About Program

The aim of the 4 Week TEFL course in Granada, Nicaragua is to thoroughly prepare you for teaching EFL in any overseas environment. You will be able to prepare lessons for all age groups and levels and feel confident when selecting materials and activities.

Students will also get real hands on experience, designing and teaching their own English classes to the local community. We aim to provide a holistic learning experience beyond just teaching a methodology.

This course was one of the best decisions ever! I knew I wanted to get my TEFL certification before I went to teach abroad in Colombia, but I wasn't sure what course to take, there are so many options. INTESOL Nicaragua had a great deal going on so I looked more into the course, read great reviews, did some research on Nicaragua, and signed myself up! Couldn't have picked a better place to get a TEFL certification. It is an intense course, because you learn so much in such a short amount of time (1 month), but the teachers could not be more helpful! You get a lot of practice actually teaching (which is where you learn the most), and the teacher's provide you with such useful feedback. I learned so much about myself as a teacher! Not to mention, you are learning how to teach English in a beautiful country! If you don't mind the heat, you will fall in love with Nicaragua. It is a beautiful country, with so much to see and such friendly and humble people. Granada is an amazing city! The course is great because it is so small and intimate, it feels like family! You learn a lot, but you also have plenty of time to enjoy Nicaragua and the culture. Paul is awesome and sets up different weekend adventures such as going to the beach in San Juan del Sur, visiting the isletas (which is a must), or checking out Laguna de Apoyo! Paul does such a great job with this course, and will help you out with anything you need, whether it be school, living situations, you forgot your charger for your computer back home. He is super resourceful and super helpful! So are all of the teachers, Anna was fabulous, and willing to help with anything as well! I could go on and on of reasons why you should take this course, you won't regret it! You will get to practice your Spanish, practice teaching, and experience an amazing culture/see an amazing country. I loved it, and can't wait to go back to visit!

What would you improve about this program?

One thing I loved about this program was that in the beginning we had 3 Spanish lessons with an awesome Spanish teacher to see what it is like to learn a language. I think this program could be improved if they had a way to offer more Spanish lessons for those who are interested. Maybe, I could have taken more lessons if I would have just asked about it! But it was awesome and so much fun. Maria is the name of the teacher and she is so friendly and a great teacher. :)

I have recently returned from studying at INTESOL Nicaragua and cannot recommend it enough. The course was comprehensive with ample classroom experience with time to observe and evaluate other lessons. The tutors were really helpful and knowledgeable and went out of their way to help students pass the course.
The weekend trips and day excursions were a great break from studying and I loved exploring Nicaragua's coastline and jungles.
Once I finished the course I had advice and help in finding a short-term voluntary placement with a local school.
I already miss Granada and the INTESOL staff and hope to return one day!

What would you improve about this program?

I think the only improvement would be to have more time to explore this beautiful country whilst studying.

I found this TEFL course a real challenge – each day was full from about 8.30am to 5pm. We had homework and prep to do each evening as well. But, even though it was a tough few weeks, I really enjoyed it and was so pleased to pass the course and gain my TEFL qualification. I stayed in a great hostel near the centre of Granada – it was the perfect location for going out on the Calzada (the main street for bars and restaurants) on the weekends. My tutor, Paul, was always happy to help and give advice when I was completing the assignments and he gave really useful feedback after each teaching practice. He also gave me some really good tips and advice on finding a teaching job after I passed the course.

Nicaragua surprised and impressed me throughout my stay. Granada is a beautiful colonial city full of great bars, restaurants and authentic Nicaraguan culture. The other places I visited during my stay were also beautiful and worth the trip – the beaches around San Juan Del Sur were the highlight for me. I found it hard to leave at the end of the course and will definitely be returning. The course itself is really comprehensive and I feel excited and confident in starting my teaching career. As soon as I arrived in Granada I felt at ease thanks to the friendly and knowledgeable INTESOL staff. The course was quite demanding but really enjoyable too – we had a great group and tutor. The course had a good balance of group tuition sessions and teaching practice – I really enjoyed the challenge of teaching real students and getting experience in a classroom. Whenever I had queries my tutor was able to help – whether it was related to the course or related to finding a restaurant or bar in town! The organised trips outside of Granada were so much fun - definitely recommend the weekend excursions as I saw a lot of Nicaragua in 4 weeks.

What are the prerequisites to apply?

No prior teaching experience required! This is an initial teaching qualification specializing in TEFL. Non-native English speakers will be accepted onto the course on equal terms to native English language speakers provided that they demonstrate a high command of the language. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old.

What is your favorite travel memory?

My favorite travel memory has to be the first time I visited Nicaragua with my cousin and a friend in 2014. I found myself in the beautiful city of Granada - it was like stepping into a different world - a world full of unfamiliar sights, smells and noises. I loved the lively and friendly atmosphere, the music, the food. Nicaragua was awe inspiring. I spent a few days in San Juan Del Sur exploring the town and the surrounding beaches - sunsets on this coast are possibly the best I have seen in the world! I also spent a few days on the beautiful island of Ometepe - a place to reconnect with nature, hike a volcano and cool off under a waterfall. Finally, back to Granada where the markets, nightlife and architecture are some of the best I have experienced in Central America - a real must!

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Since joining INTESOL Nicaragua I have learnt a great deal about working as part of a team. I have learnt to work with local people and other expats to make a successful school which helps people begin their career as English teachers whilst experiencing life in Nicaragua. I have developed my tutoring skills as well as my interpersonal skills and communication skills (in both English and Spanish!). I have also become more adventurous since attending various activities and weekend excursions with students - I am now not afraid to zip-line through the jungle, surf the Pacific or scuba dive off the Caribbean coast!

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

My favourite story from one of our INTESOL Nicaragua students was a recent one - a student from Australia attended our course and passed with flying colours. Once qualified, instead of returning to Brisbane as she had planned, with the help of INTESOL Nicaragua staff, she found a job in Nicaragua working in a primary school with some of the poorest local children in Granada. She worked for 3 months as a TEFL teacher gaining invaluable teaching experience whilst getting to know the locals and truly becoming part of the community. She later told me that the TEFL course and subsequent qualification had changed her life and that it was an experience she would never ever forget. Great feedback for us here at INTESOL Nicaragua!

Which destination is most underrated? Conversely, which is most overrated?

The most underrated destination I would say are some of the villages surrounding Granada - "Los Pueblos Blancos". One of these villages, Catarina, provides fantastic views of the Laguna De Apoyo. The villages are renowned for their arts and crafts including handcrafted and hand-painted ceramics, homemade sweets and wooden furniture. These villages are also known for their "curanderos" or folk healers. A visit to these villages, just 30 minutes from Granada, is well worth a day trip whether you venture out alone on a 'chicken bus' to explore or take a guided tour of the region - you won't regret it!

Overrated in my opinion has to the town of San Juan Del Sur - its fun for a boozy night and is a great base for reaching the surrounding beaches such as Playa Hermosa and Playa Maderas, but the town itself is not pretty or an example of Latin American culture that I would recommend.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I felt particularly proud to be part of the INTESOL Nicaragua team when we welcomed our first students to Granada. It was a great experience to be part of these students' first steps towards becoming qualified TEFL teachers. Furthermore, I had the privilege of showing these students the best that Granada and the surrounding areas have to offer. Welcoming new fresh faces to Granada and to our school will never lose its excitement for me - its something I will always enjoy. To tutor someone to become a knowledgeable and confident TEFL teacher is a challenge but great fun and getting to know each student is really great too. We welcome students from all over the world and so it is always interesting to meet our new students when they arrive off the plane.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I think the people who are part of a company are the most important factor in making it successful. At INTESOL Nicaragua, all the staff work really closely together, we are a tight group who support each other every day to help make the school successful. From admin to tutors and drivers to directors, everyone is key to the success of the company, everyone is important and everyone is treated as equal. In this way, we are all invested to achieve the same goal and continue growing the school.

What unique qualities does your company possess?

INTESOL Nicaragua is a great and unique company - we are a small company and so we all know each other very well. We are unique in that we were all friends before we opened our school and so we all already shared a passion for Granada, a passion for Nicaragua and a passion for teaching. This well-established bond allowed us to work together honestly and creatively to build a school we are proud of.
