Go to Singapore!

Studying abroad in Singapore is the best decision I made during my college years. I got to explore my interests and travel to places I've always wanted to go to. The Hawker Centers and other food courts have so much variety and new cuisines to try. Singapore is extremely clean, and people there are kind and respectful in public spaces. They are willing to show up around and invite you to their culture. Being apart of a study abroad program was nice because I got to connect with others in the program. I got to attend the program events and learned more about Singapore. I really really enjoyed my time there and would love to go back.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Enjoy the time you have abroad! It goes by quick. Plan trips with friends, explore as much as possible, and be open-minded to new experiences. I would definitely recommend traveling to other countries when you get breaks. Singapore is an amazing destination, and it's convenient to take trips.

Would Not Have Changed a Thing

My experience in Singapore was absolutely amazing! Singapore is a beautiful, clean, safe country that was so much fun to explore. Everyone I met there was so nice and welcoming, and I never wanted to leave. Getting to study at SMU was especially great, because the location of the school is so central and conveniently located. Not only that, but the students have so much passion and excitement for their school, that even as an exchange student I felt welcomed and like a real, valuable member of the SMU community.

Plus, Singapore offers an amazing chance to explore surrounding countries in Southeast Asia! I got to visit so many countries that I never would have had a chance to visit otherwise in my life, and I am so grateful to have been able to experience so many unique and diverse cultures. I definitely recommend this program to anyone looking to get out of their comfort zone and try something new!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Always say yes to things! If friends have places they want to visit or explore, what is the harm in tagging along? If you have places you want to visit, encourage your friends to come too! Just by saying yes to every opportunity or chance that comes your way, you will open your eyes to so many new possibilities you may never have known about otherwise. And, you'll make sure you end your program with no regrets about things you could have done differently!

Most Transformative Experience Ever

Singapore captivated me completely! I wouldn't change a single aspect of my experience there. The convenience of traveling to neighboring Asian countries was one of the unexpected highlights, allowing me to explore the region with ease. I was constantly impressed by Singapore's exceptional cleanliness and security, which created an environment where I could fully enjoy my passion for cycling - even late at night without any safety concerns. These four months were truly the most transformative period of my life so far. The connections I formed and the experiences I shared have left an indelible mark on me. While I deeply miss the friends who became like family during my time abroad, I carry our memories close to my heart and remain confident that our paths will cross again someday. Singapore wasn't just a destination - it became a second home that I'll always cherish.

Awesome Experience

I think Singapore was perfect as a study-abroad location. I always felt safe and everyone speaks English, which makes conversations and meeting people easier. I also got the chance to travel a lot in Southeast Asia which was awesome. Our local advisor was great, he was always there if we needed something or had any questions. The housing location was great, only 5 minutes from the university! Everything was reachable via trains. I had great roommates, and the team events were fun, but there could have been more throughout the semester. 5/5

Summer in Singapore 2024

I had a wonderful time studying abroad in Singapore. It was my first time out of the country and I knew I would be doing it alone so I wanted to go somewhere for a short amount of time and was safe for travellers. Luckily Summer in Singapore 2024 was available and I would love to go back one day. It's a diverse country with many foreigners coming and going. There were many cultures to be immersed in beyond Singaporean culture. I met some amazing people and I am very grateful for this opportunity.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Navigating public transportation as an American who is used to driving herself everywhere was a bit of a challenge. Google was helpful during my time abroad and now I wish there was more public transportation where I live. It would make life easier and not so expensive.
Pros
  • Safe country
  • Clean streets

My Singaporean Experience

It was an amazing study abroad program. I had the opportunity to meet so many individuals as well as discover Asia. Although it is a small country, there are so many things to do such as go to Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa Island, Botanical gardens, etc... The hawker markets were also life changing. A lot of them have Michelin stars and are not expensive. If you are traveling on a budget, I would highly recommend to check them out. Pair your meal with a calamansi juice.
In terms of the program, we were assigned two advisers who were there every step of the way from getting out SIM cards to departing back to our home countries. It was great because it was like having parents abroad. We had weekly activities planned to further discover Singapore.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
There are so many various fruits and dishes that I have never encountered before. However, durian was the most unfamiliar. It has such a strong smell that it is illegal to bring it on the MRT.
