The greatest, unforgettable experience of my life

As I got the chance of studying in Brighton, I wasn't even aware which terrific time would await me. I always liked the idea of living in England as far as I knew London and by the sea, this dream seemed to be complete, and it was. Yet it's not only about the hipster flair Brighton is offering or the surrounding countryside of Sussex which made the time in Sussex unforgettable. It was the rich in international people studying and teaching there. I've learned much for a lifetime. Brighton has got so many options to spend a good time, either it's for afternoon tea, Sunday roasts, Fish'n'chips or a chilled open air cinema or a concert by fantastic British musicians! A real recommendation is the Language Café Society, a society organised by the university where you can get to know people from all over the world and practice your language skills! The workload of the classes is of good amount and it's good if you take classes with international students. The new housing on campus is more than comfortable and amazing at the same time and so are the leisure time activities on campus (Falmer Bar, Room 76, Northield Bar, sports clubs and societies). The infrastructure Sussex is providing its students is the best I can imagine - Brighton is one of most liveable city in England and that's not without a reason, I miss every second of its pleasurable life there!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Take every chance to do something and get to know places and people - so you can make the most and best out of it! The most important is: go out, try new things, open yourself up & get out of your comfort zone! That is the most easing and relaxing thing you can do! Do as much as you can do and time allows - time flies so fast when you are having fun! The diverse student culture and the mixture of living away from home are providing as much freedom where you need brevity to open yourself up to all the open-minded, spirited people who you will be meeting throughout all of Sussex University.

Thanks for this amazing review, Erika! It sounds like you had just the most fantastic time in Brighton and at Sussex.

Great experiences - Fall 2017

The stuffs are supportive in most cases except accomination which can be a bit challenge (in my case, one-semester exchange students will stay in a hotel downtown). Their academic classes are great and I love the idea of divding into multiple sessions/classes later for large classes. The campus location does not locate in the cetre of the city, Brighton though. To me, I like it because it makes students to stay on campus and do things together. The bus ride is only 15 minutes to the city centre and bus is avaliable throughout the night.

Thank you, Thanakorn, for your review!

2017 Sussex Abroad

What an adventure. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and learned so much about cultures around Europe. I’ve made life-long friends. The only complaint is Langford’s Hotel, where the international students stayed at. I hope no one has to stay there long-term. Other than that, the experience was magical.
I chose easier classes so that I could focus on learning UK culture. I didn’t spend too much time studying; I spent a ton of time exploring. I pushed myself to start a music club on campus to meet more people and join the dance team. Weekends were dedicated to traveling around UK and Europe.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
The program is what you make of it. I recommend people to push themselves to meet locals, join school clubs, join sports teams, assimilate to a new culture. It’s difficult, but it makes all the difference when you put in the effort.
Response from University of Sussex

Thanks Tiffany for your review - and great to know what a good time you had here at Sussex and in Brighton. It sounds like you made the most of your time here. And thanks too for your feedback about housing, something we're always looking to try to improve for students.

Love, life, research.

I have been studying as a phd student at University of Sussx - School of English during the last semester. Brighton is a perfect mixture of Love, life and resarch. Social life is incredible. The city is full of pubs, clubs, cinemas. There are a lot of cultural events, gigs, performances. Sussex University' library is really well furnished. I bet that you would also find your love among the most queer and free city in Uk. Moreover,,the landscapes are amazing. The seafront, full of routes for hiking. I relly recommend.

Thanks Dario for your review, and so great to hear you had such a good time here at Sussex!

my erasmus at the University of Sussex

Now that i have just finished my exchange I can say that I made the best desition ever going to the University of Sussex. Everyone is very helpful and caring. Very comfortable facilities. One of the things that surprised me the most is the amount of socials that are ofered for students, that makes the university more than just classes and helps you to make new friends and create great memories.
I had a really great time and I would totally recomend this place for a year abroad as you can find a very intercultural environment at campus.

Response from University of Sussex

Wow, that's so great to hear, Patricia! We're so pleased you had such a wonderful time here at Sussex and in Brighton.

2016-17 Year at Sussex

I stayed at the University of Sussex for a full year, and it was the best decision I've made in my young adult life. I had never been to England before, actually I'd never stepped foot over the Atlantic before this experience. Everyone at Sussex was so welcoming, the campus was gorgeous (it backs right up onto a national park which made for the best strolls), and the courses were very challenging. Acclimating an American college education into the British system can be very daunting, especially in terms of the grading system and course expectations, but I found it all to be worth it because of the experiences Brighton and Sussex have to offer for such a large international student population. Some of my fondest memories, and closest friendships were made there.

What would you improve about this program?
Be mindful that an on-campus university lifestyle can be quite expensive, and plan accordingly.
Response from University of Sussex

Thanks for your review, Kristina! 'It was the best decision I've made in my young adult life' is great for us to read too!! We're so glad that your experience was so formative for you, especially several years on.

Great school in an interesting city!

I really enjoyed my time at the University of Sussex in their Summer School. I was there for one session (roughly a month), which was a nice amount of time to acclimate to England. Classes were insightful and it was easy to travel into Brighton to sightsee, find places to eat, and explore the area. There is also a nice system of trails connected directly to the university that are nice to walk down. It was also fairly easy and quick to travel to other cities in England with the rail system. I would recommend to anyone looking to study in Europe!

Response from University of Sussex

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review Colin! We're so pleased to hear you enjoyed the walking trails surrounding campus and Brighton.

UCEAP Physics @ Sussex

The program is fast paced and the content isn't easy. The midterms have 10 questions in an hour all multiple choice. The final is 20 multiple choice questions.
Every other week you have an exam.
The TA's are helpful and knowledgeable. They are shy compared to American ones but are very friendly once spoken to.
The flats are very nice, spacious, clean, and private. I really enjoyed the accessibility to public transportation which is really reliable.
Tour groups cater to university students and will leave from campus to countries like France and the Netherlands so traveling is convenient.
The Gatwick airport is close to campus and is 2 trains away.
The study abroad directors plan multiple excursions to places like Oxford, Stonehenge, the Royal Pavilion, etc.

What would you improve about this program?
The food offered is not very tasty (bland) and is pretty repetitive.
Response from University of Sussex

Thank you for your detailed review Kaelie - it's great to hear that you settled into the Physics programme and were able to experience England and Europe outside of class!

Thanks for your feedback on the food - we'll pass this onto our catering team.

Wishing you all the best for the future!

Pace was difficult, experience worthwhile

I did the Sussex program for physics through UCEAP and it is by far the most academically challenging task I have had to date. The learning pace was much too fast for me and some personal issues came up during my trip that caused my focus to waver. There is quiz after quiz, test after test and I had no chance to grasp concepts before it was too late it felt like. The social life was great, everyone around was friendly and even though I struggled, I wouldn’t change that experience for the world. If you have second thoughts or if money is a concern, know that money can always be payed back and experiences are forever!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Future travelers, plan ahead around your exams so you can sort out where you are staying and where you are going. You’ll save a lot of money. Also ask for recommendations from people that have already gone!
Response from University of Sussex

Physics Summer Abroad - The best experience ever!

I did the physics summer abroad program through UCEAP at my school, which allows you to complete 3 quarters of physics lab and lecture in 8 weeks! It sounds crazy but it's really not, because your only focus is school when you're there. Lectures were recorded, review sessions were offered, the book was helpful. I recommend this to everyone - Brighton was also a great place to go out at night or during the day. There were lots of cute shops to walk around, and the pier reminded me of Santa Monica.

I made a lot of friends through this program, a lot from California that I still keep in touch with, and a few from Brighton that I still keep in touch with. One of my friends from Brighton visited LA just a few weeks ago! This program helps you get ahead in school and gives you the time to make friends and build lasting relationships.

Response from University of Sussex

Thanks for your review Sabrina - we're pleased to see that the Physics resources helped you during your studies.
