About Program

Learn Russian in the EU offers two consecutive summer programs in Daugavpils, Latvia — the most Russian-speaking city in the EU. Students may enroll in the 5-week Summer Russian Language and Area Studies Program, the 6-week Summer Intensive Russian Language Program, or take both consecutively for an extended summer learning experience.

The programs combine intensive Russian language instruction with cultural and area studies. Students develop practical communication skills, expand vocabulary, and improve grammar, while deepening their understanding of regional culture, history, and society. In-class study is reinforced with full language and cultural immersion.

These programs draw on years of experience with universities, federal service academies, Project GO, and other partners from the U.S., UK, EU, and beyond. Students may earn transferable university credits (ECTS).

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Understanding that my Russian skills were good, but nowhere great enough! After continued and supported learning (as well as funny mistakes and interesting expressions) this changed very quickly.
Pros
  • Teacher dedication
  • Staff support
  • Warm host family
Cons
  • Latvia is far from Italy
  • Not a metropolis, a small city which can take someone by surprise
  • It can get rainy!

Amazing Language Learning Opportunity

I can't say enough good things about this program! I spent eight weeks studying Russian here with a group, and felt so well taken care of. They do an incredible job of making sure classes, transportation, housing, and everything else are organized for students so that all that you have to think about is Russian. The classroom instruction is very well-tailored, and my instructor, Larisa, went above and beyond to make our time in class engaging and give us practical skills. The host families are also a highlight of the program, and talking to my host parents helped me build a lot of confidence in my speaking skills. The conversation partners are also a great resource, and one is still a good friend of mine after the program, though not everyone got close with theirs. Daugavpils is a beautiful city to spend time in, with restaurants and cafes close to the school and a very accessible transportation system.

The program also organized cultural excursions, which was one of my favorite parts of the program. We visited different parts of the country and learned about Latvia's culture and history. Jans, our guide, was incredibly knowledgeable, and the trips felt like field trips with an added benefit of learning Russian. If you're looking for a program where you can really live the language, you won't go wrong here!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would go out of my way to talk more to the locals! Coming from the U.S., it took me some time to adjust to people being less chatty with strangers in general, but the people here are wonderful and got really excited when I told them I was there to study Russian (and sometimes confused as to why anyone would put themselves through this).
Pros
  • Very well-organized
  • Deeply immersive
Cons
  • Daugavpils is a smaller town, which might not be the best fit for everyone
