job. They don't feel comfortable with the monotony of regular life. They are looking for something different.

One World Center’s program took me out of my comfort zone and helped me know the world in a different way than traveling as a tourist. Through this experience, my work and time have added value. I am helping to build a better world through my actions while feeling myself grow to become a better human being.

As an international participant in the 18-Month Program, I traveled to two countries, two continents, two different cultures and histories. This program allowed me to explore both the United States and Mozambique. I saw the contrast between these worlds and learned for myself the reality of poverty around the World which added value to my experience working with communities in Africa.

For the first part of my program, I trained at One World Center’s campus in Michigan for six months before going to Mozambique. During my training, I learned about organic farming, history, climate change and other important subjects to understand the reality in Africa. There was special emphasis on learning to work with the community and fight poverty “shoulder to shoulder” with them instead of telling communities what to do.

In Africa, I had the opportunity to practice all the knowledge that I learned in the field. I worked in three schools helping provide better conditions for children and participated in school lunch programs. When I came back to the United States for the last six months of my program, I had the opportunity to share my experience in nine cities to empower people to help make our world better.

This was a unique experience because I stopped thinking, took a chance, and just started doing it.

I recommend this program to people who are looking to leave their normal lives. This is a real experience because you make things happen, feel the connection with the communities overseas, and learn more about cultures around the World. It will change your life.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice for the future of the people in this program is to understand that the work is not always about the money. it's also about the smiles and love from the people that one works with and its not equal to any sum of money, that will give you real happines.

It was so precious time in my life.

I used to think that it is for only those who get prepared fully to help with the poor people.

Since I met this program, the answer of my doubt said "No"

We all are responsible to make a better world.

In a small picture, you're part of helping with the poor people as long as you considered the global issues like global warming and climate change where the poor suffer from those issues based on the examples of "Water conflict between Kenya and Ethiopia"

Every single thing we do may impact on hugely in the other side of the earth either good or bad.

Being aware what is going in the reality.

What would you improve about this program?
As we meet a lot of people from all over the world, I could learn many things.

The more people are involved in and aware of it, the closer we moved a bit in a better world.

A Great Opportunity!

Thanks to this program you can try out a different lifestyle and learn a lot about other cultures, global issues and even yourself. Living in community is not always easy, but it definitely teaches us a lot about who we are, what is the power of a collective and how we can solve issues together.

The experience is challenging and rewarding.

Just do it!

What would you improve about this program?
The program would be better if more people were involved. The more the better, so it can be more dynamic and fun!
