Semester Full of Fun and Adventure

There's something new everywhere you go! Whether that be skydiving, hiking, or glow worms, the next place over offs a completely different experience and opportunity. As a solo traveler, it was very easy to navigate and explore. The program itself immediately starts immersing you into the culture and history of the area, which helps you create an appreciation for the country itself. The network and staff were incredibly helpful in the logistics but also in giving suggestions for your next adventure! The resident director were fantastic with navigating problems and finding solutions. Great experience and time!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Don't be afraid to go alone! The country is extremely nice and easy to navigate.

Unforgettable Adventure

At first, I was nervous going into the Study Abroad experience. I decided on it all rather quickly as well, after one visit to my Study Abroad office, I had my heart set on New Zealand and started applying almost immediately. Fast forward six months later, I am on a 13hr plane ride to New Zealand. I was traveling for the first time on my own and yet I didn’t feel alone. The TEAN program helped me every step of the way and they made my experience unforgettable. I can’t thank them enough. When I arrived there, they showed me kindness and support and I never truly felt alone. Then we had a marvelous time exploring the South Island of New Zealand and immersing ourselves into the Kiwi Culture.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Go into this experience all the way. It’s so easy sometimes for us to want to stay in our comfort zones and avoid the unknown but by applying, you’ve already taken a step out of your known world. So embrace it even more. Do things you’ve never even imagined doing, meet new people, and embrace the experience with full confidence. Remember that differences in this world is what makes it exciting and learn it all with an open heart and mind.
Pros
  • Learned a lot about a new culture.
  • Learned more about myself.
  • Gained experience in solo traveling, sustainable living, and much more.
What other participants should know
  • Traveling can make you burn out faster.
  • Can feel lonely at times.
  • Have to learn how to budget.

Otago University

In the Spring of 2024 I spent my time in Dunedin, New Zealand and attended Otago University. It was such a great experience and I am very blessed to have been given the opportunity. When I was out there I grew heavily in my faith and met up with the most wonderful church, Arise. There, I grew as part of a community with them and even more importantly, as an individual. It was so amazing to be able to see all nature in one day, from the mountains, to the hills, to the glaciers and beaches, the Lord of the Rings country and many more. Otago University was based on 80% international students and so, while in Uniflats, (the apartment/flat complex there), I dormed with those in Denmark, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as blessed to meet those from Italy, Norway, France, Germany, and more. There is no other experience like it and everyone's is different, so go and write your own tale.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I did this study abroad program all over again, I would hike more and learn how to camp. I hadn't been camping in over a decade and so I was worried that I couldn't, but I wish I reached out and met up with others to travel more. Overall, I can't complain about my experience but I will definitely be returning to New Zealand in the very near future to do my own traveling.
Pros
  • You get to learn about more cultures from all over the world.
  • Traveling within and near New Zealand is very easy.
  • It is the most beautiful place you could ever experience.
What other participants should know
  • You can experience all 4 seasons in one day (which some might view as a con).
  • New Zealand is filled with creations for those who wish to travel, someone who doesn't like nature may not appreciate its beauty.
  • Homesickness will come and you'll have your ups and downs, but you must rely on others to help you find a home again.

Best experience ever!!

I had a fantastic experience with this study abroad program. The orientation was well-organized and a great opportunity to meet fellow students. The group trips were enjoyable and allowed us to explore new places together. My mentor was exceptional—she was always available to provide medical support and made a genuine effort to check in on us regularly. Great study abroad experience in Dunedin!

I took 3 classes ("papers") which were great - I recommend Māori 108 ! The uniflats office paired me with great housemates that I got along with and I really liked my house/ location (I thought mine was one of the best) and loved having a kiwi host. TEAN organizes your living through uniflats so you don't have to worry about too many housing logistics before arrival. Dee (program staff in Dunedin) is very kind and helpful! Dunedin provides great access to south island adventures and beautiful scenery. I did lots of beach swimming, hiking, queenstown adventure fun, etc. The otago peninsula beaches are amazing! I felt safe in New Zealand and really enjoyed my time :)

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Sea Lions playing in the waves on the otago peninsula!!! it was so cool!
Pros
  • beautiful scenary

Unforgettable moment studying abroad

Thinking about my experience studying abroad, I would say that this has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I got to explore the beauty of New Zealand, learn new things and also meet new friends along the way. The landscape is breathtaking, my friends and I would keep referring to it as a green screen because that’s how pretty it is. I got to see many vulnerable species such as the little blue penguin, albatross, and Kea. Got to visit the largest national park in New Zealand and went on a weekend trip to Lake Tekapo and made multiple stops to explore new places and try new food with the program, and our program director, Dee, was so welcoming and nice. Everything was very well organized and I had the best time seeing cool landscapes and wildlife. Beaches and mountains are very clean and accessible, within an 1 hour drive range. I would definitely go back again, if there’s an opportunity.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Weekend trips were one of my favorite moments during my time studying abroad. Most memorable one was when I went to Lake Tekapo and camp at Wanaka. In Lake Tekapo, my friends and I went hiking, swimmed at a hot spring, and watched the skies filled with stars at night. The skies were like a galaxy and I am very surprised that I got to see 9 shooting stars in total that night. In Wanaka, while we were camping, I was able to see the beautiful and magical aurora appearing. Although it was freezing cold, it was so worth it, and will always be the moment I cherish.
Pros
  • Convenient location; university, restaurant, museum, and grocery store were walking distance.
  • The botanical garden and some museums are free. There is also a student discount for some centers.
  • Beautiful landscapes; beaches and mountain are everywhere
What other participants should know
  • Weather can be unpredictable, make sure to have your rain jacket ready
  • Sometimes the student party life can be loud

Sem1 2024

Dee was an amazing programme director. We went on so many great adventures and saw the most beautiful places. If you are a big nature enthusiast I definitely recommend going to Dunedin. Don't forget your umbrella or raincoat! The locals know the best places around and will offer up great advice on where to go. Some of my favorites around Dunedin was the Otago museum, especially the void room and butterfly exhibit. The botanical gardens has an aviary with all kinds of birds, and a herb garden where you can sample herbs.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Definitely what I would pack. I guessed what I would be doing and wearing. Definitely bring a good pair of walking shoes, rain jacket/ umbrella, and some warm clothes if you are there during the winter/fall
Pros
  • Great people
  • Amazing sights
  • Good school environment
What other participants should know
  • Expensive

University of Otago Study Abroad 2024 through an Environmental Science Majors eyes

The Uni of Otago was the perfect place in New Zealand to experience a study abroad semester, especially with my passion for the environment. There is so many activities you can do: beaches galore, the Royal Albatross Center, the OPERA, and Lanarch Castle are just some of the ones I recommend. Dee was an amazing resident director, always there to help and act as a mom figure! The classes were challenging but synced with NZ concepts and I learned so much and got to push myself. The people of New Zealand are the most friendly, always there to help you. The culture and hospitality made me feel right at home even at first moments of arrival in my host city. My kiwi host was lovely and a friend to be there to guide me through this experience. Overall, my experience abroad was the most amazing thing I could have experienced in my undergraduate career. I met so many diverse people, ate local foods, traveled the country, and learned so much from my classes and professors. I truly found a new home in another country, and I am so keen to go visit asap!!!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
My most surprising moment has to be on my road trip up to Wanka, New Zealand. I went camping with a few of my friends near my birthday weekend to celebrate. One night we were in the campsites kitchen room to make dinner and warming up by the heater because it was freezing outside. Two of my friends went back to the car to get the food things out of the trunk. All of the sudden my friend comes bursting through the door screaming at the top of his lungs "THE AURORAS!!! GET OUTSIDE!!!" We were all like WHAT?? in disbelief running outside and as I looked up the sky was glowing pink. We all jumped for joy together screaming and laughing because we could not believe what we were seeing. And as a bonus he even got the moment all on his tripod camera so we can rewatch it over and over. What a truly amazing night to see this stunning phenomena and all thanks to my friend who just grabbing some food.
Pros
  • Nature & environment
  • Excellent education & professors
  • New Zealand culture & hospitality
What other participants should know
  • Housing
  • Otago students party life
  • Public transport lacks throughout country
