A Semester in Milan I’ll Never Forget

Studying abroad in Milan was the best decision I’ve ever made. From living in a city and traveling almost every weekend to trying new foods and meeting new people, I made memories that I’ll never forget. I miss it every day.
Coming from a small town in New Jersey, I was nervous about navigating public transportation and adjusting to such a different environment. However, the support of the WorldStrides staff, professors, and my peers made the transition so much easier. Everyone wanted me to succeed, which helped me feel comfortable, gain confidence, and make the most of my time abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Say yes to new experiences, but also give yourself time to rest! There is so much to do and see, and so many people to meet, but don’t wear yourself out trying to fit everything in.
Also, document everything! There’s no such thing as too many photos. I kept a journal and filled it with photos, receipts, wristbands, postcards, and other little keepsakes. It’s such a fun way to look back on the experience and remember the little moments.
Pros
  • rying new foods and learning about Italian culture.
  • Meeting new people and building friendships.
  • Easy and good priced travel opportunities.
What other participants should know
  • Exhaustion from balancing classes, travel, and social plans.
  • Language barriers in some everyday situations.
  • Extra costs for weekend trips, meals, and activities

Study Abroad in Milan

After four incredible months studying abroad in Milan, Italy at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, I'm leaving with so much more than academic credits. This experience challenged me to think beyond the classroom and gave me a global perspective on business, communication, and collaboration.

Taking courses alongside students from around the world allowed me to work with people from difterent cultures and backgrounds while experiencing international business in a way that simply can't be replicated in a traditional classroom. I am especially proud to have earned Dean's List during my semester abroad, recognizing that I could perform well academically while adapting to an entirely new country and educational system.

Living in a foreign country pushed me to become more adaptable, independent, and confident. Navigating language barriers and unfamiliar environments reinforced the importance of effective communication and the ability to embrace new challenges.
Beyond academics, I had the opportunity to travel to eight different countries, experiencing new cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. Exploring places outside the classroom showed me that some of the most valuable lessons come from immersing yourself in unfamiliar environments and learning from people with different backgrounds. These experiences broadened my perspective and reinforced how valuable travel is in developing curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

I'm incredibly grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity and for the experiences, friendships, and skills that I'll carry with me throughout my life. Thank you, Milano, for four unforgettable months!

Milan

Milan was an amazing experience. I cannot talk highly enough about my time there and the program through ISA. The opportunity to attend an amazing university in Milan allowed me to create lasting relationships with other international students and professors. I had the ability to further my abilities in the Italian language and experience the culture first hand that Italy has to offer. There was lots of support from ISA staff if needed as well as independence to navigate a new city and explore.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising thing I saw would have to have been the Duomo. While this is a big tourist attraction, I was amazed at the size of the church. Additionally, we had the opportunity to go on the roof and tour in the duomo through ISA and that was an amazing experience with some of the best views of Milan.
Pros
  • Becoming more fluent in Italian
  • Easy travel throughout rest of Italy and Europe
  • Kind and welcoming people
What other participants should know
  • Transportation Strikes

A Life Changing Journey

During my time in Milan, I had the incredible opportunity to meet so many amazing people. It was truly a life-changing experience that allowed me to grow closer to myself and gain so much confidence. Immersing myself in a new culture and learning a new language was both challenging and rewarding. While studying in Milan, I got to travel all throughout Europe. Exploring different countries and experiencing their unique cultures was absolutely mind-blowing. Throughout it all, I had such amazing support from the people I met and the community around me. Milan will forever hold a special place in my heart for the incredible memories and personal growth it brought into my life. It truly was a dream come true!

Pros
  • Language Acquisition: The opportunity to learn Italian and communicate with local Italian speakers. Being surrounded by native speakers and having daily interactions in the local language greatly enhanced my language proficiency.
  • Personal Growth: This experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and challenged me to adapt to new situations. it helped me develop valuable life skills and helped me gain a greater sense of self-confidence.
  • Cultural Immersion: Getting to first-hand experience the customs, traditions, and way of life in Italy helped broaden my perspective and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the culture.
What other participants should know
  • Homesickness: Being away from home for over three months led to feelings of homesickness for me. Missing my home, family, and friends was extremely hard but ultimately led to personal growth.
  • Language Barrier: Since I was not fluent in Italian before studying abroad, it made for a difficult adjustment when I first arrived. This was difficult but gave me the challenge to improve in my language skills to navigate my experience.
  • Cultural Adjustment: While adapting to the new culture, there was certainly some culture shock involved. It took some time to adjust to the different customs, social norms, and ways of life but helped broaden my horizons and gain a deeper appreciation.

IES Abroad Milan

For four months, I studied and lived in Milan, Italy. I arrived in January, and adapted to the Milanese way of life and embraced the culture entirely. I have entirely fell in love with Milan, grown significantly more comfortable in my Italian language skills, and met so many wonderful people. Most weeks, I traveled on the weekends to other European nations; during the week, I made sure to visit a new museum or place of cultural significance. I am constantly learning and am in awe of something new each day. As an Italian major, this experience has allowed me to finally be immersed in the subject that I have been studying for years. Although I have been fortunate to study Italian prior to my time as a student at Penn State University, I believe that being put in real-life situations has challenged me to develop my Italian skills significantly. At the doctor's office or the hair salon, I surprised myself finding the correct Italian words, when under pressure to describe an ailment or hair color shade. Being in an Italian-speaking environment has allowed me to utilize my textbook education towards real-world application.

Pros
  • So much culture
  • Nightlife is incredible
  • Beautiful and affordable
