About Program

The study of food is a new and interdisciplinary field linking ecology with the biological, social and cultural sciences. It is best augmented by extended sojourns in rich and different learning environments – settings where students can observe and reflect upon differences in ecology and culture between their homes and this new place they have entered.

GLi has pioneered in using the Italian peninsula as a natural laboratory for providing students with such a learning environment. In GLi’s programs, the integration of coursework, fieldwork and projects affords participants a unique perspective for engaging Italy. This engagement is driven by personal experience in markets, neighborhoods and rural areas, as well as reflection on important and timely academic issues.

For our fall program, these focus on issues of sustainability. This study program will assist students in understanding sustainable food supply chains in Italy through the study of its markets, products and processes.
